Speaker 1: Complex partial seizures are different than generalized seizures.
With generalized seizures the electricity in the whole brain all lights up at once. In complex partial seizures, it starts in one area of the brain and it can move to another area of the brain.
Speaker 2: The EEG is what helps us make this diagnosis. We can see the seizure start in one area and then sort of move its way to other areas of the brain.
Speaker 1: In partial seizures, the big thing to remember is they're focal. They start in one area and move, but there's two different kinds of partial seizures. There's simple or there's complex. With complex partial seizures there's some impairment of consciousness. The person is not alert and talking to you during the seizure.
Speaker 2: I find simple partial seizures very interesting. It can just be a feeling or a sensation in the arm. It can be just a weakness or just a little subtle jerking in the arm. Yet they can be talking to you while it's happening and know something is funny, but they are clear and conscious. So simple means consciousness not impaired. Complex means they have some impairment. They can look drunk, zoned out, or spacey.
Speaker 1: They can be completely out of it so these can be people that are walking around mumbling, with lip smacking, weird movements of their hands. It almost looks like they're trying to do something purposeful but you realize, after watching for awhile, that they're really not accomplishing anything. They may be trying to open a container and they just keep trying and trying to open it. You realize after a few minutes that there's something wrong.
Speaker 2: What did you see at Grand Central Station?
Speaker 1: At Grand Central there was this man sort of walking around confused for a long period of time with a whole bunch of police officers following him. They must have thought that he was drunk or high or something. It became very quickly obvious that he was fumbling and confused and he was having a prolonged complex partial seizure while he walked. You can still walk, you can still look as though you're having purposeful movements, but you're really out of it.
Speaker 2: It's important to realize that because you're having complex partial seizure, you might not be on the ground jerking and twitching, like we see with generalized tonic clonic. It can go into that but it doesn't always.
Speaker 1: They can be prolonged. They can go on for a few minutes at a time.
Complex partial seizures are ones that start in one area of the brain. They may or may not spread. There is impairment of consciousness. It can look like people who are confused or trying to do something purposeful that really is not purposeful. They are just as disabling as big generalized tonic clonic seizures.

Police Officers need to be trained to be able to recognize or at least help someone when they are having a seizure. I have had seizures in public and have been brutally handled by the police. I am a tiny woman. Only 5' and about 90 lbs. The police have no idea what seizures do to people and they treat people like they are criminals when they need medical help.

AZ Yogi82 That happened to me before. I had a seizure at school and I woke up in a small room with 2 police officers. They kept asking me what drugs I was on and I kept telling them it was a seizure and they didn’t believe me. I even had my medication with me to show them and they held me for like half an hour trying to interrogate me. After that I got a medical bracelet so if I have a seizure in public again they can see it and know that it’s a medical problem and I’m not a drug attic.

That sounds horrific :( On the whole, police here in the UK would never do that to someone who was having a seizure. Surely your cops are trained in first aid 😬

    • @MsYogaT

NalaMama I was wearing a medical bracelet when that would happen. Because I can’t speak immediately after a seizure, I would hold my wrist out to show them my bracelet. They’ve literally slapped my wrist down without looking at it.
I’m applying for a seizure alert dog. I hope that will help prevent injury and make it easier to be out in public.

Tom Powell I wish the police were like that every where. I recently moved to a smaller city and went to the police department to introduce myself. I told them about my seizures and wanted to make sure that they knew how to recognize a seizure and how to help. They were much nicer. They told me that they would be able to recognize a seizure and will help me if I have a seizure in public. Smaller cities might be the way to go.

you should talk about Autism next. Many people don't understand what it means. Nobody knows where it comes from. People should understand the behaviors and patterns of autism. More and more cases are being discovered all the time and these children need support, love and understanding. I post this not only because my 5 year old is Autistic but as a parent I understand the special love and attention these children require. We all need love and understanding.

Maybe all simple partials aren’t the same, IDK but my simple partial seizures are nothing like they described. I can see, hear, remember a certain amount but I can’t talk back to other people. I’m very tired and confused, and feel high as a kite! I don’t have a headache, usually but I feel hungover and could sleep for days. The neurologist recently upped my meds and since then I've been experiencing seizures that cause me to take my clothes off, or do random things while trying to have a conversation. Can a change in dosage cause abnormal seizures. • @evaaloezos2039
      @evaaloezos2039 6 років тому +4

it is different because for example most of the time when I have a seizure (I don't have absence seizures) all that happens is I feel a rush of fear in my stomach and a sense of deja vu. The last thing I always remember is looking around and not recognizing my surroundings (very scary feeling). Anyways I can talk during the seizure; however, I often do not make sense. Other times I ask who am I? where am I? I revert back and think it is my childhood. So basically answering your question in absence you are unresponsive, in many complex seizures you can interact, you just have no memory of it.

Eva Aloezos I have complex seizures too and they come in different degrees. Meaning sometimes I have a scary De Ja Vu feeling as well. I also have a deeper seizure, meaning I’m totally out of it and can’t respond to anyone. I’m not aware of my surrounding and look like a sleepwalker and might walk in front of a car. That almost happened before. Sometimes I’ll wake up and not know where I am and my memory will come back in a couple of minutes. But until it comes back it’s scary. I don’t know where I am and how I got there.

in absence seizures u actually do lose a form of consciousness, when the person has an absence seizure and “zones out” they are losing a part of consciousness in their brain, which is why when they return they don’t realize they had just zoned out (had an absence seizure) with simple seizures, you don’t LOSE consciousness. you are having a conversation and aware of the conversation, speaking, but you might have a sensation, or an aura and this is the seizure. very scary and easy to misdiagnose or see. with complex seizures u are not always conscious similar to absence, you might be able to stand but not do things properly as u normally do, for an example you might mumble words repeat words walk in circles etc. when the seizure is done u might feel more confusion than someone with simple seizures/temporal lobe epilepsy will have. hope this helps 💗💗💗
