Listening to the comment on age... Don't Worry, Be Happy! Moving thru my 70's and truly understand stuff I didn't - Like Age is a state of mind, not a number... Seen plenty of old 30 years old people... Hang in there Mi amigo!
Captain , this happens all day every day . The yacht Capt and tug Capt are Professionals. It’s like You went to NewYork at rush hour. Every day this happens
What a fun video! It certainly was rather busy, and it is interesting to see the different levels of attention by the boats. One minor note: 4:03 You mention right of way. Technically there is no right of way except for inland water ways, and then only if a vessel is heading down river. There are however stand on and give way vessels. In this case (Rule 18) the tugs are the stand on vessels since they are "limited in their ability to maneuver." The only higher priority would be a vessel not under command. Thanks for a fun video!
For all the guys obliterated in the last hundred years of wars and disputes this wonderful video of folk having a ball need an Oscar together with the video maker.
Cape Ann Towing was started by Capt. Ellis , he retired and sold the company to Capt. Cory. I had the privilege to crew with Capt Ellis on a rear tug .They really are amazing captains with ice water running through their veins . Total respect for their skills .
I say don't show the mega yacht. Show the AWESOME tow boat captains! Seriously. If that isn't the best boatmanship skills I don't know what else. And I love that the lead captain had his VHF radio just hanging from the top of the wheelhouse. Love it. They had it locked down no problem.
I'm 73 and still going strong, "It's not the mile marker you reach but the roads you travel" I wrote that on a long stretch of I80 transporting a 32' sail boat from Rode Inland to Washington St. Wish I had seen ur video then, my CB handle would have been "Tug Captain? LOL!
Kind of reminds me of my last underway bridge watch. Conning a Belknap class cruiser. 549 feet long, 54 feet wide, 29 feet deep, about 8300 tons. One shaft stopped and locked due to an engineering room casualty. Coming in to San Diego in the Pt Loma channel. Showing day shapes indicating "Restricted in ability to maneuver." Meaning, we had the right-of-way over everything that could maneuver, motorboat, sailboat, swimmers, etc. Carrying anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees rudder just to go straight in the channel depending on the winds and swells. Unfortunately it was a Thursday afternoon and we were coming in as the beer boat crowd was coming out. Coast Guard and Harbor Police trying to keep the little ones out of the channel and out of the way. Some very expensive lessons to skippers who thought that tacking meant they had the right of way.
I was there at the start of cape ann towing, spent many hours working on those boats with ellis and Courtney. They started out with gas engines then went to diesel and got more power and running gear as the boats they were towing got larger. The only thing that didn't get larger is the newriver. They always did a great job
I had worked on the New River and watch the tugboats do their stuff with the large Yachts going into yard and out to sea. At the turnaround of the part called Florida Peninsula and a new River is most amazing watching the tugs do their stuff. The captains on the Tugs do have some help with the computer systems however do have the ability to override and adjust. And also you get the crazy Critters out there that think they have the right away just because
They always have a tug/tow boat at the stern for larger vessels to prevent the stern from swinging too far wide. The lead boat pulls and starts the turn, the aft boat then pulls in the opposite direction. Hats off to the crews of those tugs/tows very making it look so simple.
Thanks again for ur coverage on SurfSide , it was real and from the heart, God Bless you! As those tragedies always go now it's just a media circus.....
I am enjoying the new stuff. I still like the Chit Show too, but this is good. I like all of your boating stuff. From the tugs, to Power boat reviews to boat shows... I love it all.
It is a unreal feeling being old. Best thing to do not wait to die. Go out and live and have fun. But still a terrible feeling knowing your time is near it's end is for sure.
Great video, I live on the new river and it never ceases to amaze me the size of the boats just getting bigger and bigger. The CarrieB is a flat bottom and when she is on the move, she is hard to stop. That flotilla probably corresponds to a bridge opening.
75 and going strong. Age is just a number. My wife keeps telling me to grow up. My answer is If I haven't grown up by 70 Why bother. Keep up the good videos. Love em Long Island NY
My dad was a tug boat captain after 25 years in the Navy, he drove a ferry here in Galveston then he got to be a tug captain his tug could pull 360 degrees and it had a chair that would swivel with controls.
My father and brother in law worked on the water doing similar work and the knowledge one has to have, like these tug boat captains, gives them a pride that allows them to do work such as this. Most people who own yachts like this wouldn’t know the bow from the stern or how to tie the line that holds it to the deck, so they need the captains who get these boats from point A to point B. I think it gives them a sense of pride that’s worth more than the biggest ship out there.
Alfred I hope you still keep recording at black point marina. You have made lots of friends there. I enjoy all your videos they make me laugh a lot. Lots of love
Just subscribed to you today and immediately you pumped me up with the age story. I’m 61 now and until you brought it up was not looking at how depressed I should be. Just glad I’m not in the 70 to 80 group looking at the obituaries everyday looking for a friend,😞😲. Just a thought, keep it positive in the age thing throughout life, after all, it’s only a Number!

You ain't seen nothing until you've seen a full size Great Lakes Freighter makings it's way up the Manistee River in MI under its own power. The river is all of maybe 300 yards or so across is all. And, there's a bend in the river at a draw bridge not too far inland from Lake Michigan. The freighters actually have to use a big bundle of pilings set up on the inside of the bend to pivot the ship around in order to make the turn. Amazing to watch.
