I personally hope adding 10 years of good lifespan is true. I truly hope immortality is not possible. I fear we will have a select few with access to it and they will have infinite time to accumulate wealth and power. Or we all have access and then it's the collapse of society. Try reading the novel Postmortal for a dystopian view of what that would look like.
Dr. Michael Levin (Tufts University) has figured out Regeneration. He is regrowing limbs on lab animals. In one case he actually regrew a planerians (worm) head, and it remembered how to navigate a maze it had learned prior to losing its head. He has also figured out how to reverse cancer in lab animals. He is working towards making death optional. Forget about prosthetics people are going to be able to have extra limbs if they want. He was able to grow a working eye on a tadpoles butt. When the tadpole transformed into a frog 🐸 the eye had moved to its normal location on the frogs face.
It involves bio electricity and ion channel modulating drugs that already exist. It's amazing.
I am completely for longevity health span. Also, when Sam A. mentions "Extra 10 years added", he is really talking about longevity escape velocity (LEV) . A concept by Aubrey de Grey . The thinking is that if you can extend 10 years of your life, you will get to live long enough to see the next breakthrough that will allow another 20 years extended to your lifespan. Then after 20 years, you will get another breakthrough to live an extra 100 years, etc. etc. As the saying goes...Live long and prosper !!!
How do you know the original life span you would have ? Saying "10 more years" means nothing.

@@georgesos Its not, Im guessing you just done understand what they mean. They arent saying "You will live 10 more years". They are saying "Your life expectancy will be increased by 10 years". Of course you could die of random events any time before then, but life expectancy of a population is something we use as a metric all the time in our society.

Hello! Been watching for some half year now and I really just want to say that I am thankful for the work that you are doing and as a researcher (tho in a different field) I can tell how much work you seem to put into getting information right and presented in a logical, often unbiast manner.
I really do hope to never see this channel veer towards a more "populistic" and catchy approach to these complicated topics. Ive seen too many channels do that and start making their content more appealing to people with less attentionspans and less requirements for thoroughness..

One way of looking at an immortal mind is seeing it as an eco system where ideas grow and die. A forest may be immortal but also it is always growing and changing and evolving.
Let's hope it doesn't get stuck in ideas in old age like it does with many people. People change their mind less frequently as they get older, just likes forests change less often as they get older.

Perhaps someone has already noted that your prompt for V6 said a narrow "steam" , not a narrow "stream". That explains the steam in the V6 image.

When it comes to longevity I think it is a strange view to think that we should not try to achieve it. Why is 85-ish year optional life? Why not 45-ish years as we had in the 1700's? Why is 150-ish year bad? I think that they will also take this medicine once it comes.

Since Microsoft is putting up $50 billion for expanding its AI data centers, I don’t think OpenAI is going to run into a compute shortage.
Midjourney has clearly shown that having a vast amount of compute or manpower will not necessarily result in the best model. That small team with limited resources is just mopping the floor with everyone in image generation.
@@randomuser5237 It's probably an issue with good leaders / talent.
Big companies can be rather slow and bureaucratic. And merit may be harder to come by in comparison.
Plus, they're less desperate and thus less motivated to somehow win.

@@randomuser5237 I thought the compute power in the form of training for Midjourney is provided by StabilityAI, I mean they use an open source model or at least build on top of that model.

You've been reading about lifespan extension and longevity research over the last decade? I'm 60. I was reading about that stuff in the very glossy and *silver* pages of OMNI magazine in the late 70s and into the early 80s. At the time people were bonkers about that increasing, extending, powering up every part of themselves, including their minds, which led to the even more bonkers Human Potential Movement. Weird times, man! ;)
Interesting. I’m 55 - and similarly it seemed to be “round the corner” in my 20s. However - with more research under the belt and with AI to help round the corner - this does seem way more plausible than it was … Kurt Weil appeared quite a crank when he spouted about living for ever 30 years ago - and his bio hacking seemed rather bonkers - but his prognosis on AI and it’s times scale seems to have been bang on the money even from 30 years out - so maybe he wasn’t quite so crazy and indeed was predicting surprisingly well … interesting times.

I’ve had fun following Michael Levin’s work in the world of diverse intelligence and bio electricity (among other things) and, to me, it appears to be converging somewhat with both AI and longevity research. Couple that with Sean Carrol’s solo episode on Immortality (more a philosophical take) and I feel like I’ve been bombarded with longevity updates this week alone. Thank you for the update - I have played with v6 as well and I achive interesting results when I use high --s parameter as --s 750 or even --s 1000. In case of longevity - we may add 10 years by exercising and proper diet.:)
For most people, if they know what's good for their bodies then yes. I have hundreds of food allergies and still haven't solved the best foods for me, I just know the worst foods that will mess me up the most and avoid those for sure lol
I've been paralyzed for about 7 years, so can't properly exercise, but I try to do physical therapy to what I can do. Anyhow, it's really hard with just those two things, but still important.
In your situation, advancements in AI could indeed be a transformative.

And i remember this article where they gave a graph of "H100 GPU orders expected to be fullfilled in 2023" and both Microsoft and Meta had ordered around ~150k H100s. If this is true I find it hard to imagine Google having too many more GPUs than Microsoft, espicially not Microsoft and Meta combined.

Amongst my married friends and coworkers, there seems to be a universal law that there can be only one Ai-obsessed techno-optimist per marriage. Maybe this is what stability (and, ultimately, alignment) looks like: a tethering of the anxiety-laden Safety agents to the Exploratory agents we release into the wild. Hopefully, how these two agents balance compute resources needs not be a zero-sum game ; )

Great summary as always kind sir. I would be ecstatic if we truly found a way to prolong life or defeat aging altogether. All hurdles aside I’d gladly even replace human parts as needed. I understand the “how long before you’re not human” side of the coin but I say to each their own. I do not wish death on anyone nor do I look forward to it either. Did you notice that the prompt for the Roman arch actually said steam instead of stream? The image wasn't missing the stream, there was no stream mentioned in the prompt. To be fair, the v5 image was also missing steam, but the v6 image added that dutifully.
