That mayor is the kind of mayor, governor and president this country needs. Someone with love and compassion. Someone who loves other people, and his town/country as much as he loves himself. Mexico Beach is lucky to have him!

What a dedicated Mayor, My prayers go out to you and your town. This is the time for people to come together and help each other. The other day I watched my County Sheriff preparing several cruisers to donate to your location. God bless you all and hope is here.

I grew up in Panama City. My dad was stationed at T.A.F.B. I’ve take many trips over to Mexico Beach & I love that place! It breaks my heart seeing the devastation there and in my home town. My parents and sister both lost their homes, so I can relate to the pain of losing everything.
Seeing the Mayor Al Cathey’s positive attitude and brotherly love he has for his community is uplifting & inspirational! Bravo Mr Cathey! Seems like Mexico Beach has the right guy to help get the good people of Mexico Beach back on track!

Not all but a lot of the homes damaged were second homes/vacation homes of people who live elsewhere (well off). I think this is why people haven't been very vocal about their needs because many of them have the means to move forward. The not so well off who lived in the area are being ignored because that is not the narrative the Governor wants now that he is in a tight race for the Senate.

Compassion is a human trait most have, you are lucky to have a mayor who is able to express it openly and genuinely. Please remember some people just toss paper towels at citizens who survived hurricanes, then go on to lie about how many died, and federal recovery efforts.
That said how is the Mayor, and his family. How goes cleanup and recovery now that the media is gone and focus has shifted?
Please WP do a follow up, always always do follow up stories on disasters and the people who survive them. The media is the biggest and often only tool the public has to make sure we take care of our own two, three, six months down the road.

So I basically went all the way in Google earth looking for our old vacation house. Looking up the location of the house, I went to Google earth and the small house we were in got destroyed. The vacation was fun, but I'm sure if we go back, we're staying somewhere else now.

I hope the media (and voters) continue to follow this story and the other major disasters - not just for the few days around the storm. I am a liberal (and proud of it), but when I watch stuff like this my heart still bleeds for the people of the South who get more than their fare share of these "natural disasters". We, as people-not political parties-have to come together and force the government that works for us to lead us onto a path where this isn't such a regular thing. Storms are bigger (if you'd argue that then you're in denial), they seem to be more frequent (all the disasters like wild-fires, massive rain storms, etc.) and of course they are more damaging both because we haven't left enough land as protective barriers and because of the increased ferocity of storms. My friends from the South think I was secretly smuggled out of the South (other than my politics) and part of me wants to come down their to help people rebuild...but I can't help but think we need to stop rebuilding anything close to sea-level. Sure it may get rebuilt and last for 50 years without issue- but I bet you the insurance companies who track this well will tell you, there more likely to be wiped away again in a few years. Anyone from the area or literally the hundreds of other communities that have or are facing similar situations, I hope things improve for you. I also can help but hope you will keep considering how you can encourage your elected representatives to do anything and everything to right this environmental nightmare. This isn't a movie. This is really happening... Bless you all.

I went through Michael in Panama City. I went through Ivan (150 mph) in Pensacola and the winds were far stronger in Michael (insurance agent said it was 170 mph in Panama City, 183 mph in Callaway, and 200+ mph at Tyndall and Mexico Beach). The NHC said Michael was 155 mph sustained. No way. It was more like 170 to 200+. The pressure was the most intense ever in Florida history in central pressure. Michael actually strengthened on land, which is unheard of. It was a Cat 2 in Georgia, for crying out loud. One person at Tyndall said they got 230 mph gusts on the flight line. I can only imagine what Mexico Beach was like. Bless those people in Mexico Beach and Tyndall and Callaway (add Parker, Millville, etc.). It is horrible in Panama City, but looks like a war zone in those three areas. The eye went over Tyndall and Mexico Beach so they got the front and back of the storm. Panama City only got the front side and it was devastated. Panama City Beach escaped most of it. It is 11-27-2018, 48 days after the storm, and there is still debris piled up everywhere in Panama City and Bay County. They said it would take a year to remove it and they have picked up like one million cubic feet so far. In my neighborhood, Michael uprooted Oak trees that were huge and broke Pine trees like they were twigs. We had six pine trees in our yard. None remain. Next door had 15 maybe and none left standing. One thing I've noticed is birds are gone. Rarely do you see a bird in Panama City. Squirrels used to be around, but not anymore.

Thank you, we'd be glad to have you down here to help our communities. I think though that you give man way too much credit. We cannot alter the weather.

First of all, you show your complete lack of education by saying "a act of" when it should be "aN act of", but I digress. You clearly know nothing about God and that's sad. Perhaps you could visit a local church and learn. While you're at it, go take some reading comprehension and English classes, that will definitely help you.
