Daněk evropský/skvrnitý - The fallow deer (Dama dama)
- Daněk evropský nebo také skvrnitý (Dama dama) z čeledi jelenovití (Cervidae) s lopatovitými parohy je evropský jelen, podobný svým zbarvením jelenu sikovi.
Samice se nazývá daněla, samec daněk a mládě danče.
Popis
Výška (kohoutková):
- samec: 85 - 110 cm
- samice: 75 - 90 cm
Délka (bez kelky - ocasu):
- samec: 130 - 175 cm
- samice: 115 - 140 cm
Délka ocasu: 18 - 27 cm
Hmotnost:
- samec: 40 - 95 kg
- samice: 25 - 50 kg
Letní červenohnědé zbarvení je bíle skvrnité. Skvrny jsou v podélných řadách. Břicho, vnitřní strany běhů a zrcátko, tj. bílá plocha v okolí řiti, jsou čistě bílé.
Po hřbetě až na špičku ocasu neboli kelky se táhne černý pruh, který lemuje i zrcátko. Kelka je poměrně dlouhá a slouží jako dorozumívací prostředek.
Černá kelka je totiž dobře znatelná na bílém zrcátku, v klidu zvěř kelkou neustále pohupuje a při úprku je vztyčená.
Zimní zbarvení je tmavohnědé. Skvrny jsou nezřetelné, nebo nejsou vůbec patrné.
Paroží je lopatkovité s očníkem a opěrákem, na lopatě tzv. dlani má pak zářezy tzv. krajkování. První prstovitý výběžek na spodu lopaty je pak tzv. palec.
Výskyt
Pochází z oblastí Středomoří a Malé Asie.
Už v době antiky byl chován pro okrasu i chutné maso na území Itálie a jižní Francie. Za vlády Karla Velikého byli daňci z Francie vysazeni v Porýní. Z Anglie jsou uváděni v 2. polovině 11. století, byli tam přivezeni zřejmě v souvislosti s nástupem Viléma Dobyvatele. V téže době byli vysazeni i v Dánsku a Švýcarsku, ve 13. století jsou doloženi na území Uher.
První zmínky o výskytu daňků v českých zemích jsou z roku 1465. V současnosti jejich populace v ČR čítá okolo 11 000 kusů.
V 18. a 19. století byli daňci vysazeni i do Severní a Jižní Ameriky, do Austrálie a na Nový Zéland.
Obývá listnaté a smíšené lesy.
V přírodě je plachý, ale v oborách vychází na pastvu i na otevřená prostranství.
Samice s mláďaty a mladší samci žijí v oddělených stádech, dospělí samci jsou někdy samotářští.
Život
Říje probíhá v říjnu. Samci při ní soupeří o výsadní postavení, obhajují teritorium a přetlačují se parohy. Daněk se v říji ozývá chrochtavými zvuky - rocháním, které vzniká vtahováním vzduchu do hrtanu.
Daněk se v říji páří s více danělami. Říje ovšem není tak bojovná jako u jelenů.
Březost trvá necelých 8 měsíců. Počátkem léta samice přivádí na svět jediné mládě. To se brzy dokáže postavit na nohy, ale až do stáří několika týdnů většinu času leží. Matka ho kojí 4 měsíce.
Daněk ve srovnání s ostatní sparkatou zvěří působí minimální škody, protože neloupe kůru stromů ani neokusuje jejich výhonky. Živí se převážně bylinami a trávou, na podzim sbírá také kaštany, žaludy a jiné plody. Pokud má možnost, rád navštěvuje pole, kde spásá obilniny, pohanku apod.
Pokud jsou daňci znepokojeni, mávají ocasem a ukazují jeho bílou spodní část. Při útěku se někdy odráží všemi čtyřmi končetinami a prudce odskakují.

The male fallow deer is known as a buck, the female is a doe, and the young a fawn.
Description
Length:
- buck: 140-190 cm (55-75 in)
- doe: 130-150 cm (51-59 in)
Shoulder height:
- buck: 85-95 cm (33-37 in)
- doe: 75-85 cm (30-33 in)
- fawn: around 30 cm (12 in)
Weight:
- buck: 60-150 kg (130-330 lb)
- doe: 30-50 kg (66-110 lb)
- fawn: around 4.5 kg (9.9 lb)
Common color: Chestnut coat with white mottles, it is most pronounced in summer with a much darker, unspotted coat in the winter. The light-coloured area around the tail is edged with black. The tail is light with a black stripe.
Only bucks have antlers, which are broad and shovel-shaped (palmate) from three years. In the first two years, the antler is a single spike.
Distribution
Native to Europe, but has been introduced to Antigua & Barbuda, Argentina, South Africa, Fernando Pó, São Tomé, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Réunion, Seychelles, Comoro Islands, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Cyprus, Israel, Cape Verde, Lebanon, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, the Falkland Islands, and Peru.
Their preferred habitat is mixed woodland and open grassland.
Life
They are grazing animals.
During the rut, bucks spread out and females move between them; at this time of year, fallow deer are relatively ungrouped compared to the rest of the year, when they try to stay together in groups of up to 150.
Maximum speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) over short distances. Fallow deer can also make jumps up to 1.75 m (5.8 ft) high and up to 5 m (17 ft) in length.
Their lifespan is around 12-16 years.
