aznSeddie, fun fact also. There was this school in my country (yes,I am a Filipino) who were able to held their own production of Miss Saigon. The school is San Lorenzo University. Its blocks away from my house
Well, aside from the fact that there are a lot of talented Filipina singers, the role requires an Asian who speaks really good English - no other place to easily find one than the Philippines.
The look in Lea Salonga’s face when Emily said “soundtrack”, is funny. Lea once said it’s her pet peeve when someone misuse the terms “soundtrack” and “cast recording”.
Lea Salonga held the benchmark so high that no one can bit that, her expression her eye contact with her and chemistry with her partner whether it was Simon Bowman, Chris Chase or even David Campbell she just nailed it perfectly! Plus she is so beautiful perfect for the Kim role!
Omg these three women are my spirit animals. As an Asian-American actress it is one of my dream roles to play Kim. I'm honestly in a lucky position, as a playwright moving to NY in September and as a Japanese-American woman, I have the ability to write roles for women just like myself.
One Queen and two young princess, no one can bit Lea Salonga's acting she has held the benchmark extremely high that no one can bit that, her expression, her acting and her chemistry are near perfect!
Emily was the understudy to Eva on Bway so I've seen her in the role and she is great. I am excited to see her again and now J. Daughtry in the role of John on the tour!
Besides their obvious talent, I see a trend towards an authentic Asian look from Lea Salonga to Eva Noblezada and to Emily Bautista. I also wonder how the Vietnamese' will see that their ethnicity is somehow seen by Americans as Filipino-like. And will the Filipinos now see that beauty is not looking more Caucasian (or more accurately, Spanish)? (Have you seen who had been winning the Miss Philippines and Miss Universe lately? Or have you seen all those skin lightening creams being advertised all over the Philippines, especially Manila?) I see all these changes as good and trending towards acceptance and tolerance towards Asian looks and culture. Please continue the progress!
Lea actually spoke about this, I think about a year or so ago on an interview. She of course, strongly believes the musical reflects the reality of the Vietman war and the present times to some extent, with the East-West romance etc. but she has also said that she hopes to see more strong Asian figures in western musicals because (she did not say this next part) frankly, the west really likes to play the "hero" part, often times overpowering the depth and significance of the other characters of color w/c is why they may unwittingly fall into certain stereotypes.
For me, I have a love/hate relationship w/this show beyond the stereotyping and more along the lines of how it reinscribes the Western rhetoric of militarism in Asia and its mistreatment of Asian women present in the show's source material that was Puccini's "Madama Butterfly", as well as both shows having white/European creators reinterpreting the Asian POV. However, I do think Lea and Eva have at least a surface-level understanding of the problematic aspects of both the story and creative production of the show and incorporated that into their performance, which makes MS hard to completely dislike.
I don't see it as stereotyping at all. There was bars and pimps in Saigon. There were bargirls and GI's having babies during the Vietnam War. Many, many of those women and children were lost and forgotten about. Treated like second class citizens. Were without a country. There were hard times for all after Saigon fell in 1975.
Even though Eva was born in California, she grew up mostly in Charlotte, NC, which is about 40 minutes away from where I live. Glad to see a fellow Carolina girl on Broadway and in London!
I love how we Filipinos are becoming a part of this wonderful masterpiece
Harley Laufeyson Lol, I shouldn't be surprised anymore when Kim has been played by Pinays for like 85% of the show's history, incl. the understudies.

Saw Emily as Kim at Pantages Theater inHollywood, She is amazing!!
A lot of people view Miss Saigon as problematic with its stereotypes & such & I want to hear what women who play Kim think of that

You should see Miss Saigon and see how strong Kim and Gigi are and how they found their own concept of “The American Dream”
