  • The June 2023 update is here for our Tesla 12.24 kW Solar Panel and 3 Powerwall system! We get into the 100s this month, get a preview of our Powerwall test, and talk a little about a virtual power plant event. And of course, the data.
    This month I'm using a new microphone.- let me know how you feel about the sound!

    Great work, learned a lot. I just got my Tesla Solar Roof with Powerwalls going, currently awaiting PTO from Eversource here in Connecticut. Great to see how you’re reporting your stats, which gives me some ideas for my planned blog posts.

      I'm glad you enjoyed! What size system did you have installed? Plan on participating in any VPP events with Eversource?

      @@TheMahkus 27.6 kW and 4 Powerwalls, in a climate very different than yours. I also ditched natural gas for two heat pumps last fall, a bold move around here since most folks have natural gas. We survived winter, but not without some HVAC glitches.
      To proceed with our install, we had to join Eversource ConnectedSolutions, fingers cross it goes well because I’ve heard of some challenges…

    I absolutely love your videos. Thank you for providing pertinent and detailed information. I wish I would’ve watched your videos before I purchased my system. I would’ve gone with a larger system. I have 2 power walls, 8kw south facing and a model y. Now that it’s summer I’m using the grid slightly and I wish I didn’t have to.
    Can you explain how it would impact people to add more panels with the new NEM 3.0 if you’re already grandfathered into NEM 2.0?

    • @TheMahkus
      @TheMahkus  9 місяців тому

      Aww thank you! I was looking for a similar kind of channel when I was looking at my system and couldn't find one...so I decided I would start one!
      It's my understanding that you can upsize your panels by 10% while still staying in NEM 2.0. That'd only be like 2-3 extra panels, so I'm not sure if that's worth the cost to you. I'd have to do more research but I think they'd essentially treat a new "addition" as a new system - the new system would be on 3.0. Not completely sure how that works as that's kind of a unique situation.

    Great videos btw! I just got a 10.8 kW system with 2 PW+'s installed this past week. Im curious what your peak kW production # is at mid-day/12noon with your 12.24 kW system? In SoCal and currently topping out at 8.2 kW (full sun, no clouds) which is ~76%. Half my array is SE facing and the other half on the NW side of the roof. I think you said yours are all East?
    Also, do you know if the 'Charge on Solar' feature is only available once you have PTO from the utility?

    • @TheMahkus
      @TheMahkus  9 місяців тому +1

      Congratulations on your new system! Today we hit 8.6 kW peak all east facing like you said. In May or June that's closer to 11 kW.
      You won't need Charge on Solar until you have PTO. You will already have access to charging "off grid", which will mimic that. Can't remember if it'll activate pre pto but I think you could kick the system "off grid" and then it would handle exporting excess to the car automatically.

    I have a question on selling back to the grid. Since the new 3.0 nmet thingy, how much money do they give to you ?

    • @TheMahkus
      @TheMahkus  9 місяців тому +1

      NEM 3.0 had made the answer to that question about as clear as mud. I believe now they use something called an "Avoided Cost Calculator" which looks at how a distributed energy source (ie your house) and a bunch of different factors to determine a rate. As far as I can tell, it says online to calculate about 60% less than NEM 2.0. We get about a nickel per kWh on 2.0. 3 cents per kWh maybe? That is a guess though. Sounds like you'd have to have very detailed information to precisely answer that one!

    I have a 8.2 KW (24 panels) system in Texas but no power wall, how many powerwall do you recommend ?

    • @TheMahkus
      @TheMahkus  9 місяців тому +1

      At least two. Depends on if you want whole house backup or what your goals are. I'd say at least two, maybe three. You should track and see what your heaviest overnight usage is (without car charging) and then divide that by 13.5 kWh to see how many you might need.

    • @TheMahkus
      @TheMahkus  9 місяців тому

      That would put you in the 4-5 Powerwall range. Could you do anything to reduce that number? With 8.2 in panels would you be able to fill 60 kWh of batterues in winter?

      Can't see the forest for the trees on this one Jim. System has a 6-7 year breakevem on it. These payments take a year off of that number. More like spend $42k (the real number after tax credit) to save $100k over the following 20 years after its paid off.

      @@TheMahkusagree 100% with this. My issue with it now is interest rates…I should have done this a year ago but now…10 years at 7% pretty quickly looks like 70k which doubles your roi time.
