You’re really projecting the whole “tortured artist” thing here. I saw them in ‘91 and again in late ‘93. In ‘93 he was lively and joking with the crowd. They were just as good if not better that night as they were in ‘91. The band has actually spoken about how much they were uncomfortable with these big festival Brazil shows. Drugs or no, any apathy you read definitely has more to do with Krist and Kurt’s distaste with the huge arena rock vibe.

However, there is actual video of Kurt and Krist talking about how much they hated playing these shows. They specifically mentioned how it messed with the dynamics of playing live. That’s straight from the horse’s mouth, and not from some junkie lackey trying glom on to Kurt to peddle her book.
