Michael Haydn at his best. Gentle gallant melodies like Boccherini; Rigorous structure like bro FJ; Open heart singing like younger Mozart's pieces (older Mozart will add melancholy to his smile combining both feelings at once); playful concertante like JC Bach; balancing past and future like Schobert and others). In one word pleasant but profound like himself, Michael Haydn. Chapeau!

In my opinion J. Michail is as great as his elder brother. So that the two greatest composers of the Viennese school were actually three : Franz Joseph, Johan Michail and Wolfang Amadeus.

The genius of Joseph has totally eclipsed the talent of Michael, who had worked some time in Salzburg, where he was in contact with the young Mozart. Michael had a beautiful talent, as we can see in this concerto for viola, hapsichord and strings, which is written with a delicate sense of the tones of the soloists and a careful equilibrium between the soloists and the orchestra.

Joseph may have eclipsed him overall, but definitely not totally, because when it came to sacred music it was Michael who was the undisputed genius of the Haydn family. One of his settings of the Requiem Mass inspired Mozart's, and is in no way inferior to that of his younger friend. tinyurl.com/rvu3u9k

I first discovered this recording when I was in high school in the 1970s. I loved it then, as I do now! I found the music and have enjoyed playing it ever since.

Hola!! Felicitaciones.
Hasta ahora no he podido adquirir dicha grabación.. Más de veinte años después!!. Soy un enamorado de esta obra. Sinceramente Muchas Gracias por compartirla. Estudio viola. Conduzco un programa de radio desde el '92. Saludos y un Abrazo desde Argentina (Pedro Bozniak-Guerrero)

Thank you. This would be MH41 (P55). There is also a recording by Stephen Shingles (viola) and Simon Preston (organ) with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields conducted by Neville Marriner.

I wonder why is not played nor recorded more often. Pinchas Zukerman should record it.
