Inappropriately Biked Grinduro (& The Future of Gravel Bikes)

- Jack & Reuben rocked up to the wet, filthy and surprisingly technical Scottish edition of Grinduro with slick tyres and an injured hand. Their facial hair was on-point at least, so here's how they got on...

Hey guys cool video. I would really like to see more of these races/challenges on your channel. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! We've got some more challenges coming up in the next few months so stay tuned.
Love it - like Top Gear without the racist slurs.
I don't get how this is a gravel race. It's a cross country race, period.
10 years ago people had their common sense and only took MTBs to these races. Nowdays there are so many types of bikes, everybody has something different. And it's all good, but I wouldn't say this race had anything to do with gravel.
It was 65km in total with the transfers. I'm sure there was miles of boring gravel they didn't show.
Totally agree, it's an interesting topic for sure. Personally i found the gravel bikes very interesting but if i wanna ride into the road i prefer my roadbike and for everything else my front suspended mountainbike. I think the fact why i'am attracted (seems not only me) by gravel is the rigid fork and the dropbars , but since i setup my mtb with a better gear ratio and a new fork i can really feel the difference. Now i can push hard where i like even in roads but i still have a decent bike that permit me to end a training session whitout a back pain (and let's be honest , using a gravel bike into a cross country terrain seems very painfull to me). Those new types are cool , but is not something that will last into the years into the market since as every mash-up is not good as the starting. For example a gravel bike will never be good as a roadbike into the road and neiter better than a mountainbike into the wild.... that's my opinion. Have a good riding time
Its the tangerine dreamboat!
Haha, glad the bike has some fans out there!
If anyone wants to go to that fireroad/technical bit its called Dyemill in lamlash
What a pit you didn't presented the bikes you used.
I don't get why. Why not use MTBs?
Because they like gravel bikes, personal choice!
Jogie Glen Mait
To show the versatility of gravel bikes. Someone should try a time trial or crit on one now
Long distance on MTB is pathetic, especially on mixed road surface and/or not technical terrain. Some call it "marathon". I don't get why. Why not RUN marathon? :)
Caffeine and carbs, done already. ~2013 did few triathlons on a CX bike (Scott CX Team + aero bars). You should have seen the faces...
Before I had a road bike I used to use my CX bike with road tires for a whole season racing crits.
Single speed = Cool
Fixed gear = Dangerous
How is it legal to make video content while driving? Having a call on the phone is forbidden by law, but we can make all sorts of video blogs? Seems dangerous to me. The driver is distracted for sure.
Jure Hribar I think some places have restrictions on that but I think bc it's hands free (similar to Bluetooth calling) that it's ok
I think that's a camera not a phone.
Jure Hribar boo hoo you fanny pack
Talking to a camera is no different than talking to the person next to you...
he is talking to the person next to him
12:56 😂😂 "You alright...?" "Yeah I'm good..." then "Woooooo!" as she falls off! Really enjoyed that video. I stay just across the water, I'll definitely be looking at the event for this year.
Reuben and Jack need more adventures! Send them to Dirty Kanza :)
Don't go to the west coast of Scotland and complain about the rain or the midges. It's one or the other. Go to the East coast and enjoy dry, midge free riding.
I love riding gravel, but I have zero interest riding in that kind of mud.
It's mega fun!!! ...Until you get home and realize literally everything you took on your trip is covered in mud too and needs cleaned.
Just imagine the fun you'll have cleaning the bike.
So a mountain bike is the best mountain bike?
Ground-breaking guys!
Gravel bike will always be a compromise, looking at the terrain you guys went, a MTB would definitely make more sense. Though I do wonder how would the 2018 Diverge with 650b fare in the event.
Woah that's harsh. The Isle of Man is stuck in the 50s!
fixed gear rim canti brake cyclocross bike
Do a race with one person on a softail and one on a gravel bike??
Ben Marshall is a softtail basically the same as full suspenion
Why not just use a MTB at this point?
because it's not about riding the most efficient bike but this exact one - the gravel bike :D For the sake of fun over logic
Thinking to buy gravel bike, never had one before. I ride a lot of gravel uphill roads around 5 to 15 km distance and around 6 to 12% gradient.
Realy love the look and simplicity of 1x draviterain. Planning to buy bike w SRAM Rival1 front 38 and 11-42T in the back.
I am solid recreational rider. Would driveterain like that be proper for my uphill riding?
Dudes, this video is rad ( old-skool-BMXer ) . Makes me wanna get out and do it.
Well done 'ol beans .👍
Glad you enjoyed it, and hopefully see you at Grinduro this year! And, here's our video from last year as well. ua-cam.com/video/aqU2naQgHmw/v-deo.html
i have such a hard time deciding between an 29 hardtail with super fast tires and a specialized diverge 2018. but for the event you guys were riding, i would come with my fully mtb with super grippy front tires
velo1337 There are worse decisions to have to make. I'd take the diverge, but I'm not you.
Yeah...that looks more like mountain bike terrain then a gravel race type terrain.
Somehow fixie guy was there at the finish before your expensive bike arrived there.
I've got this great new name, that combines loads of different disciplines; enduro, downhill, cx, road, gravel grinding, grovel and fat bikes- wanna know what its called? its called riding my bicycle. it really is an all- encompassing term that dispenses with all this needless specialisation of pointless names that still means your riding on two wheels and a frame.
Guys looks like you had a ball!!!!
Jesus! Just get a mountainbike.
Looking to buy first mountain bike what do you think of the spec on the boardman comp 650b 2016 on sale for 520£?
You guys came to the same conclusion I did. Glad I didn't comment too early haha
The bearded dude should have gotten into boxing. Man's got massive hands
Great report, nice video! Looks like you guys really had a nice time :)
Why using road bike instead of MTB?
People ride unicycles up and down mountains. Why? Because they can.
Only if you had the WTB Resolute 650b. :)
Mud takes all the fun out of it, unless you can just ride into a Lake in the end
Do you guys have your own dedicated UA-cam channel?
Why no gloves??
anyone know what that red jacket the single-speed dude has at 8:55 is?
"It's almost like gravel bikes already existed in the past... and mountain bikes were born and they were good at everything". So just buy a mountain bike? Why is it roadies will spend thousands on gravels bikes but turn up their nose at mountain bikes?
Because that course was more of a mountain bike race posing as a a gravel race. They even stated that what they race in the United States a drop bar bike is better. Roadies like the gravel bike because in the end it's still a road bike, that they still enjoy riding.
Awesome video guys! Glad to see more of these types of videos! I'm curious though, what was the very last bit of "just stop yeah? - yeah - you sure? - yeah" sounded like you guys got pulled over.
Ha, no that was Jack just not understanding how to use the audio recorder we were using.
where is James tenant and his mechanical playlist????
Flat Times at Ridgemont High
what bike did you use?
Jack was on a VeloOrange PassHunter and Reuben a Moots Routt RSL. Both are their long term test bikes.
cheers for the quick reply!
So, will there be reviews of these two?
Congrats on 3rd place guys.....I did not notice any fat bikes, why?
Ernest Noeline - because it wasn't filmed in Minnesota.
return of the 'tache? does your face fuzz grow depending on the style of riding you're undertaking?
That moustache was (it's sadly gone now) my most important gravel-specific accessory. My shredding vibes have been thrown off kilter since losing it.
should have used some mudgards :D
What are rim brakes? Garbage😂
Fixed gear, single rim brake setup.
Garbage
but... that's what I ride :(
It's fine if you ride that but in certain Environments it's not as good as other options.
It doensn´t matter what you ride, what matters is that you ride. I am a mountain biker who likes to do a bit of trails so I like my brakes to have modulation and be able to lock up the wheel without a problem. That´s why I run hydraulic disc and why rim brakes would be garbage for my riding style.
Great video..... Thumbs up
these two remind me of matt and ryan
lmao @ the "rags to riches"
What handle bar bag is that?
You should've done it on your Canyon, Reuben
I've got big plans for that bike! Jack and I are planning on riding another gravel event in Belgium in a couple of months so that'll give me time to convert the Canyon to single speed and see how MTBs and pure gravel bikes compare.
Reuben Bakker-Dyos I never thought you got the absolute black SS kit for the Canyon when I read 11 spd dude
Single speed carbon hard tail with a dropper post - it's going to be a fun bike!
1:20 Give me those socks.
Lol great show
love these videos
please do a fixed gear video!!
Don't encourage us - I really enjoy riding fixies, but I'm quite good at crashing on them too
Hey Brent Kyono, here's one we made at the start of the year, hope you like it!
ua-cam.com/video/Eb6pLWmdbxA/v-deo.html
lads!
What’s the digital camo bar bag on Rubens bike ?
Yanco Customs.
I'd like model details and info on the orange bike running those WTB 650B tires.
Hey John. It's a custom Velo Orange Pass Hunter disc that I've been using as a 'testbed' for a whole bunch of parts for the last few months. There's some more details on the bike here;
www.bikeradar.com/road/gear/article/the-wheel-mullet-50199/
That's very cool, thanks for the info.
Singlespeeds are the best!
Simon Rasmussen for knee pain
Someone doesn't know how to ride properly then, obviously. :)
Never like gravel bike
04:13, very bad move indeed! Not at all acceptable.
As we've said in a comment further up, it's just a stupid prank that Reuben and I have played on each-other a zillion times. No harm done and obviously nothing we'd ever do to a stranger.
