Jack Daniels would not say underrated, but rather under-looked. Chang was under the huge shadow of Pete and Andre, who not only were much better tennis players, but were far more marketable, specially Agassi. Then you also have Jim Courier, who between 91 and 96 was a force to be reckoned with, winning twice in RG and twice in Australia and reaching the finals of the other two Majors. He also accomplished more than Chang. As for Chang opening the door for them...I think that is partially true. Agassi was the first one to garner notoriety in 88 by reaching the semis in RG and the US Open, yielding to Wilander and Lendl respectively, the two best players in the world at the time and he went the distance with them.
660+ wins as to go with. Slam win and 3 other Slam RUP finishes. Several Masters titles. Reached 2 in the world. He was a really hard worker and a nice guy. He was like the Lleyton Hewitt of his generation, with a much nicer disposition.
That's a BEAT DOWN of the number 1 player in the world. Having said that, it's a well-known fact that clay was NEVER Sampras' best surface. Pete never won a French Open and the closest he ever got in that slam was a single semi-final appearance. Chang destroyed him and played on his best surface (besides hard courts).
Sampras would play 3 RG quarterfinals in a row,he was doing pretty well on clay till the 1997,won Rome and Kitzbuhel ,but considering his grass and hard courts achievements it was nothing, his game didn't suit the clay especially the European.
Chang was smallest height tennis player but the fastest. He worked harder than others due to underheight. Career record of 68% won is spectacular. Kudos to skype, very sharp viewing.
Michael had three more shots at a major in his career, including a USO final which also would've given him the number one ranking. It wasn't to be though. The guy was tennis' version of the flash and played with a ton of heart.
Michael Chang and Rafael Nadal are my two favorite players ever, they both fought and fight for every point lake it was the end of the world, so good to watch.
Great to see Michael again. Still remember the last time I met him (photography session) was in Singapore 🇸🇬 during the Heineken Open 20 years ago. Oh manz! That was 2 decades ago. Miss you, Michael! 💕

Chang is a true champion in tennis but also as a person who has the skill, the heart.
34 titles is nothing to sneeze about. Underrated career

Beating Sampras in the 1989 French Open would not have been considered a remarkable achievement back then. But the score! 6-1 6-1 6-1.

Sampras was a clown on clay... so it wasn't that impressive.
plus sampras did not become pete sampras until after us open 1990

well, he was 16 yrs. old ...
That's the asian spirit working in sports 😀
How l wish Michael Chang could win one or two more Grand Slams before he retired .
I love these 2 absolute animals. I just wrote a column on their careers they are unreal. my childhood days
I really enjoyed this interview. They prepared this well. The episode on Roddick's cramp really tells us what kind of man Michael is like!

Michael Chang is a great champ.

Chang is a legend!! One of good friends was a huge Chang fan...
Michael, my true hero!
Chang a legend ,We praying for Nishikori get back sooner🙏
Courier looks so young and healthy compared to the other 3 guys from his generation. 🙂
He's got hair, the other guys don't have much
For now. He has a child now so let us see. Unless he won't be a hands on dad.
I mean other than the hairline Chang looks like he could easily be in his 30s.

Chang and Wilander . The smartest players to ever play the sport. So much to learn from Michael!
Thank you Michael, for coming out and sharing
Courier vs Chang, head to head is even at 12-12. This needs to be settled, guys.
Picked Pickeball perhaps?!😀😃
he is amazing
I am a long time fan of Michael. An Asian-American idol for myself. 1989 was definitely a different time!

90s tennis was all about great American talent...Sampras, Courier, Chang, and Agassi...
Great comment
Michael. For ever
80's was the greatest
Chang opened the door for Sampras, Courier, and Agassi.
Unless the door was to a restaurant I think ur sadly mistaken.

As a professional we practice to be able to have a peak performance at the right time. Not all professionals peak during said season.
Shout out to the situation about Tiananmen Square Massacre. Didn’t know he would make reference to that. Respect to Chang.
