Well, I still don't know how to get the Cup Holder Lid out...
So many people complain about rust on these cars... I guess I got lucky. Not one spot of rust on my 2001 E320.

Remove the backseat and check where the battery is. YOU ARE BOUND to have atleast one little spec of rust over there.

I have no rust on my 1997 e320 either. It's a Houston Texas car.
Is it necessarily to take off the steering wheel to pull the cluster? In W124 it was possible with the steering wheel. I love disassembling interiors, I' ve could watch whole day such videos ;)

Have you got something similar with S class W140 or W124?
This video makes it abundantly clear just how much the interior plastics have degraded over the years on the 210. Everything is soft and flexible in this video. Everything now is baked, brittle and inflexible without breaking. This guy would be dropping a large number of F bombs if he tried to make this video today.
My 1999 w210 has no rust problem.
My 1997 e320 has no rust either. It's a Houston , Texas car.

The same happened to me. This indicates that the battery is getting low so replacing the old battery in the remote controller resolves this. Cheers
