TERMINAL COMANDS TO FORMAT SSD THE RIGHT WAY:
After logging on to your main computer, do the following.
Step 1: Eject the external disk.
Step 2: Launch Terminal and enter the following command:
    diskutil list
It’s very important that you pay special attention and note the Identifier of your
    computer.
As you’ll notice, in our case, these are the disk identifiers for our main internal disk computer.
Step 3: Connect your external disk to the computer and as was done before, issue the following command:
    diskutil list
Take note of your external disk identifier, in our case, our disk identifier is, disk2s2
Step 4: Issue the following command, using your noted disk identifier, to re- format the external disk.
    diskutil apfs deleteContainer YourExternalDiskIdentifier
Since our External Disk Identifier is disk2s2, we’ll add it to the end of the command, shown above:
    diskutil apfs deleteContainer disk2s2
After pressing return, the erase process for the external disk will begin.
Step 5: Launch Disk utility, and you’ll notice, you’re able to rename or format the external disk as usual.

This worked for me! I had 3 iMacs running on a external ssd at my office and we’re running Catalina on APFS format. I updated to Monterey originally and sent them all into a boot loop.... I had to recover all files and reformat to Mac OS extended journaled and it worked!

Do you have to keep the external hard drive or SD plugged in after install or are you able to disconnect it? Do I have to have any storage room on my macbook air or will everything be held on the external hard drive?

can the external SSD disk be connected before you start up your computer before install or should it be removed after you erase it to Journaled format and then reconnect it?

I tried to install, Monterey on an external ssd , from the M1 Mac mini, but it just boot back into the internal computer hard drive. I’ve tried it 3 different times, but same results.

Thx for this video. I installed Big Sur to an external disk (Samsung X5) with my Mac Mini 2018 128GB last week and it booted in about 15 seconds, a little bit faster than the internal SDD. Yesterday I upgraded to Monterey and a boot time as increased significantly to a very slow 45 seconds. It seems that Monterey is not fully utilizing the SSD's speed at startup. When the OS has started up it seems to work normal. I will try a clean install with Monterey later today.

You’re most welcome Gerard. Really appreciate you taking time explaining your external disk install experience.

@@macStudioA I did a clean install of Monterey on my Samsung X5 and startup time is about 45 seconds again. After startup the speed feels ok and write/read speeds according to Blackmagic is about 1,8Gb/s write and 2,2 Gb/s read. Then I installed Monterey on the internal disk of my Mac Mini 2018. Boot time is very fast on internal disk, 15 seconds. System feels also more snappy when started up. Write speed according to Blackmagic, 1,0 Gb/s write, 2,4Gb/s read. So there seems to be something changed in the way Monterey handles an external disk vs the internal disk. Maybe Apple is trying to discourage external SSDs with their new OS. For now I will move my photo library to the Samsung X5 and run the OS from the internal disk.
Edit: I enabled FileVault in the security settings for the Samsung X5, this seemed to improve things (startup time now about 25 seconds). When I installed Monterey on the internal disk, the installer asked if I wanted to use FileVault (default setting). When I installed Monterey on the external disk I did not ask me to enable FileVault, it is disabled by default. Don’t know why that is, but enabling took about 10 minutes to encrypt the disk and after that everything is running smoother. You would expect that encryption would make it slower, but apparently Apple has optimized this. The internal disk however is still quicker.
Edit 2: FileVault only improved the boot time up to login. The boot/load time after login it self however is still a bit longer than on the internal disk.

Hi @Gerard…Thank you so much for your articulate comments.
After reading you initial comment, before edited, I went straight away to do clean install on an external EVO 870 SSD. Well, I came in a distance second to your boot time, with a staggering 51 seconds.
Personally, I don’t think Apple has really done anything to discourage external disk install. MacOS still in its initial infancy…other versions, correction…updates will hopefully improve the boot situation. I recall when doing similar install, when Big Sur was officially released, a clean install on internal disk & also on an ext. ssd…was very slow…and the only macOS versions never really used.
Again, in my opinion, macOS Monterey is far more snappier than on Big Sur.
However, one option never tried, was the FileVault option…like you, was always sceptical that FileVault would slow down or be a lot slower with it enabled…WOW! your results with it enabled…speechless.
Will do same later…enabling it that is. Hopefully major future macOS Monterey updates does not change things… like make boot time slower, time will tell.
So forward and onwards to us crazy ones…who dare to install…setup & run macOS on an external SSD.

@@macStudioA Thx for detailed response. Makes sense. I decided to leave the new MacOs on the internal SSD 128GB, this should also make it immune for future upgrades. The read speed on the internal SSD are even higher than on external one. I moved the Photo Library which takes up the most space to the Samsung X5 (it is fully back-up in the iCloud). I don't want to wait for Apple to sort their stuff, it is becoming more complex with M1 devices already and the way they allocates SSD / memory use. My M1 iMac feels lighting fast compared to the Mac Mini 2018 :). But everything is relative.. Seems memory use has also improved under Monterey with my M1, as I am reading lower numbers.

@Gerard…Did the FileVault thing on ext. SSD…20 seconds improvement…still came in second with a time of 31 secs…now I just blame on my external drive enclosure ;) which I know to get a better one. BTW running installs from Mac mini Late 2014 model.

Just an addendum. With macs using the T2 chip, you will need to enable booting from an external disk by launching the startup security utilitity from the recovery console.
This can only be done if there is a working macos installation present as you will need to enter a macos password before the utility is allowed to run.
Once this is done the process is the same you highlighted.

Does this mean that I can carry all my macbook data inside a portable ssd and use it in different computers? For example can i use my friend's macbook or a public iMac to run as my personal computer at home? (Assuming I carry my external ssd when i travel)

    • @macStudioA
      @macStudioA  2 роки тому +1

Great question…In theory; that’s the way I have tested and used it before…then over past few years, Apple had made so many changes to it’s macOS in terms of security, that in order to have a seamless experience, public iMac might have firewalls that prevents it and for friends mac, you have to make sure that it’s compatible to run your chosen macOS.
Have done the above scenario locally, using same Lan (Ethernet) and wi-fi settings, and worked like a charm. Testing on different Macs, as would be expected…only worked if they were compatible. For example, trying to run (external SSD) installed with say Monterey on MacBook Pro that can only be upgraded to Catalina, was not possible.
Everything seems to work fine locally, but as this method outlined in this video is not officially supported by Apple, I tend to just use it for the purpose of testing beta macOS’s and cannot advise to do so in a real world working environment. And with Apple making iCloud more reliable and accessible than ever, storing you data and files in iCloud seems or has become a lot more easier than ever before.
However, nothing is stopping you from trying or testing your proposed scenario yourself and see how it works out for you.
I sincerely hope that helps and not confused you.
