Baby Markiki Having Tantrums due to Weaning

  • Markiki is now 7 months old and his Mama Margot has started weaning him from her milk. 7 months old is a respectful age; weaning of infants like human babies is individual to the mother and her circumstances; anywhere from 4.5 months to 18 months of age.
Markiki isn't happy about being weaned and has regular tantrums about it. Sometimes Mama Margot gives in for peace and quiet, but often she will walk away from him or shift her body uncomfortably. Markiki has big sisters Maio and Mushalina that often hug him for comfort when he doesn't get his own way. He is the youngest infant in the Longtit Troop, the wild troop that choose to call C.A.R.E. home; he is also the most spoiled since his mum and dad (Solomon) are both alphas.

Having nursed 4 children, just because there are teeth, doesn’t mean nursing is painful, btw. They try a bite once or twice after getting teeth through, get taught not to do that, and carry on painlessly. I think 4 months is way too young for these little guys to wean…but that’s just imo.

Weaning is a process she will keep doing what she did in this video more and more longer and longer until eventually no more nursing but the mother has to give in eventually or can be attacked from the noise of her baby crying out so she will give in eventually, this little guy you say is 7 months old is probably at the beginning stages of weaning, she will probably Introduce biting Into weaning her baby soon, alot of people think it's annoying but I always thought it was a cool thing to see the weaning going on because every mom and baby are different then the next but still similar in ways and viewers don't get to actually see alot of the actual real weaning process because either the camera guys are off recording some new baby or the mom has another baby before she weans the first one and the almost yearling just gets cut off, with all the feeding they mate more then usual so we don't see many go through the weaning steps

Thank you - we see it alot as we observe the wild troop which choose to call our property home and collect data on them (and their weaning too). Margot his mother weaned him very young, which she did with her daughters too and therefore became pregnant quickly. Sadly, Markiki is no longer here; we think he was predated on, so sad - can be reflective of his mothers early weaning style.

WILD BABY MARKIKI MISSING (PRESUMED DECEASED)
      -
      -
Its been a few days now, almost a week that none of us here at C.A.R.E. have seen young Markiki, baby born to alpha female Margot in December last year. Markiki was weaned very early (Margot's trademark mothering style), although still suckled now and then even recently. Whilst Margot too lost weight over winter, she would leave Markiki with his bigger siblings, Parky, Mushalina and Maio whilst she wandered off foraging alone or trying to reaffirm social bonds within the troop. Markiki was also often with daddy Solomon. Whilst a lot of younger males have been throwing their weight around, Solomon has also been looking a little worn-out recently; we are hoping that the summer now here means the life as a wild baboon will become easier. Markiki hasn't been seen in a while, nor has a body been found or been seen being carried (which is typical of mothers or siblings which lose an infant). It's possible he has been predated on (Solomon goes down to drink every evening with his cloud of kids and there are many big crocs in the river), this wild troop of baboons are living in a nature reserve (Big 5) and so lions, leopards, crocs, birds, snakes are many predators they must look out for. There is a misconception that baboons breed very fast; however, mothers can only become pregnant at over 4 years of age (some closer to 5,6 or even 7 years). Many baboons don't make it to sexual maturity (like little Markiki). Females are pregnant for around 6 months, and then it is usual for her to have her infant suckle for the next 6-18 months, meaning she is unable to become pregnant again (in normal cases) until she weans her infant. It is always sad to see one of our wild baboons die or go missing; especially when you see them born, them growing and the relationships they develop within the troop.

Mother primates feed their kids all the way until they’re about to give birth again, it having nothing to do with being able to find food on it’s on. Monkeys get so much more than a full stomach from nursing. Take orangutans for example, the females give birth every 6 to 7 years. So guess how long the mothers nurse for, 6 years. It’s not because the orangutan can find food on it’s on, it was able to find food 4 years ago. And just because a mother say no at a specific time doesn’t means she’s weaning her kid, she’s just saying No at this moment.

This racket and their raids on garbage cans and homes in rural South Africa is when neighborhoods quietly take direct action, shooting or poisoning any troops causing issues. More recently electric fencing has been deployed which is working very well and is not lethal. A few shocks and you learn fast. Monkeys are considered serious pests in parts of the country where agriculture is the primary occupation. These guys have few allies and nobody talks when a dozen turn up dead in the morning. Other monkeys are shot on sight with no bag limit or season. You can hire shooting squads the same way others call Terminix. They are a good hunting challenge because most are in the trees.

I'm disappointed that you didn't use this video to educate viewers just a little bit more about what that weaning process means to the baby. Towards the end you made one comment that he missed the comfort of his mother's teat. That is very true but he misses even more the comfort of her comfort you might say. He misses the sound of her heartbeat the warmth of her chest against his the feeling of safety and security with her arms around him and being able to clutch her chest while she runs off to save him from any impending threat. These babies have lived on their mother for months. They don't know anything else but this life. When she starts to wean them my suspicion is the loss of the milk is the least of all. But the loss of all of that is something that they have to experience as a rejection of mother. It's as though she is just turning her back on them and leaving them alone in the world. It seems that baboons are highly emotionally intelligent, quite opposite of what they are given credit for. The rejection bye Mom of everything you have known would have to be beyond heartbreaking.
Again I ask you to please consider being a little more factual to your viewers and supporters and fans, and especially the haters if they'll bother to read and hear, that this is not all about spoiled little brats who just want the milk bar which is what I read most often. Thank you for the brilliant work that you do.

Baboons are my favorite because of their beautiful eyes and that long velvet nose. All monkeys are family centered but baboons even more so I think. The babies are treasured like we treasure ours. I bet weaning is just aweful for them because a baby is distraught. Other monkeys love their babies but not nearly as I have witnessed in baboons. It's funny how did breeds interact also like in hydraious the males are over bearing and hold the females to strict dicipline while forgive me but I can't remember all the names anyway the group beside the hymadraous the male has to dole out love and pamper the females. I need to watch more on all of them but the families bonds are similar in all baboons. I just love them

Elegant my a$$….these things are vicious. And cost farmers BILLIONS in lost crops every year. I watched a video where a man couldn’t figure out why his goats were getting skinny. One actually died. He set up a camera and saw that when he would leave after he put out feed for his goats, a mob of baboons were coming in, attacking the goats and stealing their food. Lots of people seem to have empathy for these vile creatures, but none for the people that suffer because of them.

They are the mortal enemy of any farmer that lives near them. They literally take one bite out of every single piece of fruit, because it ruins the entire crop. That's how greedy these creatures are.

I’d pay to watch 100 of those little rats slowly peeled like an orange just to hear it scream. These are actually kinda cute. Destructive rodents none-the-less

She isn't weak by giving in. He is learning the lesson I see most ryhsis macqacs do also. He's being told that she isn't a passifier, she isn't a teething ring, and she's not going to feed him night and day. He still gets his milk but only a couple times per day so he better make use of that time to get full otherwise he has to forage like everyone else. It's still such a beautiful bond that many people missed out on with human mother's.

    • @leahalford5769
      @leahalford5769 Рік тому +1

Yeah the weaning process with animals like these aren't usually cold turkey. It can be up to a year! I don't think she's trying to wean him cold turkey. Just setting boundaries and letting him know he can't always get what he wants when he wants and he need to start helping himself or he won't make it!
