Now 2023 I hope new violinists beginners find this video , I am so excited to make my violin playing open up and be so much better with these chops , you deserve more views .👍 thanks for sharing .
Yeh I've heard from a few choppers that the thumb should be rigid and straight, complete opposite of conventional thumb position. But I think the rest of the bow hold is the same
It's an incredibow - looks like a baroque bow, but different. It uses nylon strings and rubber/plastic top, and can sustain like a normal bow though it's shaped like a baroque bow. No need to tighten or loosen, pretty cheap (around $100) but plays decently
what skill level would you say a person should be before trying to learn this, like I've only been playing 5 months should i wair or can you pick this up at any point?
i play guitar and there's literally the same technique with a different name, and i can tell you that this is difficult, no matter which skill level you are its gonna be hella hard to learn, even at pro level, so starting as a beginner will make it easier to learn as oppose to trying to incorporate it into difficult songs. GO FOR IT AND LEARN IT
+Victor Olmedo Heh--yes, that has to be the source of the sound and how amazing is it in so many of these chop vids on UA-cam that no one addresses this crucial point. It's the basis for the chop and it's ignored. OK, rant off. :)
When you do the chop, are you playing on one string or multiple strings, if so which-for example, what strings are being played here? 2. does it need to be played on open strings, or doesn't it matter?
OK, but why not show the chop from the other side of the fiddle so the hand is not hiding what's happening? Then we can see EXACTLY how and where the bow hits the strings: the angle of the bow itself, the path it takes to the strings, the impact, and then the crucial bit--the release of the tension that presumably causes the sound. Also, do it MUCH more slowly. Even if the chop sound doesn't happen, we need to see the motion slowed way down. I have not yet found a video of The Chop that actually shows these things. Frustrating.

Every player has their own take on this chop technique. I think it's still evolving out there.
Awesome Avery! This was the clearest instruction ive ever seen on the chop. I think i will finally be able to learn it!
Bc of this video I figured it out! Been struggling for months!! Never understood it fully until your series on Chopin! Thank you!
Thanks for your video :-) Please what is your bow model/brand ?
lovely thanks, good teaching, nice clear filming.
yeah! thank you Avery! great tip, I was looking for that. Very nice playing :)
thank you for sharing this!
This technique has been driving me bonkers for almost 5 months now, but I’m not giving up

Love from India. I want to incorporate chopping into Indian classical music. I shall give it a try, of course after practising a lot.
Wonderful!
Very cool! Thank you!
Nice incredibow!
savage my man, well done
Great vid, thanks
Thank you so much for this video!
OMG IM FINALLY ABLE TO DO IT THANK YOU!!
Thank you!!
Do you hold the bow "normally" or do you change anything with the thumb?
Yeh I've heard from a few choppers that the thumb should be rigid and straight, complete opposite of conventional thumb position. But I think the rest of the bow hold is the same
Would a bow balanced toward the frog be better for this?
I loveeeeeeee
How do you know what finger placements to alternate between when you're chopping?
Aaaaaay we literally like the same thing btw we got the same violin pickup
how long it did take for you to practice the chop?
I've never seen a bow that looks like yours. What is it? I want one!
Isn't it this a baroque bow?
Its called a incredibow.

Genio! Grazie!
Good one! What about a double chop
Aaaaaay we literally like the same thing btw we got the dame violin pickup
Avery a friend of mine Niall Murphy (check him out on UA-cam) uses a 5 string fiddle which is better for chopping 4 or 5 string

Do u somewhat slide the bow once you land it on the strings ?
+Victor Olmedo This is definitely a question for Avery! Please reach out to him here: www.damntallbuildings.com/#welcome

Will that chopping damage my strings?

i don't think you need to play on open string, of course its easier to practice with in my opinion
Rip the rosin lmao

+Dave S. Thank you so much for the feedback! We'll work on getting another video of the chop out asap.
