I really like Elizabeth Moss. She has that kind of mousy, on screen presence, and it takes way more talent to pull that off than ppl think. I also think she’s one of the best actresses working today.
I’ve read Wells’ book. I think these adaptations of older works would do well to not try and modernize the setting or the plot. I like stories set in 1800s England. If Moss wasn’t in this I probably wouldn’t care for it as much

The scene where James was proud of Cecilia for simply reaching the mailbox honestly made me tear up a little bit. Because it was such a simple yet effective and moving scene

I think the film Cube from 1997 was influential on torture porn and the more sinister movies like My Little Eye (2002) Klobus (1999) Those films took it to another sadistic level. And then Saw (2004) and the several sequels took it to a crazy sadistic graphic level, than became over the top, then overdone and ultimately pointless. I have not seen The Invisible Man but want to. Based upon Upgrade, Leigh Whannell still has a unique point of view. Cube, btw still holds up today. It's a pretty interesting low budget sci-fi horror movie.

    • @cruddddddddddddddd

Cube is awesome. I think it’s on Prime. I rewatched it recently and really enjoyed it. I hate torture porn. Cube was a clever little sci-fi film.
The director also did Splice with Adrian Brody, a different take on Frankenstein-what if Frankenstein was a woman? How would that change the story, since women typically have a motherly instinct, and wouldn’t abandon the monster after its ‘birth’. Vincent Natali is the director’s name I think

That’s right. I forgot about that. I actually watched a few episodes of Hannibal last week on Prime. There were rumors Natali was connected to a Neuromancer adaptation. I think he’s a pretty good director. I would’ve liked to have seen that-it’s one of my favorite books.

Good review. They always are. IMHO, a dog would have been helpful in this movie. Not to mention a bag of flour. Can't say I noticed the music one way or another. The ending is too "Gone Girl." It doesn't make you doubt the story or her experience, it makes you doubt HER.
And yes, the increasing surveillance state is worrisome. Led by corporations, not just the government. Not to mention suits like that are being developed. Though they're thought of more as a cloking thing, than invisibility. More like in "Predator." And don't get me started on SWARM technology being used with insect spy drones. And I appreciate your advice about staying focused on the movie, and turning off the news. With TV it's easy, online is another matter!

There were 2 places this movie could have ended, the first was "Surprise", quote then jump to credits. It didn't. The second was the exposition after the "Surprise" quote. It didn't. The third was the milking after her cop friend and her had that conversation. She then walks away and she is coming towards the camera then stops. All through that, I was literally yelling, OK END THIS MOVIE, OK END IT, END ALREADY. I am sure that was done for a reason like how Richard Donner did the decapitation head scene in The Omen. Usually a scene like that is done and you know what's going to happen so you cover your eyes for a certain amount of time then you can look again. Donner filmed that decapitation scene longer then that expected time using various angles and repeats that when you thought it was safe to open your eyes, you still were watching that head getting cut off.

Maybe try some meditation (I recommend Sam Harris meditations online for that) and a workout routine of some sort. Drink plenty of water, don't stay glued to the news, and you'll regain some peace of mind. Remember to breathe. Sometimes I get caught up too. I had to take a break. But try and appreciate film as a way to help us during hard times. It isn't meant to be an escape for me, but more a way to see things more clearly.

@@deepfocuslens I have processing speed disorder dyslexia and it impacts ms when watching films. 😭 I often have to rewind to listen to certain bits again or pause and think about what I've just seen impacts the story. I used to call this overthinking but I think it's just my brain's way of understanding/clarifying to myself.
I definitely think my concentration has improved when watching films but I get so easily thrown off. It might be part of my disability, but any tips on how to read between the lines better? I have to exert so much energy just to understand things on a surface level. I occasionally totally misunderstand a film (like not even get the mechanics on a first view) and then really beat myself up and feel stupid. I have began self forgiveness more though now knowing that it is a disability- which I didn't know it was before 2019 at 22 y/o.

This movie is like a 5'4" bald guy who has a vaping addiction being relentlessly pursued by Megan Fox who tries with every effort possible to manipulate him back into her arms, where he then escapes and hooks up with Rihanna and saves her by ranting about his Star Wars knowledge. I love how a woman can just watch this and be like "Yeah, that's just like me."
No guy with that much money would be chasing after a 2/10 woman.

Not sure how you could think the ending didn’t feel earned and lost traction. Just the fact that you get this long ending that flows together from her cutting herself to the brother being shot is reason enough for her to wanna end his life. On top of the abuse(mental/physical/sexual) and terrorizing that’s implied throughout the film.

It's funny. My wife and I had the exact opposite feeling. We were all in on the first 45 mins or so, then were pretty much just waiting for it to end and left with a bad taste in our mouths. She did a great job and I liked the concept but it's a BARELY recommend for me, which is disappointing for how much I was liking the first part.

      SPOILER
The ending - that dude HAS to take her word for it. He has to just trust her judgement of Griffin's character. And we kinda do, too. We know he was overbearing, but we never SEE him being all of the things she says, we have to trust her, but it's easy to do that, without any doubts. She earns our trust.
So that's a really neat idea, but it doesn't nail it 100%, you know? It's aiming for a HIGH ART kinda concept and it's a pretty close. Luckily it's entertaining as fuck along the way.

The whole abuse/crazy ex combined with being invisible and supposed horror didn't do it for me. You could've done a whole movie about the psycho ex without ever using the invisible character.
Not to mention the ending is beyond dumb. Easy password to the lab, the supposed smart inventor never checks the closet when she escapes when the dog comes in, and never goes to his lab go see if she tried cresting a suit or taking something.

I was immediately turned off to this movie once I saw the trailer, which like many modern trailers, seem to shove the entire movie down your throat, giving away what I assume are suspenseful turns, just revealing far too much. I know much of a mainstream audience can't follow a plot without forced exposition and need to see basically everything in a trailer, but then I assume it's probably not gonna contain anything unique and just another formulaic watered down piece of garbage if that's the crowd it's being marketed towards. I dont like seeming this cynical but more often then not it's unfortunately proven true! BUT, I could be wrong. I've seen a couple reviews that make me think twice on this one, so may give it a chance at some point.
