  • In this video I cover three mini-topics, including a demonstration of thermionic emission using an automotive light bulb, a power supply I built using a selenium rectifier, and an attempt to re-charge an old alkaline battery.
    Thanks for watching!

I do like the compilation of segments. I'd love to know from what or where you obtained 1960s-era components.

6:59 why does the lamp quickly flash when it starts cunducting?

This is due to the filament temperature being directly affected by the diode current. As more current passes, the filament gets hotter, which causes reduced voltage drop and thus more current. Eventually the capacitor charges to a higher voltage and the current reduces, which causes the filament to cool back down. This oscillation is responsible for the sharp changes in voltage that are visible on the scope when the capacitor is connected to the load.
