The only reason they want you to download their poxy app is for all your data which they then sell and they can monitor your every move (with your FULL consent in the terms of use)
Every time I go to the imdb site I'm encouraged to go onto their app for numerous unspecified "advantages" and discouraged from continuing on the Web page.
      You have to ask why?
The Web page is there, it works, despite their ongoing attempts to self sabotage it with LIMITLESS BLOODY ADS--- And an app obviously costs extra financing to produce and maintain--- so, why?
Very valuable info, yours, to be precise. That's why.
If we don't stop this shit now we are fucked

@@tonycollazorappo The thing is, in most situations you don't actually need an app; a standard web-site does the job perfectly well. However, companies like you to download their apps because they then get more control over you.

I still chuckle when I tell people I’m not on Facebook or twitter(x), never have been, never will and they look at me like I have an illness. They ask me, but how do you stay in touch with people? I speak to them, I ring them, I send them a card, I visit them. If they’re interstate, I’ll email them or ring them. I certainly don’t feel a need to tell them about every meal I’ve had and how awesome it was, or how I’m feeling, or if I’m feeling sad. Technology has its benefits but is not a replacement for basic human interaction and connection.

I found out how you can be abused on Facebook about 15 years ago and dumped that site like a radioactive pile of SH!T. Will never go back and now that Twitter is owned and operated by someone only slightly less authoritarian than Mussolini I will not only not have an account there I will not click on your witty find at that site no matter what the new owner calls it, or how clever you think your fwd retweet is. And why is it assumed you or I have to keep in touch with those people? I figured out about the same time I dumped Facebook that some of the responsibility for staying in touch is on those people and not all on me. So now we are not in touch, and even my best friend growing up all those years, turned out I was doing all the lifting in that friendship, they could not be bothered to pick up a phone. Maybe that makes me look bad, but I don't care, I am better off with a F'ing cat.

Joan: I live in SE Asia. Last summer I had to go to the US. While there I had to buy a phone because my "international" Samsung won't work on any US carriers service.
So I bought one with a 90 day prepaid "contract". I was told that I could cancel it by calling the carrier. I left after 90 days and was prepaid for the entire following month. I was too busy putting connecting flights together the day I left to call.
Anyway, by looking at the AT&T site I have to use my handheld device to contact AT&T to cancel and it won't work from SE Asia.
They continue to bill me each month with a charge for the next month even though the 90 days expired 5 months ago and the phone hasn't been used since the day in August when I left the country and is no longer connected to their system.
That's another reason I opted to pay by cash every month instead of saving $10 by paying with a credit card. They'd still be charging my credit card for each "delinquent" month plus late charges. What is it about 90 days they don't understand?
I experienced the same problem with AOL when I moved to Thailand in 2022. My sister in the US kept calling them to cancel my subscription and they said "OK" but they never did and it took my card being compromised and canceled to stop them.
Pro tip: Don't give your CC number to any of these corporate thieves unless absolutely necessary!

And there was no computer in their rooms either. I'm not on Facebook, twitter, or what-have-you.. It's amazing how even companies and workplaces assume everyone does everything on their phones so I had to get my manager to understand that, if she was to reach me, to call me on my landline (yes, I still have one of those). I'm with you on this, but the number of boomer-age and older people who feel the need to pick up the phone if it rings astonishes me. One woman I worked with would pick up the phone in the middle of a meeting. It was a compulsion "In case it's important". She defended her habit by saying that it could be a call about something happening to one of her children. I let every number I don't recognize on my cell phone roll to voice mail. We still have a landline in the house and I'm absolutely comfortable letting every call go to the answering machine. If I hear a familiar voice, I can always pick up.

I wish to represent an older beef with tech - the universal use of electronic controls on all sorts of appliances (e.g. washing machines) when the old mechanical controls were just as effective and more durable. But when it comes to deliveries from the local pizza joint etc. then definitely not. It's far better to buy a few top quality pizzas from the supermarket and bung them in the freezer. Then when you want one, 15 minutes in the oven and it's ready. Having a takeaway delivered costs at least twice as much, takes up to an hour to arrive and when it does arrive it's lukewarm and soggy. No thank you.

We don't moan because we see someone in need: we do what we can to help. Being positive comes from within, and positive actions don't need a "list". When we complain it's because younger generations don't feel the need to do any of the above. Remember this: Boomers invented cell phones, computers, wifi, gps, fiber optics, e-books, CT scans and MRI machines, modern passenger jets, Amazon, Windows, Apple, Harry Potter, McDonald's, the Beatles, and the SuperBowl. I grew up with freedom to play unsupervised, access to firearms, violent shows/video games and parents who taught me the most important lessons of my life - accountability, kindness, empathy, and respect for the world around me. Doing what we wanted was common because neighbors/families trusted our upbringing and judgement because of our values were learned early. I remember my best friend and me picking up a couple 22's and shooting at targets or going out to play in the woods all day and coming home for supper. There was never a thought of harming anyone or anything. there was never any thought or worry of something happening because dad taught us responsibility, safety, and respect. I think at 13 we had more wisdom and sense than half the content creators today. I also never needed anything to record any of those experiences. Those lessons and memories are burned in my brain forever. Thank you to all my friends and family who taught this boy to be a man while never getting to old and losing sight of the wonder and magic of the world around me.

    • @IgorRockt
      @IgorRockt 7 місяців тому +4

This is not completely true. In Germany, you have the so-called "Panoramafreiheit" ("freedom of panorama"), which states that it's OK to photograph or film in public, as long - and THIS is the important part - people who appear in those photos/films *are not singled out* or even *the main focus of the photo/film* (the important term here is "Beiwerk", I think this is called "Accessory" called in English. It means that the person is an unimportant part of the photo/film. If somebody moves their camera to follow you - even if you are just a very small part of the film as such, they already need your permission to do so).
So if you are walking down a road and somebody is taking a photo of that road, they are totally legal to do so - as long as you aren't the main focus/content of the picture, or singled out in any way. If you are the focus or a big part of the photo/film, then your "Recht am eigenen Bild" ("Right to one's own image") comes into play, and they need your permission to use the photo.
It's actually a quite complex legal issue, not something "black and white". And additionally, the law differs between photos/films for personal use only and for commercial/public use as well (the rules for commercial/public use are much more in favour of your right to your own image).

3:50 ~ Woo ~ wait ~ slow down a moment there. Let's be less concerned about the Bluetooth in your digital thermometer ~ Let's talk about the idea you need a small tube of glass with a few drops of mercury in it as a thermometer.
Look~ I'm a 61 year old Linux nerd, a technology geek, who started programming in 1982, but you don't need to microprocessor to make an egg timer. You don't need a microprocessor to make a thermometer. You don't need a microprocessor to know what 7 x 8 equals. You don't need a microprocessor to wake up in the morning. You don't need a microprocessor to switch on or off a light, or open a garage door. I am as happy and enthusiastic about computers and IT as the next person, possibly more-so, but ... Come on!
    ---
In 1948, George Orwell wrote 1984, which was a dystopian fantasy about what the world would look like in 40 years or so, if things continued the way he feared they might. He told us about a thing called a 'view screen' ~ which was a combination of television, and propaganda, and surveillance tool. He told us they would be installed by the government (Big Brother) in every house or flat, that they would run 24 / 7, and that you couldn't remove them. He didn't tell us that we'd pay for them ourselves, line up at 3am on a cold night to be the first to get a new model, that a smaller model would fit in our pockets, and that we'd go off the deep end if the battery went flat.
I wonder what George would make of Donald?
    ----
Fire is good thing, to cook your steak. Fire is not a good thing to destroy your house. Fire is in itself, not a good thing or a bad thing. It is a thing with enormous potential, for good or bad. It can change a lot of things, very dramatically, very quickly, which means it's powerful. One could say the same about electricity, or industrialisation, or compulsory gov controlled education. One could say the same thing about computers and IT. One could say the same thing, generally, about human beings, or civilisation.

Look at the problems with electric cars. First they need to use manual door locks and windows. When the battery is dead, you need to be able to get out .
Unlock the door and open it. Roll down the window. All without using electricity. And for safety.
Remember before every car had ac, we had those marvelous floor vents and side vents. The side vents directed the air past the inside windshield and an open floor vent cooled the feet first and the whole cabin. And they closed well for cold cold winter days and nights.
Here are a couple ideas for starters for reducing the amount of electricity that the machine uses.

The first one is sort of true. A lot of people only see the “good” parts of other peoples lives on social media, and people obviously won’t always post the bad. It can definitely lead to jealousy most times, but it can also lead to eating disorders and other issues (which is society’s fault as a whole; beauty standards and whatnot).
But are we not gonna talk about the countless people who grew up WITHOUT tech or social media in their childhood and still developed mental illnesses?
I grew up without a phone or a tablet being shoved in my face, and I always played outside so much to the point I was always stepping on something that would cut my feet nearly everyday.
Still ended up developing mental illnesses from my parents always fighting and neglecting me over my other siblings, and some of the illnesses I even inherited since they always ran so bad in my family.
Obviously not a lot of older generations perceive it this way, since their generations were forced to discriminate against those who were mentally ill, and were even told to hide those things just to appear normal.
While social media may have caused a lot of people to develop certain things, it’s definitely not what created these illnesses that have been around for centuries.

There are minds, strong minds and then there are potent minds. My mother wanted a daughter, so she tried to turn me into her "little girl", even though I was not born with a "hole in one", but rather with "a string attached". Try as she might, it didn't work: I knew I was a boy and nothing could change that. I started learning to read at age three and had read many authors, from H.G. Wells, through Alexandre Dumas, Jules Verne, and many others by the time I started school at age six. I HATED school because it was not teaching me anything useful. This was in the middle of last century, before kids had any "rights", so I was thrashed both at home and at school because I refused to do homework. I eventually dropped out after scraping through Std. 8 (Grade 10), left home and became a hobo at age 16, travelling around the country and working here and there, at different jobs, to pay for my needs. I was a pretty boy, resulting in me being raped on three occasions. They were, quite literally, no more than a temporary pain in the butt to me: I moved on, completely unaffected in any way.
Yes, I had a tough-ish upbringing, but nothing could dampen my spirit. I never let the bad bits get me down, but always looked forward to each new adventure, even during those times when I had to run all night to keep from freezing and when I went without food for up to two weeks on end.

We never knew the local priest had a _fondness_ for the altar boys. We didn’t know our rights at work. Options were what rich people had not regular people. We didn’t know the magnitude of perverts and rapists we idolized. Women raped and murdered when their cars broke down. People found dead in their homes after months and even years, because no-one noticed. People look at the past with rose tinted glasses. When I was a teen we didn’t even have defibrillators in every ambulance, now they’re standard at work and the local shops.

We have lived in a negative society for longer than social media has been here. People seem to only notice when something goes bad. It is amazing to see the surprise on peoples face when you compliment them on a job well done (makes my day bringing a smile to someones face).

Yes, this true. Kids backtalk their parents and the parents don’t want to be the bad guy so they let the kids get away with it. So the kids think that they can talk to anyone like that. Yep, that’s what this world is coming to, no accountability. And if you correct someone’s else kid even though it’s wrong, the parents will turn on you, sue you and all kinds of stupid stuff just because they’re lousy parents.

If I had spoken back to my Dad, the way these kids do, I'd have got a hiding to nowhere and been locked in my room til *I could behave like a normal person*. This often left me thinking Im gonna be up here a long time then. The trick is learn the difference between disciple and abuse. Some people took it too far and they had to remove ALL discipline as a result and that was also a mistake.

"I can't do ................. because of my anxiety." Feeling anxious is normal: maybe you have to give your first speech at a conference; perhaps you're hosting a big party in someone's honour and wonder how it will come off; or you're traveling alone to a foreign country for the first time. There are hundreds of things that would make the average person anxious. But it seems every third person on the interweb has crippling, baseless, widespread "anxiety" dominating their lives. To me, much of it seems like self-indulgent hope that someone else will do whatever chore you're avoiding.

imagine if they had a srvice where you could pay for one monthly subscription, and have all your entertainment streamed on a weekly schedule, and if there was stuff at an inconvenient time, you could record it on a machine to watch it later, all for one subscription price. there could even be an option in cities where they could send it out by radio, and people could just have an antenna connected to their screen, and stream it for free.
