I was legit mad at your inadequate use of a wrench at first. It honestly made me cringe. Then when you duct taped sand paper the shoes I was like oh god okay I'm not crazy
Thank you for this channel. I have learned so much while I was fixing up my brothers bike. Unfortunately he was killed last week when his handlebars came off. Witnesses say that just before he rounded the curve the front wheel came off first but he instantly pulled a wheelie and managed to get around the bend. At that point he was on the wrong side of the road and facing oncoming traffic. He prepared to switch lanes and turned on his new custom made indicators. The witnesses say there was a flash of light and then a dense cloud of smoke as his wiring burnt out and petrol leaking from the custom fuel cock caught fire (I had warned him to spray the wires on the new indicators with WD40 before use, I guess he did not listen. No idea why the fuel cock I had taken from an old boat failed. He must of messed with it). It seems, from eye witness accounts, that his brakes may have failed also. I think this might have been because he used wet and dry for a brake liner instead of coarse grit sandpaper like I told him. We will never know as the bike was consumed in the fireball. As were half of the stores in main street. Standing on the custom saddle I had made him from cardboard and an old pair of jeans and surrounded by flame, with his legs blazing and his custom helmet -- made of a cut in half plastic soccer ball overlaid with tin -- alight and dripping molten plastic down his neck (I had always told him to wear protective clothing on the bike and not just the T-Shirt and boxers shorts he was wearing that day. Would he listen? Would he f---!) he attempted an unwise manoeuvre. Screaming in pain, he yanked on the handlebars in an attempt to change direction and get back in lane but they came off (He must of failed to grease the securing nuts with margarine like your tutorial said) in his hands and he fell backwards into the path of an oncoming cement truck and got squished. Well, at least the squishing put the flames out, so that was good. We buried him in an envelope. He was 13. The 750cc bike, was 18. Unfortunately, the bike carried on and finally went through the window of a store and exploded. Five old ladies and a gay boxer named, 'Quite Angry Marvin,' out on a day trip to buy batteries for their sex toys, were killed in the inferno. Still, not to worry. I look forwards to some more great videos. I am working on my sisters Fireblade at the moment and installing a cruise control made out of a washing up liquid bottle and some super glue. Its going well so far. Wish me luck.
I bought new brake shoes like these shown but I didn't get the strip of liner like you show at minute 2:26 nor can I find these strips anywhere. Can you tell me where to buy them please? Because my new brakes won't stop my bike at all.
Oh thank you very much! You are my hero and save me a lot of money during restoration my bmw cafe racer. I would like to fix the brakes, but ive got weird thin disc on wheel, not drum like you. Can i glue the sandpaper directly on the disc?
I've stopped doing this refurbishment on them breakliners.. it's been a while since I first found out that the steel itself was much more stabil,.. and have not worn out any breaks since! - cheers, and thanks for another great one, mr. ichiban!..☆
Unfortunately we can't do that here in UK, our vehicles must pass an annual roadworthiness test. The examiners are adverse to gravel/soil fitted in brake drums, just as they dislike toilet roll stuck under the fork dust covers to absorb oil leaking from fork seals. They also do not believe in "Loud bikes save lives"...
I new they were ripping me off at the bike parts shop selling me a pair of shoes, my tires are worn and they say I have to replace them. Do you have any tips on carving deeper tread to prolong tire life and save money,is there a special tool a heated chisel or drill bit.
10 out of 10 for pointing out the health and safety aspect of old bike linings, as they may contain asbestos if they have not been changed from new. also beware of old manifold gaskets, as they were made of asbestos
thanks man, watching some of your videos was excellent therapy after having to sit through a bunch of incompetent how to videos that had me ready to yell at the screen
I couldn't afford the brake re-lining kit so I have to make do with friction rated banana crate fibre. Which side of the fibre will work best on a Yamaha front brake?
I always wondered what that gray tape sitting in my tool box was for; many thanks for the great video because I'm going to do a brake job on my ex business partners bike this weekend.
It took me a minute to realize that this entire video is an elegant practical joke. The whole point of the video is to troll the trolls, to entertain by provoking indignation. It really is a sardonic look at the whole UA-cam genre! When you watch it with that in mind, he obviously spent a lot of time thinking up the wrong names, using the wrong tools, reusing cotter pins, wrong mask, and then capping it off with sandpaper and duct tape. There is just enough salient advice to realize that this comes from a much higher level, which makes it even more hilarious. I wonder how many requests he gets for the special kit. Because of outrageous humor, I really want to give this one a thumbs up. The problem is, the joke could go right over the heads of dumbass teenage bikers. Every day I'm amazed at how stupid some viewers can be, but in the end ignorance is really not their fault. The Three Stooges was not funny without Moe, so this is participation cinema at its best. But If even one person were to have his duct tape and sandpaper seize while riding, it could be a comically sad, but ultimately indefensible day.
spelunkerd you actually were serious there, right? Anyone stupid enough to try n glue sandpaper to old brake shoes shouldnt be allowed to operate anything other than a spork.
It’s not funny unless you’re really really bored. I actually clicked on it and wasted five minutes of my time. Elegant? Naw. It’s just a waste of time.
ichiban, thank you for another informative video. My only concern is that if more and more people learn from these motorcycle repair master class instructional videos, your restoration business will suffer as we will be able to repair and restore our own machines.
One of your best videos yet! Some of the technical jargon confused me a bit though. I agree with back road moto, just filling the drum with (fine) gravel via the filler hole, is quicker and just as effective.
Ichiban Moto I would advise a degree of caution when selecting a fine grade gravel. Here in the UK we use a decimal grading system, as do most Japanese manufactures. I'm not sure imperial gravel commonly available in th U.S would be compatable.
Ichiban Moto If you can afford (or get hold of) OEM parts, it's probably a wise decision. I once filled my tyres with cheap Korean air to save a few pence and the handling was really not up to standard.
+johnnycactus0 yes, however it's very complicated. I will provide a future tutorial or you can always drop them in the post and I'll get those sorted for you mr. cactus !
Those Honda brake lining kit upgrades should always be used with assembly lube or at least marine grade wheel bearing grease, or else the stopping power will be too great and could be dangerous. Your videos have inspired me to modify my bike, so I have just fitted an ash tray to my Honda CB90.
You forgot to apply a liberal coating of copper grease to the Honda brake pads to stop them squealing. What do you means by good brake cleaner? Would WD40 do?
You guys are lucky, in Canada we have to use the more expensive red zip ties to pass safety. Those extra 30 cents times all the parts that need those ties really start to add up...
Those lining refurb kits look PROPER grippy! Careful when you haul those bad boys on, you'll be eating handlebar sandwich in no time! Another fine tutorial. Do they make those kits for disk based braking systems? Mine are wearing a little thin and I like the ease of use. Thanks Ichiban Moto!
+Andy Man Cam most excellent cautionary advice , most are not experienced with using racing quality linings. They do make disc kits as well, however special amber friction grade assembly glue is required, so please follow the instructions on the box closely.
nuts, awesome cool bike, BUT its a carter pin, and use adjustable or wrenches. i LOVE my old visegrips. I got a 86 Magna drum brake lever that is completely seized now Im trying to get it loose with drum brakes on back.

Brakes will get hot going downhill, I surmise. Also it is hot near the blacktop. The glue backed sand paper would change in temperature in the outdoor and usage elements and the glue would be in proximity to the contact surfaces. Looks more like sand paper to me, are you serious dude
Exactly my thoughts
Don't forget the duck tape
Previous to this, I was watching videos featuring "Booji Boy" (of DEVO fame); I thought this may have been one of THOSE videos...
hahaha true..
I am so happy he is using assembly tape to keep those custom brake linings in place.

I would just keep your worn out grinder discs and swap them straight out
Just bend the disk slightly, this will compensate for the pads having gotten thinner, as the warped disc then can fill out the gaps properly !
Just bang the shit outta the tire w a hammer. Something will change.
I used to use Elmer's glue to fasten my brake pads but your method is ten times faster. two thumbs up!
+Thinking Impaired thanks for watching !
These self-adhesive pads are awesome! They make these to fit worn out disc brake pads too! They are life savers! Thanks for the input Ich!

Another Top Tip from Ichiban Moto, Keep them coming .
This cracked me up at least i now know how to open the brakes to replace them with real shoes lol 😂 thank you
"split nail thing"??? It's a cotter pin.
And using Vise Grips on perfectly good nuts...SERIOUSLY???
Mark McMasters you forgot they were metric vise grips
He's doing stuff like that to be humorous for the video, he literally glued sandpaper to the pads if that isn't indication enough

Dude! I am seriously always learning something new from this guy! Keep up the great work! :)
+David Nelson hey, thanks for watching and sharing !
Does the brake drum stay actually effect the braking at all?
when pressure is applied , it keeps the entire mechanism from rotating with the drum and wheel
@@IchibanMoto will it effect the braking at all? As I installed mine back on and it stops the wheel from rotating a bit
