How to repair a hole in a fiberglass RV

- If you knock a hole in a fiberglass laminate camper, it not as bad as you'd think to repair it yourself. Repair shops will tell you to contact your insurance company then charge you a fortune to fix it. My son and I did the repair for under $100. You can save yourself literally thousands of dollars. See West Marine's UA-cam videos for detailed instructions. They also have excellent phone support.
Just put a small hole in my daughters new RV with a tractor. About a 2in hole. After watching this video, I have no doubt I can do it myself. Thanks for the great vid.
🤦♂️
Thank you very much ! You can’t imagine how many fellow campers you’re helping
Thank you this was very helpful video. I have a HOLE in my brand new 38ft Keystone Bullet pull trailer. It's just passed the warranty too . It just makes me sick to see it every time I walk by it. I'm going to fix it my self thanks to this video. Thank you again for posting this!
Great job. Pleasant listening to your easy-going voice and quick moving instruction.
Appreciate the kind words!
Hi Marion,
Thank you for making this excellent video!
One question please…
Can you please explain a little more about how you made that “backing“ or “back plate“?
Thank you kindly :-)
Awesome job! Thanks, first repair I actually watched the entire video. I damaged my RV backing up to my house gutter that actually sticks out from my house 3 feet…….sheesh. Can’t wait to get it repaired.
Lol I did the exact same thing to mine, first day I got it
Our first camper is a Rockwood, we are really enjoying it. Ram does a great job pulling it.
Very, very helpful, thanks so much for your careful and clear information! Thanks from Montana!
looks great. after putting some glass mat in the repair, we used to finish a patch job in the boat industry by mixing cabosil with gelcoat. helped make an easier to sand, yet colour fast patch on the gelcoat.
Thanks, I was afraid of gelcote as I didn't know how to use it. We did mix some white Silvia to thicken It . up. Learned a lot on this one. Hopefully it will whole together.
Been watching your Ram vids which are great.
We are getting ready to move from Colorado to SE U.S. somewhere.
I have a Jacuzzi bath tub with a hole in it. The hole looks a lot like it got stabbed with a knife - please don’t ask questions about it.
Anyhow, we’ve been using it for years with a small piece of clear packing tape over it - no leaks.
Your video reminded me of this repair. I guess I will start the research and decide if it is something I can do or it I want to pay lots of money to have someone come and do it.
Thank you for another enjoyable video.
Ha, I hope it wasn't too bad
That backing plate with the screw in it was what I was looking for thank you
Yea, I made mine out of a Teflon lid, Put a piece of mess in it and pour some epoxy over it. make it thin enough to bend it and get it in the hole.
Thanks got a small hole looks like an arrow went through the casing down the bottom by the bedroom its a cottage from USA semi patched it up but will try and see how i can follow what you have done. Yours is a nice job got a feeling who did this
Another great video. I have not had to do any fiberglass repair on mine, (luckily), but unfortunately I had some water intrusion in the roof and now have a soft spot that I need to take care of. Always something with an RV. If it wasn’t so much fun to get out in it it would not be worth all the work 😊👍. Keep the videos coming
Thanks very much.
Impressive. Well I guess it's time to give it a shot. I have a small damaged area on the back of my 5th wheel where I bumped into a picnic table a few years back. My Wife just noticed it the other day. Time to impress her. Well I hope anyway. Thanks for the great videos!
I know this was a long time ago but thanks. Was the backer also regular glass sheet?
This was extremely helpful thank you!! I appreciate you taking the time to explain step by step.. 👍
You're very welcome!
Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge! I was looking to repair my truck's bed cover which is fiberglass. I believe this video has helped me tremendously. At least, I have a starting point. I love saving $ and doing it myself.
Looks great. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Very helpful video! Thank you for explaining this whole process so clearly. Our shower has a 1-inch hole in the top after I removed the ceiling light. This gives is some ideas of what to expect from a patch.
We have a Rockwood mini lite and a tree has punctured our door three times with small limbs. I'm using bondo and will let you know how it goes. Pretty good so far and thanks for sharing how to match the paint, that was my next problem and I knew I would be clear coating everything
You did a great job with this! Nice!
Thanks for sharing. I've been looking for something like this
Looks good, I've got to do a similar repair. Thanks.
Nice work! Just what I needed.
Would you by any chance know the paint code they gave you ??
Hello. Excellent instructions on fixing the hole in your trailer's front face! I have a Micro Lite which I believe is the twin to your Mini Lite so the Filon (laminate) color should be the same. I need to repair a few small holes and would like to repairs to match the trailer's color. Could you provide me the mix details for the custom paint you had made? Thank you.
Sorry for the delay. Seen me an email, I'll send you some photos of he can with the formula stuff. marionblairjr@gmail.com
WEST systems and West Marine are TWO DIFFERENT COMPANIES! WEST System is actually Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique and was initially used in cold formed wood boats... Also, you might want to spray some expanding foam in the hole for insulation. Also TotalBoat makes good epoxy kits too!
Man when I heard you talk I knew you were from my home lol! My camper caught a branch through it in the last hurricane that came through carencro. I just had it hauled up to Washington for me and finally getting around to dealing with the hole. Gotta get everything out of it first. Pretty sure I got some water in there but the good thing is it’s so dry here none of it sits. We’ll see how it goes.
Are those special mesh patches for fiberglass? Or could you use Sheetrock patches?
Did u sand it before u applied the hairs?
Yes, it's tapered.
What a great job!
Can you give me the name and address of the place you got the paint mix? I want to repair a part of my rv too...
Thanks LH
Sorry I missed this, let me know if you still need it.
Ur doing Gods work, thx for sharing.
Appreciate that.
What is that backing plate you made made out of?
Some fiberglass mess coated with fiberglass to make it stiff.
Great Job!
Thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you!
How old is your mini light, and is it made from Azdel? We have a 2021 Rockwood minilite 2205S, the shower sprayer just wasn’t cutting it, so my wife bought a new one from oxigenics shower head, it came with pretty long stainless steel screws and I thought they were a little long but did not think they would poke through the back side of the camper 🤦♂️, so now I have a screw hole that went all the way through to the outside! My wife is not to happy with me…..
I learned something from your post. Yes, apparently the material is from Azdel. gotraveltrailers.com/which-travel-trailers-use-azdel/. Just put some silicon over the hole till you can fix it so water doesn't start delamination of the wall.
@@MarionBlair thank you, I went to Lowe’s and got some GE silicone II, looks terrible but Atleast it’s protected.
What is the backing piece made from?
Aluminium mesh
Backup camera add on project? I’d be curious to see something work with the UConnect 8.4. Good vid.
I'll certainly look into it.
Did you leave the hole empty or did you put something behind the filler
I used the mesh as in the video but there will be a gap between the two wall as everywhere else. Still looks like the day we patched it.
great video
Great work 👏
Thanks ✌️
thank you for sharing
That looks good. Where ya buying the stuff from? I'm sorry if you said and I missed it
West Marine, comes in a kit with all the stuff premixed. simple to use. www.amazon.com/WEST-SYSTEM-105-K-Fiberglass-Repair/dp/B007D2QV5Q/ref=asc_df_B007D2QV5Q/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312062016371&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=14690455738776241442&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9025237&hvtargid=pla-632201327277&psc=1
Thanks for the very helpful video. I've watched the West Marine's videos, but there was nothing about painting. Can you list up what tools you used for the painting and how you did it? I need to do a similar job for a hole in my camper.
The painting is the easiest part. After you've got it sanded and ready to paint, I used a place here in Lafayette, La. I think it's Car Color Center. You bring your trailer to them and they use their camera to match the color and then mix up the color and put it in a spray can. Then you get another spray can with the clear coat. I put a few coats of each. So 2 cans, one for the paint and one for the clear coat, both in Kyrlon type cans. I think it was $50 - + for both. You can get the paint in a can if you prefer to use an air sprayer but this worked perfectly for me. The paint people can tell you the specifics of the paint but it's simple. Can out great.
Great job. I'm guessing you saved a few bucks with that repair!
Thanks, probably $150 and my time which ain't worth much.
I beg to differ Marion that looks great
Do you have links to the items you bought? Which west marine kit is it?
What kind of mesh is that?
Yes, www.westmarine.com/buy/west-system--105-k-fiberglass-boat-repair-kit--12954095?recordNum=1 You can also buy the individual parts of the kit alone also.
Good video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks
Can you provide Website or contact infor of the place your got the spray paint from? I tried googling them, but didn't find anything. Thank you!

Can you please tell me what the genstar color for the rv is, is there a code or anything that can help please.
Yea, send me an email to marionblairjr@gmail.com but be aware that the colors were created by a camera shot of my specific camper.
So why didn’t you use Eternabond to temp repair? Would have been a lot easier to clean up.
Because that's all I had was some silicon And I wanted to make sure that water did not get in and I could finish my vacation.
You sound uncannily like henry fonda in the movie , on golden pond. Watching your video as my step dad just put two big holes in his starblazer here in the u.k and also took out the neighbours wall. Guessing they may go through the insurance but he does like to tinker but what I could do in a day takes him a month in general.
Lots of people say I sound like Bob Ross the artist that was once on tv now deceased.
@@MarionBlair I know who you are on about he is the artist in the background on a television in a series of peepshow which is a popular British television series they call him god in the series lol. I wouldn't disagree but to my ears you henry fonda :-) you have a meditative voice akin to voiceover narration on some history channel television programmes.
@@stevenlupanko2983 I'll take it, ha ha
What epoxy did you use?
West Marine, you can get everything you need in one little kit for about 35 40 bucks
what material did you use for the backing?
I cut a circle out of fiberglass mesh, placed it in the lid of a plastic cap off a yogurt or margarine container (the expoy won't stick to the slick plastic lid).. I pour the epoxy resin mix over the top of it and made sure the fiberglass soaked up the resin and let it set up. It makes a perfect backing. Cut it just a little bigger than the hole but not so big that you can't bend it enough to get it in the hole. I put a screw in the center of it just to hole it. coat the back side of the hole with resin and bend it and put it in place and let it set up. It doesn't have to be real tight, just something to keep it in place. Once it's set up you can paint some epoxy over it to get it secured and water tight. Then I started putting the layers of fiberglass over that.
Can you do this on a fiberglass tub?
Yes, much easier on a tub, could be just a bubble in the fiberglass that happens a lot on tub which makes for a very easy repair. That was the situation on my mother shower which was repaired by my sister
Can we follow your steps as well?
You just used epoxy to cover the hole with the fiberglass sheets?
@@funwiththeborjabrothers8758 yes no problem
What epoxy do you recommend to use on tub?
Thank you! Very helpful!
Great video thank you
Awesome!!
Nice video
Very nice
Well... Knocked a hole in mine...

What's the name of that resin?

@@MarionBlair Thank you sir.
Hey, did you have any sinking issues that someone mentioned?
Oh yes, my wife was watching me back up but didn't look up to see the branch. I was in a Walmart parking look, very late at night. Fortunately, the Walmart was open all night so I went in and bought a tube of silicon and a gun and sealed it right away. It's no big deal to fix as long as water doesn't get in and de-laminate the siding.
@@MarionBlair mine is the front cap. So there shouldn't be any walls to delaminate.
I really do appreciate your videos. Keep the good work going.
In fits of drunken rage i threw a chair into my wall. Now i have a hole. Time to patch it up
Ha, I've been there.
The repair will sink and after a year keen eyes will be able to see it
It's an RV not a boat.
Marion Blair Sink or sinkage means that the repair will shrink back if a lot of material is used. Ie the paint will sink back into the repaired area differently to surrounding area so it can be seen.
I used West Marine's repair procedure, I would argue it stronger than the original cheap RV siding. It's been over a year, so far so good. "Too strong never failed"

Don't you be blame it on on the wife mister
Excellent video, very comprehensive.
