He was also one to not follow orders and was rather arrogant and often disciplined for that. He wasn't a hero and he basically caused his death and the wreck by not following his instructions that night. In that period people needed and wanted heros and an railroad engineer was the top of the dream list for jobs and admired by everyone and he was certainly a public figure then.
