    Just so you know. The CREATIVES were the ones that wanted Mcdonalds in the show. Literally read the whole article on why it happened, the writers and director wanted something that felt nostalgic and warm. They reached out to McDonald's not even knowing if they were going to be allowed to use the restaurant or not.

    • @theAstarrr

      Plus it's not bad. They nailed the feel, it hardly feels like product placement, there's literally just one or two scenes where they mention the actual sandwich names.

    • @at_oussama
      @at_oussama 11 місяців тому +6

      @@theAstarrr EXACTLY! It feels like when someone first time hearing about product placement, and they believe whenever they see a brand somewhere, they think it is one. you can tell the writers definitely wrote McDonald's into the script (some comment here proved that too) because of cinematic reason (hate it or not, the McDonald's colours are reminiscent of the 80's). McDo gets the publicity, and the writers get to create that feeling, the audience gets to feel nostalgic, it's a three way win, simple as that.

    • @angieleel
      @angieleel 10 місяців тому +3

      Yeah. I read articles about this. McDonalds was purposefully put there. And the deal was made easily because before the season 2, Disney and McDonalds were in some talks about a deal or something, so getting McDo involved in Loki was easy.

    I have a different take on the McDonald's thing. For me, it was all about the nostalgia. McDonald's was insanely popular in the 80's. Nothing says 1982 like that classic roof, the old orange uniforms with the caps, the old school menu board. It did not make me want to eat McDonald's at all. It just made me a little nostalgic for my childhood. Also, I love the idea that after everything Sylvie went through in season 1, she decided to settle into a nice, simple, quiet life. She actually seemed happy living in Oklahoma and working at a McDonald's in 1982. There was something very sweet about that.

    I agree with Pat. This is nowhere near the worst example of product placement. In I, Robot, someone asked Will Smith what he was wearing and he said "Converse All-stars, vintage 2004!" while he literally put his foot in front of the camera as it zoomed in. It's hard to say any of the Loki shots actually changed the direction or cinematography to promote McDonalds.

      The only thing bad about that product placement is claiming Chucks are from 2004 lol. A character wearing old stuff and explaining the old stuff they're wearing isn't egregious. People do things like that in normal everyday life. Imagine wearing some British Knights or LA Gear and a 20 year old asks you what they are... RE: McDonald's. I never thought twice about the whole 'product placement' thing. It seemed like a good way to illustrate that Sylvie was after a more simple life. I'd fully believe that they wrote the whole episode, then went to McDonald's afterwards, not the other way around. Getting distracted from the story by product placement is your own fault. If you take it as part of the show, then it works fine. If you see it and think "product placement," then you distract yourself with it by making assumptions.

    Can't believe I'm saying it but I'm kinda with Pat over Mickey on this one. Not even really over the fact that the product placement was egregious (it was) but it seems like Mickey let it pull him out of the show more than everyone else. When I was watching the episode, I just accepted the fact that the setting for the scene was in a McDonald's and it wouldn't be unreasonable for someone to mention McDonald's products in a McDonald's 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Look man they went to McDonald's once. Sylvie went in an end credit scene in EP 1 so for the most part McDonald's was in EP 1 very very very little. Loki saw Sylvie she asked are you gonna order something? Mobius gets two lines about the apple pie. Brad comments on that they could get it to go and then they leave. And we get one more scene when Sylvie was back at McDonald's but SHE WORKS THERE. I don't think the McDonald's product placement was bad at all. Plus I love McDonald's. And I love that they went to McDonald's in the MCU. To me it's just cool. Everytime I see McDonald's now I think of Loki and of course we're gonna be spending time with Loki for 6 weeks and people are gonna be watching episodes in between Thursdays so to me in my opinion I love the McDonald's product placement. There's good product placement and there's bad/egregious product placement IMO. To use a video game example, Crazy Taxi is an example of good product placement because you're taking people to real-life locations like Pizza Hut etc. and it feels more real to the player and draws them into the world. Same for McDonalds here, we've all stepped inside one at least once in our lives and it doesn't feel forced. Plus, it's mundane and ordinary: Something Sylvie desperately wanted. It's the perfect life for her and her ideal job.

    From what I heard, the show runners were the ones who wrote McDonalds into the show, so blame them if you don’t like it. Although I also heard McDonalds was about to offer a sponsorship so it was an easy yes when they asked McDonalds if they could use their IP.
    Mikey, you seem worried about product placement ruining the show that probably wasn’t there. I got the impression that McDonalds practically let Marvel do whatever they wanted.

    What an amazing episode. Loki Season 2's set design is outstanding. The cinematography in this episode was superb. I enjoyed the banter between OB and Casey. After watching this episode, I was craving McDonald's. Miss Minutes and Ravonna Renslayer are forming a powerful team. Loki's interrogation of Brad Wolfe/X-5 was amazing. Brad Wolfe was an actor who played a serial killer named Zaniac in the comics; nevertheless, he was eventually surpassed by the real Zaniac, a demonic monster from the Dark Dimension. I hope we'll learn more about Mobius' past before he was abducted by the TVA this season. In The Automat, I really like the discussion between Loki and Mobius. I noticed Sylvie wearing He Who Remains' TemPads.During the Zaniac! premiere, a reporter questions X-5/Wolfe about rumors that he's dating Bridgette Bardot. Bardot was a renowned French model, singer, and actress from the 1950s until the 1970s. This includes duplication casting, bursts of green magical energy, and many illusions that slow "Brad Wolfe" down. Loki, on the other hand, utilizes his own shadows to hold X-5 in an alleyway, a stunning new talent that matches the God of Mischief perfectly. Loki also admits that after his scepter and the Mind Stone failed to corrupt Iron Man's mind in Avengers, it was his wrath that drove him to hurl Tony Stark out the window: It wasn't tactical.

    Loki producer Kevin R. Wright said that it was *their* choice, not McDonald's, to do the "product placement." It was they who asked McDonald's if they could put them in the series. He said:
    "But it sort of came about, truly, through trying to find a metaphor to tell the story of wanting a small, quiet life, where she could explore free will and what that means. What does it mean to live a life? What does it mean to have friends? And I think through a nostalgic lens of McDonald's in the ‘80s, I think we're able to easily tell that story to our audience where they go, “Oh, I remember that. I remember going there for a party. I remember going and doing this. I know what it's like to grow up in a small town.” It just gave us a world to do that. The exciting thing was McDonald's was all in, and they realized we weren't trying to make fun of them. It was a real embrace of that kind of nostalgia."

    McDonalds is just such a regular thing, that them including it as an actual plot point in the show didn’t feel weird or egregious to me. I literally stopped noticing it after the initial establishing shot. Sylvie works there. That’s a literal story beat, the fact that she’s now living the life she wants working at a McDonald’s with her coworker in the 80s with the shows same retro style, so no duh we’re going to get multiple shots of it. It’s not like they were in the TVA chomping on a Big Mac and making sure the sodas logo was in frame randomly because they just felt like going out to get it. They were at a McDonald’s building because Sylvie works there, and believe it or not, we’re probably gonna see some McDonalds signs and logos while… at that building. Ya know… Sylvie’s place of work. If they switched it out with literally any other restaurant or some unnamed place, nothing in the story or dialogue would change. If Mickey was getting distracted by it, that’s on him for deciding to harp on it and constantly hold it in the back of his mind when it’s a literal non-issue. What if the viewers got distracted by the big ol Tokyo treat box sitting front in center of the camera throughout the entire reaction? We wouldn’t, because it’s a non-issue and unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

    Episode was great, it became my favourite so far. Loved how they combined action, comedy and drama in this one 👍👏👏👏
    X5 is a really interesting character, I want more of his backstory in the next episodes. Actor did good 👍
    Aaa I really missed Hiddleston's dramatic talent, which was shown in these two parts of psychological duel with X5. He nailed it perfectly 👏
    Also the part with Loki showing his powers of creating illusions to chase after X5 was pretty awesome 😍 It's my fav part too 😊
    And Obi, of course, shined in this episode too 😂
    I get annoyed with Sylvie in this one. I mean I could understand her wanting to have a quiet life but blaming those who was her friends in these people's deaths was too much. I mean the evil ones there were Kang and that crazy general woman, plus Sylvie herself is someone, who is partly guilty too. But she just wants to lock herself of this kind of shell and pretend to not care 😒

    I love how everyone keeps forgetting about that small little word “incursion”. incursions in marvel comics are irreversible. The only way you stop them is by destroying the other world/timeline you’re on a collision course with. Pruning seems bad until they find out that more people will die if they let timelines branch uncontrollably. Everyone’s was team Sylvie last season, but it seems more and more apparent that he who remains was not lying about anything that he said. “heroes” make everything worse before they “fix” them in the MCU. We're going to see a lot of people die in this saga.

    I disagree with the dislike of product placement. We see these brands in our daily lives. Brands are the props and environments of our lives, like popular music is the soundtrack of our lives. Having a non-brand (like Oceanic Airlines, or Duff Beer) does more to pull me out of the narrative.
    And I agree with charging for the convenience.
    It’s a win-win.
    I also recognize the influence it has. From the brand’s perspective it evoke nostalgia to motivate another purchase. But the same thing would happen if one is walking down the street with a friend, talking about the day, and passing a McDonalds.

  • @eingoluq

    THAT WAS DEFINITELY NOT PRODUCT PLACEMENT. It didn't feel like it to me at all. I don't live in America so maybe it didn't feel overdone to me, but the logo was barely ever shown. it was off to the side, obscured and not distracting. I think because you knew the brand and its colours so intently it felt like it was in your face. for me, it wasn't.
    The showrunners clearly wanted to have McDonalds in the episode as where Sylvie went to work. It is a typical place where people start of working. I doubt McD paid for it. but it was rather the opposite.

    @The Normies,
    13:47 Mikey! Are you serious! "For All Time. Always," is the motto of the TVA! Kang is the guy who wants to control all time, every aspect of it. The Sacred Timeline is his spoils of war and the TVA is safeguarding his trophy.
    Currently, there is nothing our heroes can do to threaten Kang because he knows as long as time continues as is or is set free, that he'll come back to do it all over again, and he knows how the story ends--he wins!
    18:51 Sure he is! Brad lives where he can see the beginning of time and its ending in the same setting.
    26:13 They aren't going to touch the Sacred Timeline, as protecting it is the job of the TVA. They're going to destroy the new realities branching off of it. Sylvie's reality is one such branch.
    27:39 They aren't gone, Casey had a bunch of them last season, and he told us that other analysts were using a couple of them on their desks as paperweights last season, remember? The thing IS the Infinity Stones do not work in the TVA--Kang did something to it to make sure Variants like Loki couldn't do anything to the workers when brought in to be judged; we know that powers can be used outside of time as we saw Loki and Sylvie use their powers in Kang's citadel at the end of time.
    28:26 He Who Remains' Temp Pad.
    You might want to get over your dislike for product placement, as it going to keep popping up. Sylvie has been running from the TVA for most of her life, and we learned last season that she's older than Loki, and the MCU told us that Thor and Loki were 1,500 years old! When Sylvie arrived at McDonald's she learned that they had an assortment of food that wasn't a squirrel, rat, or possum and that their food was faceless.
    What's something happy people, sad people, poor people, and rich people all have in common? They all love food! McDonald's is Sylvie's new castle, her new Asgard. It brings her joy, so we're going to keep seeing it until she feels like it's time to leave it behind, but even then, I think she's going to want to come back here, as it is the one place that she's felt safe for most of her life.
