Big respect for whoever had the intuition to video this early performance. Also doesn't this show Gary lucas was a big part of Jeff's work. Would Grace had become as famous an album without Gary's influence......
@Paul Versey Gary asked an acquaintance of his to film this show, as well as the other duets, and Gods and Monsters concerts with Jeff, minus the Roulette Club show, which was filmed by the owner of said club, I believe.
Gary certainly played a pivotal role in the success of Grace, as the title track, as well as Mojo Pin, are two of the strongest songs on the album.

@Sam A It’s crazy to think that Jeff was only twenty five, here. I was two months shy of turning nine, at the time. Speaking of which, I broke my baby toe on my birthday, that year, by running into a doorframe, in the dark, in my basement. My older brother shut off the lights and said, “I think I heard a ghost.” as he ran upstairs, and I bolted toward the door, accidentally catching said toe on the frame, causing it to dislocate to nearly a 90 degree angle.
For most of that summer, I had to hop around on one foot, like Mr. Bean, in that episode where he took off his shoe, placed it on the roof of an adjacent car, which then drove off with said shoe still on it, as he hopped around town, worried to put his one foot down, as he tried to retrieve his shoe.
A sad fact that I know this, but as just short of two weeks ago, I have now outlived Jeff. Puts it into stark reality just how young he really was and how much more he could've done, because I feel this for myself at this age.
Love the video - I might be projecting because we know what happened shortly after but it does feel the two of them are quite distant here. Mainly from Jeff's side. Having said that, I don't feel that's necessarily the case musically, as this is one of the best videos of their collaboration in my view.
@@gregoryfrench2227 Well, this gig was one month after Jeff quit Gods and Monsters, following their show at the Knitting Factory, on March 22, 1992. Jeff agreed to finish his remaining booked gigs with Gary, thus, one has to take that into account when judging any suspected tension between them.
Besides collaborating on the Grace sessions, the following year, this show was the second last time that Jeff and Gary played together; the final time being nearly five years later, at the Knitting Factory (Jeff’s last New York City appearance), in February 1997.

Jeff seems uncomfortable without a guitar. I have friends who are guitarists and the guitar is almost like another limb. I can’t help but wonder if it was like that for Jeff.
I believe Gary still owns and frequently uses the same guitar shown here. I'm hoping to hear Jeff's Tele get used by Bellamy on future Muse songs- such an interesting tone and a rich, rich history.

@James Xu My pleasure. Indeed, regarding Edith Piaf. This version of Hymne à l'amour is stunning, though. It is the highlight of this performance, along with How Long Will It Take. The latter of which this particular version has always been one of Jeff’s best vocal performances, in my opinion. His voice sounds so delicate and pure, on that track, and it is beautifully complemented by Gary’s swelling Hawaiian guitar sound.
@@MojoPin1983 Agreed. However if you want the purity of his voice for Hymne A L'Amour then in my opinion his Bataclan version is my favourite. It’s only his voice and the soft, warm accompaniment of his guitar. I just wish he did the whole thing in French ahah. But anyway the whole live at Bataclan set is recorded perfectly in my opinion. The balance between the vocal clarity and the instruments is mixed flawlessly. The way young lovers do at Bataclan is an example of what I mean.

My fav parts are when Jeff tries to sync up with Gary’s sound fx on hyme really soaring over guitar creating incredible harmonies. Also on mojo pin when Gary pauses and Jeff fades out vocally with him. He didn’t do it so much on this version but on other versions it feels like your getting hit with a gust of wind just feeling the power. Like a breath of fresh air walking outside. I mentioned Gary is my uncle before. They had a great bond. Like 2 souls who were destined to create music. Yah I made the groove inlays on my acoustic silver and gold to pay tribute to the silver / gold lyric on mojo pin 🎸🎶

@Gabriel Magallanes They didn’t always get along. Jeff wanted to lead Gary’s band, Gods and Monsters, but Gary didn’t want to play second fiddle to Jeff, which caused conflict between them, ultimately leading to Jeff’s departure from said band.
Gary wrote a whole book about that, called Touched By Grace: My time with Jeff Buckley. It's a fascinating read. They wrote those first few songs in Gary's apartment, and writing the book Gary worked from tapes of those rehearsals, so there's an incredible amount of detail. Basically Gary was thinking of Gods and Monsters as being like Led Zeppelin, with the singer and the guitarist sharing the foreground; Jeff wanted a band more like Queen, with the vocalist clearly being the frontman. I'm just thankful that they were able to give us the songs that they could, before they went their separate ways.

@MajorSev That’s a great gig. To answer your question, to be honest, I haven’t listened to enough gigs, all the way through, to have an informed opinion on the matter. I don’t tend to listen to his bootlegs very often, as I’ve heard the same songs so many times, in audio form, that it can feel monotonous to listen to dozens of different versions of them. I’m more interested in footage, as the addition of live visuals, from his concerts, adds a tangible quality and greater intensity to his performances, hence the visual exclusivity of my channel.

Discovered Jeff about a year and six months ago. Replicating his singing made me progress a lot as a singer. Really put a lot of things into perspective as far as singing technique goes.
He might just be the greatest rock singer ever. Holy hell the attention he put into every little nuances and detail. Not to mention he can pretty much sing everything.
Seamless transition between vocal registers. Total command over vocal compression. The unique vibrato.
"Grace" is also a great study on songwriting, unique harmony, crescendo, style blending and interesting melodies. I also like the fact that his singing is not always straightforward in conjuctjon to his guitar playing. His sense of rhythm was really interesting.
He strike me as an extremely hardworking perfectionist. Very inspiring.
@@majorsev830 Those are good observations. Jeff definitely is the greatest rock singer that has ever lived, not just because of his incredible range, but the nuances in his vocal phrasing, as you mentioned. Freddie Mercury often tops ‘best singer’ lists because he was a powerful vocalist, but he didn’t have anywhere near the nuance that Jeff did, which is what makes Jeff so interesting to listen to; his voice was so unpredictable, and never followed a straightforward model.
@@MojoPin1983 Right, Freddie is honestly overrated XD not tryna undermine his talents but his singing is really overrated. A lot of rock singers just power through a song by belting everything either in a high chest voice aggressive yelling type of singing or very compressed head voice or mix. But Jeff glides between registers like every two sec or so XD
He was a master of dynamics.
It's not the same level of compression throughout a song, but constant pressure and release. He had absolute control on his airflow.
Also he doesn't use falsetto as some kind of relief when a note is hard to hit. He uses falsetto as an artistic decision. Perfect examples of this is his singing on "Last Goodbye", "Dream Brother", and "Grace".
Up, down, up, down all while doing crazy inflections and riffs. It's like a graceful dance. Its flowing like water. Even his note choices when doing riffs and runs is totally creative and unique. He was definitely one of the best in utilizing melismatic singing. Definitely due to his jazz and eastern influences.
Two of many things I picked up from his singing is doing a distorted yell and slowly releasing compression then seamlessly transitioning into a very soft falsetto without break (Mojo Pin). And the reverse of that, singing in falsetto then applying compression and turning it into a full sounding mix/head voice (End of Last Goodbye. "And the memories, offer signs that it's oveeeeeeeeeee...ahahheuuo" that part lol)
The way he sings certain parts or a note also serves the storytelling/context behind his lyrics. It's really crazy how much attention he put in every little detail.
I love how he just goes nuts in his live performances. He's a fearless performer.
Maybe he was trying to best Tim?
Tim was equally brilliant as well.
I especially f*ckin love Goodbye and Hello, Happy Sad and Starsailor. Starsailor holy hell. I found myself giggling like a kid when I first heard that album. What an album. I love how Tim didn't give a shit if it was commercial viable or not and followed his artistic vision.
@@majorsev830 Man, your breakdown of Jeff's voice in your posts are super impressive and gives greater technical insight into why he is an alien vocalist. I also appreciate that you have a great appreciation for his father, who to this day is disturbingly underrated as a vocalist and artist. When i first listened to the StarSailor album it half frightened me/half blew me away lol. "Monterrey", i think should be used as a case study in college vocal music classes, since it is a masterclass vocal performance imo. And then he follows-up that vocal freak-out with "Moulin Rouge", which is one of Tim's most gorgeous pop songs. That man was a trip lol, and Jeff definitely mirrored (and arguably mastered) that frenetic eclecticism on "Grace" 🙏🏽😊
Totally unrelated question but how many JB books have you read? And what's your opinion on them?
@sleepover disaster I’ve only read Dream Brother and Merri Cyr’s books. I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. The other books were released well after my most infatuated years with respect to Jeff and his music, therefore, I haven’t gotten around to reading them, as I began to focus more on other things, such as building up my video archive. I’m curious to read Dave Lory’s book, and probably will, at some point.

@@liamcraddock541 I disagree. Despite producing excellent material together, both needed to go their separate ways in order to achieve their unique musical visions. You can't have two bosses competing for different results. Jeff needed to do his thing, and Gary the same, without having to compromise.
