A heat tip from rural Australia, especially when you have no power ... Cover and close your windows with dark blankets and curtains during the day. It keeps some of the heat out. You won't think it is doing much until you go outdoors and notice the temperature difference. South Australia had a state wide power outage for up to 10 days, in 2016, when a bad storm rolled through the state. Fortunately we had no power for just over 24 hours, and didn't lose food in the fridge or freezer. We used the bbq to cook with, and in the morning boiled water on it, which we stored in large thermoses
When a storm or hurricane is coming (I'm in Florida) I eat up all the food in the fridge and don't go to the store. I put six large juice bottles of water in the freezer a couple of days before the storm so when the power goes out I can put whatever food left over in the freezer and it will keep for days. The freezer is the same as a cooler, very insulated. If you don't open the door too much or keep it open, you will have a place to store your foods. Take one bottle out as you need the space for stuff. I have canned heat to cook over, and candles. I also have a small hibachi for the porch with self-lighting charcoal.
The more you talk about that time with no power, the more it reminds me of being in MS after Katrina. Dry ice in the freezer can help save your food too. Id rather not have a frost-free freezer now because the frost in mine is what saved my food for a week. Usually local churches will stay open as shelters too.

They've only ever left the house for the vet. I didn't want to traumatize them. If it had been longer, I would have rethought that
