  • In this episode of The Intelligent Vocalist, I talk with Kerrie Obert, a Speech-Language Pathologist, Singing Voice Specialist, and Voice Teacher, about vocal tremors that can develop in aging voices, and the current treatments available to help find stability in the voice again.
    Episode Highlights:
    - There is unfortunately still not a lot that is known about what can cause a tremor to develop.
    - A tremor and vibrato have some shared neurological origins.
    - The techniques in Kerrie Obert’s course can also help with wobbly vibrato.

Wow, thanks for this John! I was recently diagnosed with essential vocal tremor after about 6 years of losing upper range and losing control in the middle... I noticed tension and thickening in chest register; less range available in chest register; passagio getting more difficult to navigate over these years, and loss of high range and loss of the ability to sing pure head voice. Age 63 now, I am grateful for these Kerrie's ideas! Question: do you know if essential tremor connected to loss of high notes in post menopausal women?

Essential tremor can indeed limit range because of the use of tension to attempt to control the tremor. Changes in body hormones are also going to reduce range post menopause. Check out the book, Singing Through Change.
