Take a shot every time lord Henry says something lowkey misogynistic/ blatantly misogynistic, or not technically misogynistic but it sure doesn't feel right
after chapter 3 it only goes downhill! argh! but I guess I should congratulate Oscar Wilde for writing a character that actually encapsulates most of what's wrong with men. And the worst is that the asshole has so much influence! Only Basil seems immune (I'm not even halfway though).
+EstherSylvia Firlej-Perisin Thanks for your comments EstherSylvia. Yes, being read a great story by a great reader really transports you to a new dimension. Glad you are enjoying it. FAB
I am enjoying this. It is well written . When I have read more modern books, they seem to go off in the strangest directions. This book never loses it's tone and texture. The narrator sound old and harsh and I feel as if I'm listening to Wilde speaking himself
"The ugly and the stupid have the best of it in this world. They can sit in their ease and gape at the play. If they know nothing of victory, they are at least spared the knowledge of defeat. They live as we all should live: undisturbed, indifferent and without disquiet. They neither bring ruin upon others not ever receive it from alien hands" 💕

+potthead meg Thanks for your comments Meg. I totally agree with you about being able to work and listen at the same time. I once spent 3 days painting a house and instead of hating the experience, I listened to an audiobook as I worked and couldn't wait to get started each day. What a difference!
I liked Lord Henry and Dorian, I love that they don't care about being politically correct and endulge in such pretentious events constantly spreading their philosophy.
If Lord Henry lived today he would be such a Karen. I can see him asking to talk to the manager in Starbucks cause he ordered a grande pumpkin spiced late, and got a venti instead. Edit: Thank you for this, it really helps me.
Then you understand the book. Oscar wants us to hate this beautiful man. Unlike the other characters we are free from the spell of his beauty. Ironically we who can not see him, are the only ones who really do.
I always come back to this book for Lord Henry though when I was younger I thought he was brilliant and now as I'm older I see I'd fallen for the same bs as Dorian lmao
I find this the most beautiful book ever written ❤️ One admires and loves Dorian Gray as much as hating him for his choices. For me it will always be love because Oscar Wilde will always be my spirit animal ❤️

What’s interesting to me is that arguably the story is about Dorian being gay on some level, but basil was functionally in love with him, where Henry merely lusted, without regard for Dorian, His wife or even his own well being
So glad o finally came back to this after soamy years. I've always loved to story and to hear it in full was just brilliant. Loved the movie as well, so diffrent and yet they tell their own beautiful tales

whats the point of having chapter 11 In this book someone help me explain it, I get that its about the books Dorian read , but I dont get why its in the book. Is it important?
The book he reads is a French decadent novel, the time skip and his indulgence of beautiful things is representative of his corruption and the danger of beauty. He avoids it but the portrait is a symbolism of the decline of his soul
His corruption due to materialism. I think that is what the chapter conveys. His fascination with clothes and jewels shadowing his innocence we saw in Basil's studio.
I first read this book when I was 13 and thought it was the cleverest book of all time. I haven’t returned to it ever since. I’m now 24, and revisiting it makes me realize just how misogynistic it is.
Of course! But in the context of when the book is written this is just how it was. Not that I agree with it. it's crazy how far women's rights have come since then and even still there seems like a long way to go
I wouldn't say that the book ITSELF is sexist just cuz two of the characters are. That's like calling Indiana Jones racist and antisemitic for having nazi characters.
Before finishing: I wanna write my thoughts down about this book before I start it, because I'm honestly quite excited to read it. I was a suggestion from my mother after reading another classic, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. She said that since I clearly enjoyed older, more classical novels (as I had read The Island of Doctor Moreau the week prior) that I would enjoy this.
