Outstanding! I took a little while for some preliminaries to get laid out, but then things moved along at quite a clip, and without letting up. And lots of little twists along the way. It kept me engaging, guessing, and entertained.
What a great movie! Fast-paced, well scripted, acted & directed & so much character & charm... And a great plot-twist at the end. All in under 60 minutes! Thanks for sharing a true gem.
I'm a Stranger, released UK July 1952. Greta Gynt, Self; James Hayter as Horatio Flowerdew; Hector Ross as Inspector Craddock; Patric Doonan as George Westcott; Jean Cadell as Hannah Mackenzie; Charles Lloyd Pack as Mr. Cringle; Fulton Mackay (as Fulton MacKay) as Alastair Campbell; Martina Mayne as Mary; Raymond Young, Constable; John Kelly, 2nd. Constable.
had to look up film TRIO to get Hayter name. Thanx. American so am bit below in character names of blimey limeys. ha. Anglophile. Scots too. Now I'm gang agley. I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING.
Nice little film. I’d stilll have arrested that lawyer for something. Anything. You know what they say, you know it’s cold when you see a lawyer with his hands in his own pockets.
I can't quite figure out why they chose to have Greta Gynt play herself in a fictional situation. She could just as easily have used a fake character name. Maybe she agreed to do it as a public relations ploy to improve the public's impression of her (not that it needed improving). She was from all accounts a charming lady even if some of her previous films had her playing evil Femme Fatales. Could she have been recuperating from a minor injury? Was she about to go on vacation and filmed all the scenes involving her with the rest of the cast before leaving? Was there some kind of obscure clause in her contract that made this a requirement? This is almost as mysterious as the plot of the film.
The cabbie was the ex verger the lead in 1st story in TRIO, a prestige trilogy introduced by famed author Somerset Maugham. James Hayter? Maugham's QUARTET preceded. Steinbeck introduced FULL HOUSE, based on short stories of....O Henry. One sequence of THAT remade with Ignatowski//Fester/Doc Time Traveler....Chris LLoyd. Comedy kidnapping.
Great little flick... but no credits and I just can't find any info on the very existence of this masterpiece of shoestring succintness and British stiff up lip-ness!
All you need to do is put the title of any film into the Google search bar followed my the letters Imdb (for Internet Movie DataBase) and the cast list will come up.
That "solicitor" got on my nerves. What a pompous blowhard. Where is Bogey when you need him? He could have grabbed him by the collar and gave him a backhand or two. Told him, "You're going to take it and like it!"
@@williamf4544 The constant smoking in every scene just reminded me of those days long ago when people just smoked one after another, not that it was the only way I remembered my family. I will finally remember to not make simple comments without expecting to be attacked for any thoughts that creep into my memories though. I'm a senior who lived through second hand smoke, but Dad and husband are long gone because of all their medical issues.
It's funny, I was thinking about how much I miss the smell of tobacco from when I was a kid. What I found offensive back then (& still do) is the pungent perfume that entered the room 2 full steps ahead of the wearer, as favored by some of my female relatives back in the day. Funny how we remember different things about the same type of thing. It's almost like everybody is different! 😉
@@viennapalace I was guilty of wearing perfumes when I was younger, but at least they were the expensive ones. I do remember getting used to the smell later in the day and adding more to myself because I couldn't smell it anymore, so must have really had on too much. We don't wear any scents in our small town because we have a few people who are so sensitive to it. There are signs in businesses here asking people not to wear them. The worst I do now is use scented soaps and only when I am not going to be around anyone. Cigarette smoke was awful for me when pregnant since it made me want to vomit. I also couldn't handle lemon-scented dishwashing liquid and still have not used any for the last 40 years because of those memories.

PS the young scottish man was played by Fulton Mackay, who 20 years later played the prison warder in Porridge.
20:57 "running away is never any good Trouble can always run faster." good one

Jean Cadell was in many ... TIGHT LITTLE ISLAND etc.
Excellent sleuthing all round…❤!

sister is a feminist lawyer monster of a sister but that just her. truth/joke
Fun movie. The actor playing Horace the window cleaner also played Mr. Tebbs in "Are You Being Served ?"
And Hobson s choice.., very famous old actor
Also Onedin line old captain
"Exceedingly good cakes" James Hayter.
@@brianhaskard1042 oh yes he’s the voice of mr Kipling well done 👍
@Don - wow, thanks for that bit of historical arc. Never would have made the connection, but kind of obvious now :)
A twist at the end.
Thank you so much for sharing this treasure 🌹
Great movie I didn’t pick the ending!
Enjoyable movie from the past. Interesting storyline.
Thank you for providing this wonderful and interesting film!! Really appreciated!!
Tidy little drama. A bit plodding in parts but well worth the effort to get to the surprise ending. Thanks for posting.
this channel has awesome films!!!!!!!!!!!

Very good movie that was just the right length for a play or Saturday matinee.
Wonderful Actors. What a Gem!
Thanks for sharing
Great carters love B&W it adds up to an entertaining film.
Nice movie. Thanks!🎉
i watched this cos it's mentioned in morrisey's autobiography, he has a fascination with the character of Cringle

Good movie!
Good ol' character flick.
Great little flick... but no credits and I just can't find any info on the very existence of this masterpiece of shoestring succintness and British stiff up lip-ness!
I just Googled I'm A Stranger 1952 and the information showed up with full cast and credits.
@@kimberlykasimoff1447 Thanks for the info. I was ultimately able to locate it on IMDB by punching in Greta Gynt. Enjoyale movie!

James Hayter (Mr KIPLING) made exceedingly good cakes
I was interested to know that Charles Lloyd-Pack, who played Mr Cringle, was Roger Lloyd-Pack's father!
That "solicitor" got on my nerves. What a pompous blowhard. Where is Bogey when you need him? He could have grabbed him by the collar and gave him a backhand or two. Told him, "You're going to take it and like it!"
Another good movie, but with only a minor love interest. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The character Mr West was played by Anthony Doonan who was to kill himself some 6 years after making this picture.
0:17 Batersea Power Station on the far right. No flying pig ?????
Did the British ever make a movie in the day time and with a room with more than a 40 watt blub?
Excellent surmamation! I have also seen that... my brightness is pushed up over the edge !!! to no avail. Thank you,,
l laugh, it was funny.
No excess due to the mind of rationing.
😂😂😂
😅😅
Close to the truth. Depression made ppl frugal, the war rationing, then it just became a way of life
Clever
All those smokers bring back bad memories of my chain-smoking father and husband. What a stink.
Get over it
It was a different time
What a horrible way to remember your family - sad really i feel sorry for you

A cracking script and cast. I love British films from that era. But just one observation. Won't they still need that will?
No, the real beneficiary is dead, but they do have the will anyway_ the old lady handed it over. ;)
OOPS!! ***SPOILER ALERT***👆👆👆🙄😳😲
@@sheppe4307 Also Spoiler Alert! Watch the ending at 53:50 carefully. The bad guy took the will and they never bothered to get it back from him :)
I get tired of this man's arrogant piffal.
What a dreadful plot, as if the police would involve those two. I did injoy it tho 😄
🤣
Very silly movie has to be the worst police INSPECTOR ever
Rubbish.
