She didn't get in because she did nothing special. Getting good grades and high sat scores is EXPECTED when you apply to an ivy league, they want something that separates you from the crowd, something that makes you worth accepting.
+Alatar As an admit to some very selective schools, I think you're grossly mistaken. There are a lot of points she made that really stood out to me as true. College admission isn't black and white, but if I were her I'd feel cheated too.
Hunter Williams To you? You're not the admissions committee, do you see thousands of other people's applications as well to make sure your daughter stands out?
+Alatar Do you know how difficult it is to be a Senate Page? Smh... wasting my time. This girl is did plenty to get into an Ivy League. It's unfortunate not one took her. Michigan is lucky to have a writer of her caliber.
Hunter Williams What else did she do relating to writing? You know lots of kids apply that have excellent writing skills and rewards...they need more in writing than just that.
It’s usually this way w people who focus on this things n this is all they have.small circle w barely any friends n high grades n their parents pushing them n they have no social life
If her application essays were as pretentious and privileged sounding as her interview here sounds, I don't blame the ivy leagues for rejecting her. When will applicants realize that admissions officers (especially Ivy League ones) can sniff out a whiny and entitled brat from a mile away?
Yeah, as soon as the college admissions officer realizes that the applicant brags/is cocky about their intelligence levels and isn't' modest about their grades they immediately look the other way. The Ivy Leagues want a kid who can benefit them. The only reason I am a bit shocked is that she was part of that Senate program which, I have heard, is highly selective and that alone could have been a contributing factor into her getting accepted.
It's great she was a Senate page but she might have been given the job because of connections or pay offs and not on merit so they need to see more of her character.
They can sniff out a whiny brat from a mile away? Well if you've spent enough time at some of these ivy leagues you would realize they need a better sense of smell.
they decided that it captured some anti-affirmative action zeitgeist and that it'd be more compelling if that sentiment came from a kid. not surprising as the wsj has long been a bastion of whiteness. that being said you're right, we should still remember she's a kid....it's the media's fault for blowing this out of proportion
Exactly. I think she had this assumption that if she had the "basic" qualifications she should be a shoo-in for the ivy league college she wants. There are kids who have 5.0 GPA, SAT scores are 24-2500 and the top ivy league schools WANTED THEM, they were not scrounging around like some sniveling brat complaining as to what else they needed to be accepted but you are getting your 15 minutes just because you couldn't get what you thought should be granted to you. It maybe was your "I'm entitled" attitude that made them see you're not fit for their school. She look and speak like she's a 20 something year old, not a teenager.
I had a 4.6 GPA, scored 2350 on the SAT and a 35 on the ACT and still got denied by the Ivy League schools I applied to. I decided to go to a "small" school and my parents nor myself have to pay for anything and I'm appreciative of that. I can go to graduate school at the bigger schools. I'm just lucky I have the opportunity to go to college.
I have no doubt that she got rejected because of her interviews. Just from seeing this one, her pompous aura stunk up my whole living room. These days, elite colleges look for more quirk, and less stereotype. I mean, someone got into Yale by writing an essay about PIZZA. They have THOUSANDS of other people applying. If you're only worried about your numbers, and saying what you THINK they want to hear, in your essay and interview, then you're just gonna be lumped in with all the other basics. Tough luck. No one to blame, but yourself (Suzy), if you're that adamant about blaming somebody.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the way I'm interpreting your comment is that you are trying to say that she should have written a satirical essay rather than a serious one, to which I would remind you that when you write your college application essays, it's better to err on the side of caution and write a serious one. What if, supposing she did write a satirical essay, that the admissions people read it and failed to recognize it as satire (as many people did with her Op-ed column), therefore assuming that she was out-and-out making fun of them? If it's vernacular, it's easily recognizable as satire, since you can use different tones of voice to indicate so, but if it's writing, the reader might have a harder time recognizing it for what it is unless you state your intentions clearly. In order to pull something like that off, I think she probably might have had to write a disclaimer of sorts at the beginning so the admissions people wouldn't be mistaken. Better to write a serious one and save the satire for other times.
Otaku Madness No what I am saying is she most likely put that "satire" in her essay and that's why the colleges rejected her cause either, A: The didn't catch the satire and thought she was being a bitch or B: They caught the satire and were not amused with it.
And yet it's all speculation. I could say that she didn't put any sort of satire in her college essay, that she took it very seriously and wrote the best essay she could, and yet both of these speculations would be unprovable unless she actually reveals what she wrote for her essay. But I do agree with her; the college application process is a joke and totally biased.
That's the difference between whites and blacks. Whites work their asses off, and you might hear one or two bitch that they're not accepted every few YEARS. Blacks on the other hand don't do shit, yet you hear them bitch every few SECONDS that they're not accepted.
she's so annoying. honestly, just go to school and get your degree because in the end, the degree you get is what's most important. going to an ivy doesn't mean you'll be more successful than people who don't. it's your degree that gets you the job.. stop whining about not getting into "top schools" that just have a lot of name recognition and go to a school, make the most of it, and graduate. god damn.
So you're telling me you wouldn't be pissed if you dedicated your entire high school career studying useless and rather uninteresting subjects (such as Math) and got rejected? Why do we even learn Math anyways? That shit is so annoying and encourages no originality or creativity. Oh yeah, and the SAT and AP Literature exams are utter bullshit. The questions seem to ask for a "proper" opinion rather than a factual answer...and then times you.
***** I don't know, he kinda has a point. I mean, the math we learn is kind of useless, especially if the career of your choice doesn't involve math. I would like to become a historian, but would I have to do slope intercept form or quadratic equations for it? Now I do think it is setting people up who do want to take up a field involving math, like writing physics engines for games or a math teacher, but for people who don't, it is kinda useless. Except maybe adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing. You do need those for receiving/getting change, leaving tips, taxes, counting the distance between time periods, etc.
Michelle Joy Carbajal Are you talking to me? Where do you get the impression that I'm implying the humanities are useless? I'd much rather learn the culture of people to understand them then learn something I'll use bare minimum for in life.
***** Although, I am an incoming computer science major I would say that the humanities are important. There needs to be a balance in all aspects and levels of life. By focusing on the humanities people learn how to connect with people effectively. If everyone focused on theory, or if everyone focused on STEM society would essentially fail in some way. Money is not everything and art may not always pay the bills. Somehow these lessons should be interconnected in all classrooms. Whatever... I am just blabbering about some utopian society in my mind
She said she poured her whole life for the past 5 years into these college applications. That's exactly what these colleges don't want and perhaps one of the reasons why she didn't get accepted.
Why do you say that? Sure, you don't want people padding their resumes, but we don't know what she did. The way I interpreted it, she had a strategy and executed. I think that is smart.
I'm basically just saying she's being a bit hypocritical. On one hand, she's saying that she put everything that she had into getting into an ivy, while on other she's criticizing people who do the exact same thing, albeit more extreme. Had she not been so concerned with getting into school the whole time, her message would be a lot stronger, IMO.
Matt Sezer I think she's making a satirical critique, quite impressive and gutsy for such a young lady. We just went through this whole thing, though with nowhere near the intensity we saw in many of our American friends who went the whole 9 yards.
Matt Sezer I would say I have to agree with you on this. Whether or not she's using "satire" as a means of expression is up for opinion because one would first have to find the element of humor in her essay and interview. I personally interpret her response as bitter and hypocritical as well. Her prejudice of those accepted into the Ivy league and uninformed opinion of why people volunteer lead me to believe that she was not truly ready or mature enough to get accepted. The fact that she had no contigency route if her plan failed was further evidence against her acceptance. In my own individual experience in healthcare, I used to work with a physician who once said that he often felt that residents from lesser known colleges frequently performed better than those from colleges with grander reputations since the notion of entitlement was not factored into their motivations.
Matt Sezer from where I see it shes not criticising the students applying but the system thats in place that causes people to build up these resumes only because they want to get in and the fact that a lot of it attributes to stuff they cant control rather than a high scoring student.
Okay, I'll change "everyone" with "most people". Happy now? Most people at least have 2250+. Your sister must have been very well accomplished in other areas.
Average is 1500. You have to remember that vast segments of the populations don't go to Ivy League schools. Standardized tests are more about time and effort than actual intellect. If you study for them and take them 4 or 5 times like many do, you will most likely get significantly better scores. I took the SAT once and got a 2170. I didn't apply to any Ivy Leagues because I likely wouldn't get in, I won't kid myself, and because I really started looking at colleges my senior year when you basically have to start freshman year if your plan is to go to the ivy league schools.
***** if you were her father it wouldn't matter because she doesn't have to listen to you. She earned it. Maybe you're just envious. Ever regret your life and not doing better in highschool?
***** I'm going through community college now. I have nothing against that. I pay my own bills and my own tuition. No student loans. Right now I have an average 3.7 gpa and I'm working my ass off because I want to get a full ride through a graduate school. The more prestigious the better because that's what employers work at.
Her GPA and SAT scores are not anywhere close to Ivy league material. She can still go to a good school with them, for sure, but it's no surprise she got rejected from Penn or Yale.
I don't know what her unweighted GPA was, but I am certain it was close to 4.0, thus her GPA was certainly in Ivy range. Her SAT is also above the 25th percentile of Yale and Penn's admissions. Her stats seemed great for Ivy league; her personality, on the other hand, was absolutely not.
25th percentile is not that great. Those below the 50th percentile generally have some sort of "hook" - legacy, special circumstances, hardships, stellar extracurriculars, etc. And why are you certain that her unweighted was close to a 4.0? I have a 5.0 W with a UW of 3.7. My GPA is being boosted 1.3, so she could very well have far below a 4.0 uw and still have a 4.5. Going off her stats alone, there is no reason to have the expectation of admission.
You missed the entire point of her gripe. She (among many others) is concerned that these elite schools are overvaluing characteristics that students cannot control…
Haha, sounds like she let her life revolve around Ivies. Talk about putting all of your eggs into one basket. I pity the people who think they have to get into an Ivy school in order to be successful in life.
I was kind of agreeing with her until the “I would have gladly worn a headdress to school.” It felt like she assumed that a minority could get into a college simply because of being a minority, when there are people of all ethnicities that get into good colleges and deserved it.
She's saying that with her grades and accomplishments, if she wore a headdress, she would have been admitted. Wearing a headdress should not make the difference maker.
Why is she crying about this? There are Asians with 4.85 GPA, 2340 SAT score, Winner of lot of acedemic competition. And he end up not accepted by Harvard, and Stanford.
SpryO3 Some schools care about diversity and will deliberately seek out students of other cultures. In some places non-whites may also qualify for affirmative action-based considerations. Although I'm not sure heikiu96z meant it that way. While we're on that topic, boosting gpa's is stupid (if this isn't a boosted gpa then you're stupid for using the 5 scale gpa.), and there's nothing impressive about it.
***** The girl from this video used the 5 scale, that's why i used it too to compare. I just want to point out the fact that this girl aren't ivy league caliber student, but she will still be sucessful.
Sorry I didn't watch the entire thing, just got annoyed she was complaining about not being good enough because of certain things and stopped watching. But yes, I completely agree with that... as long as she doesn't blame future failures on institutions lying to her instead of realizing how selective said institutions have to be and how she stacks up against competition.
Fuck these schools. Go to a good party school but with good academics and graduate. Live life while you can, why would anyone want to go to these schools? Once you graduate start a business, invest in stocks, invest in real estate, and BAM $$$ comes in just like that.
I understand what the girl's trying to say but in all honesty, why do people get hella upset for not getting accepted to Ivy Leagues? First of all, no matter how "qualified" you think you are, you have to know that you're not the only one. Basically think of thousands of kids with strong resumes that all applied to the same Ivy League you did. And combine that factor with a low ass acceptance rate, like 7%. From then on, it's pretty much a game of luck. If you do get in, wow good for you! But if you don't, you shouldn't be thinking it's the end of the world. Only 50% of Harvard graduates get a job after graduating. Lolol that means there are people who graduated from the so-called "Best School" but cant even get employed and pay off their college loan debts. So I honestly do not and cannot understand why people want to go to Ivy Leagues that desperately. Are you in it for the name or something? That's great but you should keep in mind that being employed and having a career MIGHT be more valuable than going to a school with a prestigious title. It's not like Yale and Harvard are the only schools in the USA that offer law school or something. Smh.
I voiced this very same opinion my father and he was extremely appalled. For me, I had two science teachers. Both Caucasian women, one taught Biology and the other Physics. Now aside from Physics being more technical, The physics teacher graduated from Harvard and the biology teacher from Illinois State University and I couldn't understand the process to get to an answer from the Harvard teacher. I end up liking both of them (strangely very silimar in quirky, weird personalities), just wanted to state that if their approach at teaching is any indication to their Alma Mater, then I would choose to go to Illinois State. Currently at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign! #GoBlue....OrangeAndBlue!
happyforeverjoy First off, while I agree with the "Ivy League isn't everything" ideas of your post, I want to point out first: that your "50%" might throw some readers off into believing that it doesn't help with jobs, and second: the student loan fact isn't true, post 2006. While I'm not sure where you got your 50% statistic from, I read a statistic by a Forbes online article that says that the Harvard name is 98% most favored out of other schools from a sample of employers across America. So if your statistic of "50%" is indeed correct, if I was to play Devil's Advocate, according to the sample it would still be more favored than other colleges with employers, meaning it is an edge. 2nd, A BIG MISCONCEPTION about Harvard stated by the Dean of admissions in an admissions interview ON UA-cam by OnHarvardTime (look it up) is that people don't realize Harvard is AFFORDABLE right now thanks to the introduction of greater financial aid packages. If you go on the actual Harvard website yourself it will say that 90% of the need is met for people who can't afford it WITHOUT THE LOANS. Princeton (a school the girl applied to) has a ZERO LOAN POLICY (enacted in 2001), and Yale has a similiar Financial Aid package situation as Harvard at the moment. So does Columbia University thanks to the generous donation of John Kluge. The "Ivies get you in debt Lol so you're not smart in going there Lol" argument is no longer relevant for the top 4 Ivies post 2006. -Columbia transfer student incoming 2015, rejected from Harvard and did a lot of research ahead of time.
Ally Niu, they are!? You wouldn't believe how many people have no idea of UPenn, and try to correct me. Even in medical school, mostly the Ivy kids know and appreciate how well-regarded UPenn is. And whether we like it or not, our president-elect is an alumni... 😭😭
I remember reading about this kid. She's whining because she was rejected? SUCK. IT. UP. The vast majority of everybody got rejected. Don't have enough extracurriculars and activities? SUCK. IT. UP. There's nothing to stop you from joining activities and taking part in extracurriculars. Whine, whine, whine.
she did suck it up, you idiot. with irony and humour. even if i didn't share her opinion, i'd like the way she expressed herself. the american education system is a load of crap. it doesn't select for abilities but money and other random 'features'. why don't you take a look at, say, the swiss model? america sucks.
Here0s0Johnny And I insulted you how? Right off the bat you go calling names. Thanks for making judging your character so simple, and thanks for sharing!
Here0s0Johnny There's no irony and no humour in what she wrote or in her interview. It's one long pity-fest of an essay that stereotypes the people that do get accepted. Her opinion mainly involves people of color as the reason for her failure: she didn't get accepted because either she wasn't a person of color or didn't use the "misfortunes" of a child in Africa. You want a good example of irony? Here she is complaining about not getting in because she doesn't bring diversity and that she doesn't have Navajo, Pacific Islander, or Cherokee blood. She laments that she wasn't born into an Asian family with a "tiger" mom. Guess what? Diversity or not, almost all of these campuses are ~50% white, so based on demographics she had a much better chance of getting in than any person of color.
Here0s0Johnny It all boils down to the fact that she doesn't deserve to get accepted because she wasn't honest. She did all of these activities and volunteered not because it was the right cause for the charity or organization, but because she only wanted to get into an Ivy league college. You should volunteer because altruistically it's a cause you believe in and getting into these schools would be a bonus. Her intentions were hollow and superficial, that's why she's so bitter.
I disagree actually. As a soon-to-be college graduate, I would definitely do things differently in HS as well just to make my track record look better. In our capitalistic society, who actually does things because they really want to? No they do it because it's required to get to the next level. She's right when she says college a business model. She is very well spoken and seems bright and while I don't in the least bit feel bad for her (lol), I do understand where she is coming from. She'll be just fine in life.
lol this is a quick reply, but no we took the actual SATs with juniors. The average SAT score is a 1500 yes, but the average SAT score for IVY league schools is like 2300s. So yes a 2120 is great, but for what she wanted it isn't.
Gus Fring Tbh, once you reach 700+ in each section, it doesn't really matter anymore unless your trying to go to MIT or Cal Tech where writing and reading scores are lower and math scores are higher. I've had a friend get into Columbia with a 1950, and she was white with no special circumstances. I have a few friends at these schools and they just had good grades and 1 or 2 leadership positions in clubs. No one really knows what these schools look for.
I live in the Bay Area. It's pretty much a consensus that a 2300+ is required to even be considered for an Ivy League or a school like Berkeley or Stanford.
I am on mobile and cannot reply to jewlz, But I wanted to say that some schools have programs such as John Hopkins where middle schoolers can take the SATs not PSATs
I got rejected from my dream school, I didn't bitch about I just when to a state school where I am perfectly content with myself. Although I do sympathize with this girl at some points, she comes off as entitled and doesn't react to failure well. I didn't get into an Ivy either but I didn't put blame on anyone other than myself. How will she get into an Ivy league school if she can't even show she's mature enough to handle failure. I am a kid younger than her and I have to say this isn't the truth. 46% of Harvard student are white; every other race combines to form the rest. She didn't get in because it was her fault she didn't try as hard as the student who got 2400 and started 5 clubs. I just can't stand it when people bitching about this shit its not unfair its completely fair.
This girl needs to know that Ivy League schools are nearly impossible to get in to, regardless of how good your grades are. Only the lucky ones get accepted.
When they first started listing this girl's credentials and hard work and stated how she was still rejected from her dream college, I felt sorry for her. Once she actually opened her mouth, I stopped...
The UnorthodoxTutor You mean Oxford University in the UK? That has an entirely different application system and doesn't require SAT. Your friend must have done well on their own entrance tests and interviews
girl, no wonder Harvard didn't accept her she did exactly what 90% of applicants do, it's her fault she didn't make herself stand out in her application.
She's totally being rewarded for being rude and sarcastic -.- People are rejected everyday..she cries about it. Someone was obviously spoilt and given everything as a child..anyone else picturing not being well liked in her high school...?
Yea i guess she didnt expect to see the day when she would get rejected by a "prestigious" college.....spoiled, entitled brat....well now she should know why she got rejected...
If I had a moment with this girl I would say to her: "From practically everyone, not just white people: Please stop acting so entitled. You claim your article to be satirical despite its clear statements of bigotry, entitlement and slurs. Your piece was offensive and a waste of time. Oh no!! Racial diversity has stopped you from going to a great school! Too bad you got accepted to another amazing school. Darn. What a bummer." Suck it up kid. I'm not saying me personally, but there are millions of people who are struggling to merely SURVIVE and you want to waste your time and everyone's time on how unfair your life is. Make yourself a bit more useful and go on the Today Show with something more useful and practical.
Tori Harding totally agree with you! The diversity card still applies nowadays but it's severely limited and in fact for people of Asian background it's harder to get into good colleges and graduate schools, most likely due to the influx of (kinda stereotypical, but I apply and so do most asians) overachieving Asian students. *Sighs* if only this was a perfect world where race and sexual orientation didn't matter as much as it does.
That gpa means nothing ( absolutely inflated I guarantee you) and your sat score is not good enough for Ivy leagues. You need at least 2250+, ideally 2300+
I'm not sure how this is news but the reason she got rejected is that she got a 2120 on her SAT and a competitive score for the Ivy League is 2250+. I get that sometimes the college admissions process is sometimes bullshit (Mostly because it causes students to try and get as many EC's as possible regardless of whether or not the EC's actually interest them.) but the reason this girl didn't get in is that better people applied.
College admissions officers are really good at knowing the type of person you are through your essays. Her essays probably showed just how shit and entitled of a person she is. I don’t think these officers are rethinking their decision on rejected her any time soon.
Honestly, she got rejected because she was unlucky. Her stats make her like any other smart and qualified ivy league applicant and being qualified gives you maybe a 10% chance of acceptance. You can't be mad because you didn't get into an ivy league or similarly competitive school. The college process is so absolutely ridiculous and making a big stink about it won't solve anything, it's most literally a crap shot. I just finished the college process and I saw kids get into ivies that I never thought would in a million years (who weren't super diverse child prodigies) and people who were ridiculously over qualified get rejected. Even saw some of that weirdness with myself. Also as a minority I get really angry when people talk about how people get into schools because of diversity. Fuck you, I got into my colleges because my stats were higher than the averages for those schools and I do lots of extra circulars, and I also got rejected from schools that I was very well qualified for, maybe even overqualified.
Extracurriculars and SAT are way more important than GPA. Highschools handout As just for turning shit in. The only time highschool get's slightly serious is when you take college courses.
curryeater259 to a decent university. Anyways, im saying regular highschool classes hand out As but if you are taking APs or college credit courses, then that can be another story.
Not necessarily. The colleges in our state often profile the high schools to see how easy they give out a's based on other people from said high school that were accepted to the college and how well they did.
Ya like i said, having a 4.5 gpa doesnt mean much especially when it's from an easy school, and rofl, i know some schools offer 5.0s too, the kids with 5.0s should be accepted to university on planet mars for the gifted and talented. The whole over 4.0+ system is retarded and doesn't make sense.
Colleges didn’t lie to her, she just didn’t listen to what they had to say. Ivy League and other top schools are very up front about the fact that you have a greater than 90% chance of being rejected and that nearly every applicant has near-perfect SATs and GPA, has an impressive sounding internship, did a lot of community service, etc. Colleges care about the kind of person you are as well as the kind of student you are, and based on the incredibly pretentious tone of everything she said in this video, I can’t imagine admissions offices liked the kind of person she presented herself as.
Thing is. she has a point. There's too much politics in the school admissions - they always try and admit people who make the school look better, OR who can potentially get donates. But yeah, she really should have just gone to another school if that was the case. You're not the only girl who studied her whole life to get into an Ivy League school only to watch a donator's child who dropped out of school and got a GED get in with a full ride scholarship.
She probably wrote a whiney personal statement that was super basic to go with her super basic major (if you apply for a major that is less competitive, you will be more likely to get in!) I will give you a hint when it comes to school guys- write a bomb ass personal statement. Seriously, go out of the water. Go fucking crazy. Don't talk about your "experience in student leadership" hell no, write about your family problems, your personal problems, and tailor it to where it is unique to you. Really go all out! And of course edit, edit, edit! It has to be readable and grammatically correct. I heard about a guy talking about how much he loved some sort of food and got in. I personally did the "25 facts about me" last minute, and then did a more serious one of the language barrier between my mother and I as she only speaks Arabic and I only speak English for the most part. I ended up getting accepted to the two out of the three universities that I applied to, and I'm pretty sure the one that I didn't get into was because I majored in film, which required samples and a whole other application, which I did not do. And the whole diversity thing is crap- I have friends who have the same race and some got in while others didn't, and both had really good qualifications. These people where the top of their class, Hispanic, and yes they still didn't get into their dream school. It happens.
I agree to the comments below...."Killer" SAT score? come on 2120 and 4.5 GPA...is not enough...our valedictorian got a 2360 and she had a 5.0 GPA...she got rejected to alot of Ivy's and only got into Dartmouth.....she should really look at the "average" SAT score for those Ivy schools. 2120 isn't going to cut it.
Just because you have the paperwork, doesn't guarantee anything in life. Jobs... anything. Life is about playing the right cards and if you don't get something, boo fucking hoo. Keep working at it.
She said it herself:" I poured my whole life for the past five years into these college applications." Colleges want to see that you have a life outside of academics. They want to know you actually care about something other than getting into an Ivy League school.
If her GPA and SAT scores were actually that great then her complaint would have made more sense...But come on, expecting to get into an Ivy League with a 2120? and Princeton and Yale at that? Even if she were to have a 2400 and unweighted GPA of 4.0, the chances of getting into an Ivy League would still be extremely slim. Just look at the acceptance rates. I think her ego is way too large for her actual capabilities...
As a current high school senior, my first reaction when I saw her grades was "What?! This girl has a 2120 and expects to get into Princeton?" I have SAT scores more than 100 points north of hers, a very similar GPA (though I attend a public high school, so mine is out of 5.0) and I still do not expect, or even think it is likely, that I will get into the Ivy League schools to which I have applied. Somewhere along the way, Suzie Weiss seems to have gotten the impression that she was special and never realized how brutally competitive and random the whole process is. Also, the fact that she talks about "starting a fake charity" tells me that she doesn't understand what colleges are looking for, which is genuine interest and passion, not faked and unenthusiastic BSing.
This has nothing to do with GPA's or this girl's college issues. This is a young precocious teenager trying to be funny, witty and clever, and she's not coming across that way. She looks like a very young girl trying to be something she is not, and this is awkward and uncomfortable to watch. She tried to turn this college rejection experience into a funny, comedy piece, and she's not quite pulling it off. It is very cringe-worthy.
So entitled. Her SAT score isn't even that good for Ivy league schools. There was an indian guy at my school who interned with UC Berkeley professors 2 years in a row, made top 40 finalists at the Intel science fair, 4.8 gpa, 2320 SAT, and he got deferred from Stanford early. The point is your stats and extra curriculars may be perfect like this kid but from the perspective of the wrong reader you may still come off as a bad fit for their school.
she has some good points. diversity is fine, but the holistic approach argument is spot on. most private universities are self-interested and want what's going to be good for them. regardless, she seems like the kind of person i would want to slap after speaking to her for a minute; she comes across to me as having no humility.
Because she's a immature little shit whose response to is to write a bitchy article when her mediocre accomplishments don't get her into the Ivy League.
She is so smart that she just bashed all top universities publicly, and now has no chance of ever being accepted, which is obviously the only thing that she cares about. Yeah, smart move, genius.
Girl I really hope in the 5 years since this that you've grown. I feel that pain of not getting in but believe me that for many of us we do see ourselves as great compared to others. However I know that a big chunk of it is our perspectives. Really the chance we get of universities is insane especially for some of us that our parents dont even have it. But hey love the comedy of it and I get the anger lol. Hope you are great
Her comment about "[scooping] up some suffering child" in Africa was vain and disgusting. Just proves that she didn't deserve to attend any of the schools she applied to, especially after admitting that she only did it because the idea of going was "sexy". I applaud each school that rejected her for seeing through the facade.
I had a 4.8 GPA, a 2230 on the SAT, tons of volunteer hours, extra curricular activies, leadership positions and I did not get into many of the Ivy Leagues I applied to. It´s disappointing to work so hard and sacrifice so much just to be rejected. I understand good grades and test scores are not the only thing these universities look at, but it´s sad that so many people are being judge on their lack of diversity. Diversity is wonderful, but it should not be forced.
Gpa means nothing without scale, comparison to students in same school ( to see how inflated grades are) and most importantly, the classss you actually took( for example: AP chemistry is significantly more rigorous than AP Statistics)
Well I am number two in my class and have taken 17 AP classes and passed every single AP exam with 4s and mainly 5s. My classes have been very rigorous and I would say my GPA is much higher compared to those in my school and around my school. I know GPA means nothing, but It is a component of the applications
you said "i didnt get into many of the ivy leagues I applied to", thus implying you did get into at least one ivy? if so then please stop complaining. You should be pleased.
kgv1997km3000 Oh no. My daughter is number 2 out of 550+ students and has taken 15 AP and college classes and passed them with 4s and 5s. She has a 33 ACT that she is trying to raise to 34. She leads 3 extra curricular activities and is involved in many more. She sounds just like you.
lol if your daughter doesnt have all 5s shes probably not good enough for ivy league. AP exams are really easy with the curves. most exams require only 66 percent to get a 5. In my school, thats one percent away from an F.
4.5 and shes mad? The valedictorian of my school had a 4.7 gpa (record breaking gpa in my school's history), 2200 sats, took precalc in freshmen year...and not to mention, the lead for all of the school's drama productions. she was astounding brilliant and all the teachers agreed. but she got rejected from yale, harvard, stanford, and more. the only ivy that accepted her was Princeton. the girl is just mad about her results and was delusional in her status.
A 2120 SAT score is really high, but not for the ivy leagues. Especially as a white girl with hardly any distinguishing factors, that isn't good enough when the average score is 2260 at Harvard. She's smart, but not smart enough to feel entitled to getting into the world's best universities.
It's interesting that the poll they show about 30% agreeing with her is similar in percentage to the % of thumbs ups the video received haha. I agree with some parts of what the girl said, but overall think she's just being entitled. Her grades, GPA, and extracurriculars are great, but not nearly the caliber needed to get into those Ivy League schools. I know a ton of people with 2300+ scores who didn't get in. At that level, it's pretty much a lottery (though I don't think her grades and scores were high enough to even enter that lottery).
Honestly... America's obsession with "diversity" is bs. Socioeconomic situation has a much greater impact on how you do in school and how many opportunities you have in life. You can be a black tri-gendered pansexual and still be a privileged as hell rich snobby kid... If you're born in a poor family with limited access to culture and no chance to go to a private school you're going to be in disadvantage, doesn't matter what your ethnicity is (obviously, in this situation, people of colour are always going to be more disadvantaged than white ppl). The problem is your idea of "diversity" is a bunch of rich privileged kids of all colours and sexual orientations...If you want proof this isn't working, compare' US's equality index to that of most european countries... Your social justice system sucks. With that said, this girl in the video just seems bitter she wasn't accepted, and now wants to blame everyone but herself.
She's the cutest little pixy with the sharpest tongue ever. I can't believe that she mocked charity work as if it is only really something that people do to pad their resume and it is absurd to think that there are any actual, legitimate caring people in charity work. She says it is a parody, but who is it a parody of? If anything, it seems to be a parody of a privileged child, truly undeserving of such privilege, who experiences a bit less privilege for the first time and then has a grand mal tantrum. Such cynical parody has a danger of bringing out the worst in people when they happen to be cynical themselves and take the parody as validation for their cynicism.
Dude she wasn't mocking the charity work, she was just pointing out the fact that she would have had to do that by going to such ridiculous extremes in order to get into those big universities
Richard Meek If you take her words as actually criticizing the level of accomplishment needed to get into those big universities, then yes, I think she did mock the motive to do charity work. In that case, I think that she mocked the motive to do charity work as a means to also mock what you call "ridiculous extremes." However, if you interpret her words as a parody of a privileged child throwing a tantrum over experiencing a little less privilege (as I previously mentioned that I thought was a possibility), then I think that the mocking statements toward the motivation to do charity were actually only mocking the lengths that the privileged child throwing a tantrum would go to to rationalize that meeting the high standards of those big universities is not actually commendable. That being said, characterizing the good work of charities and people's other extracurricular activities that qualify them for those big universities as "ridiculous extremes" is the type of cynicism that I was concerned that this parody would bolster as if being the most accomplished of the most accomplished is ridiculous. Many people get by in life by doing the minimum- by just barely clearing the low bar. However, when you or a loved one really need a brain surgeon, lawyer or some such expert, you'll be glad that at least some value challenging themselves way beyond clearing the low bar all the way up to what you characterize as "ridiculous extremes." Full disclosure- I'm not one that has accomplished those "ridiculous extremes" as you call them for various reasons, but I do appreciate those who have that ability and actually become the most accomplished of the most accomplished, and I won't say that there is anything ridiculous about that.
you can be valevictorian and still not get into harvard... i know this person who got into harvard by having 3 IB classes, SAT over 2300, ACT somewhere in the top 5%, SAT II all subjects, with 3 world languages, GPA of 3.95, 6 volunteer club, editorial chief, 8 AP courses completed, and got into harvard...
Im glad someone has at least heard of IB classes. Harder than most classes I took in college and with a much larger workload. Aaaand I got almost no credit for them. 4 semester history class gives 3 credit hours. What a lovely waste of my time.
punkfan09 im in IB right now. this is my last year of the myp program and it's a load of bullshit! I havent had time to start my personal project because of the CAS hours i have to get, im in civics and economics, algebra II, english II, accounting (for business credit), physics, chemistry (which i've been told is crazy to take at the same time but i had no choice!), acoustic guitar (for my art credit), and spanish III. I hate IB. i have no time for anything anymore and im failing some classes. the thing that sucks the most is that, my class is stuck in the middle of curriculum changes so we get all the shitty classes at once, and my school decided to go back to A-day B-day schedule. Im really regretting staying in IB.
lol, this is the reason she didn't go. doesnt realize that everyone that applies is top notch. also, 4.5 isnt that impressive. also 2100 sat isnt that impressive either it would make senes if she was accepted, and if she was rejected. but her anger doesnt make sense, any one with her credebility could be rejected. also, she is arrogant. some people actually do a lot in highschool, not all are fake. maybe if she participated she would know.
I'm confused. When I was in high school (over a decade ago,) the maximum GPA possible was 4.0 and the maximum SAT score possible was 1600. What's changed?
MetrognomeVideos In AP classes if you get an A you get a 5 instead of a 4 like a regular class. There are 3 parts of the SAT now, each worth 800. So a 4.5 is amazing. Valedictorian worthy.
MetrognomeVideos The maximum GPA is indeed 4.0, if you are using an unweighted GPA scale. However, high schools offer AP classes and honor classes, which are more rigorous than regular classes. So Colleges/Universities typically use a WEIGHTED GPA scale, meaning you get extra points for a good grade in harder classes. Ex. (an "A" grade for an AP class would equal to 5 points while an "A" in a normal class would be just 4 points).
MetrognomeVideos SAT is out of 2400 now, and many schools offer weighted classes where an A is a 5.0 and a B is a 4.0 etc, my school's valedictorian had like a 4.8 GPA.
The reason she got rejected isn't because she is "too boring" it's because these schools exist to be exclusive. They are only prestigious because they are the oldest, have high rejection rates, and cater to wealthy elites. I think what holds her op-ed back, was making a criticism of these ridiculous application qualifications, and instead should have focused on why these institutions don't need to be so exclusive, and how that ultimately holds academia back. edited for spelling.
She didn't get in because she did nothing special. Getting good grades and high sat scores is EXPECTED when you apply to an ivy league, they want something that separates you from the crowd, something that makes you worth accepting.
ChapterSee It's not a sure way to get in.
Your daughter clearly didn't stand out enough.
You know lots of kids apply that have excellent writing skills and rewards...they need more in writing than just that.
this is the whitest thing i've ever heard
That moment when white privilege didn't work out on college admissions LMAO.
she's just saying that black students have a higher likely hood of getting into ivy league colleges, it's actually hardest for Asian students.

The fact that she placed blame on everyone else except for herself is very telling of her personality. Her essays were probably pretentious as hell
she was trying to joke, a lot of people saw it as her being extremely whiny but she was speaking up for a ton of people in a satire, comedic way.
Sounds like hillary doesnt it
chello Yeah, she sounds entitled and wants to blame a whole race for her not entering as if she is better then everyone else.
It’s usually this way w people who focus on this things n this is all they have.small circle w barely any friends n high grades n their parents pushing them n they have no social life
There are a lot of people who do almost everything in their hands to get in
If her application essays were as pretentious and privileged sounding as her interview here sounds, I don't blame the ivy leagues for rejecting her. When will applicants realize that admissions officers (especially Ivy League ones) can sniff out a whiny and entitled brat from a mile away?
yeah exactly. her idiocy and entitlement makes it hard to ACTUALLY criticize the ridiculous college practices
Well if you've spent enough time at some of these ivy leagues you would realize they need a better sense of smell.
well you dont know how hard she has worked. stop calling her a brat. she has a bright future either ways.
First of all, how does some high school kid get their glorified facebook rant posted to wallstreet journal?
they decided that it captured some anti-affirmative action zeitgeist and that it'd be more compelling if that sentiment came from a kid. not surprising as the wsj has long been a bastion of whiteness. that being said you're right, we should still remember she's a kid....it's the media's fault for blowing this out of proportion
ubermensch826 lol this idiotic post

I'm just lucky I have the opportunity to go to college.

like ivy league schools are very difficult to get into. maybe you should've worked harder
Sham k
she got a 4.5 GPA -.-
Jonathan Gooby gpa is a major part of what they look at but absolutely not the ONLY part.
GPA is tough to compare. She might have a 4.5 weighted, however, unweighted it may be 3.7.... which suddenly doesn't look so hot.
She has such an overbearing personality it seems like. Talking to her for to long would probably make me want to jump off a cliff.

With an intelligence and sarcastic attitude like that she don’t need college. 😁
@@rayva1 Agreed, screw Harvard... This girl is amazing.
Her "Satire" is probably the reason she was rejected.
However, she was rejected, thus prompting her to write the satire.
Otaku Madness Indeed but she did have to write some sort of essay for those schools and she could have added "satire" to those essays.
Otaku Madness
No what I am saying is she most likely put that "satire" in her essay and that's why the colleges rejected her cause either, A: The didn't catch the satire and thought she was being a bitch or B: They caught the satire and were not amused with it.
She is not ivy league material. No college wants someone that whines and complains when they dont get accepted.and her personality is cringy
Meh, this happens once every few years. Some white person gets upset that they don't get into an ivy league.
LOLLLLOL dude hahahahahahhahahaha
Wow that is racist
Truth.
That's the difference between whites and blacks. Whites work their asses off, and you might hear one or two bitch that they're not accepted every few YEARS. Blacks on the other hand don't do shit, yet you hear them bitch every few SECONDS that they're not accepted.
who do you know bitching about not being accepted? shut yo dumb ass up.
she's so annoying. honestly, just go to school and get your degree because in the end, the degree you get is what's most important. going to an ivy doesn't mean you'll be more successful than people who don't. it's your degree that gets you the job.. stop whining about not getting into "top schools" that just have a lot of name recognition and go to a school, make the most of it, and graduate.
Hm...I really hope you're not implying the humanities are useless.
2120, seriously?!? Wow, this woman has way too high self entitlement! Harvard average is 2275. Do some research!!
Matt Sezer from where I see it shes not criticising the students applying but the system thats in place that causes people to build up these resumes only because they want to get in and the fact that a lot of it attributes to stuff they cant control rather than a high scoring student.
well she ruined her chances of getting into a good sorority. No one will want her
Clearly it's eveyone else's fault except hers.
2120 SAT? lol that's terrible compared to everyone else in competitive colleges.

Okay, I'll change "everyone" with "most people". Happy now? Most people at least have 2250+. Your sister must have been very well accomplished in other areas.
I mean it also matters what kind of high school you go to.
That's not terrible, that's average.

***** well good for him!
4.0 isnt ivy league, thats the average for UC Santa Cruz this past year, ivy league is closer to a 4.8-5.0 including extra curiculars
iam plant he said UNWEIGHTED. the unweighted gpa scale only goes up to a 4.0
She knew what it took to get into an Ivy, didn't do any of it, and is now pissed because she didn't get in?
right!,
You missed the entire point of her gripe. She (among many others) is concerned that these elite schools are overvaluing characteristics that students cannot control…

I was kind of agreeing with her until the “I would have gladly worn a headdress to school.” It felt like she assumed that a minority could get into a college simply because of being a minority, when there are people of all ethnicities that get into good colleges and deserved it.
@@hicrhodushicsalta4382 and have good grades
Oh I know you know that an under qualified minority can get a spot when a more deserving student can’t for the sin of being born a Caucasian.
Statistically speaking a minority is more likely to get accepted compared to a white person with the same grades.
She's saying that with her grades and accomplishments, if she wore a headdress, she would have been admitted. Wearing a headdress should not make the difference maker.
Well, we could look at Senator Warren…

SpryO3 Some schools care about diversity and will deliberately seek out students of other cultures. In some places non-whites may also qualify for affirmative action-based considerations. Although I'm not sure heikiu96z meant it that way. While we're on that topic, boosting gpa's is stupid (if this isn't a boosted gpa then you're stupid for using the 5 scale gpa.), and there's nothing impressive about it.
*****
The girl from this video used the 5 scale, that's why i used it too to compare.
Once you graduate start a business, invest in stocks, invest in real estate, and BAM $$$ comes in just like that.
she is so pretentious lmao
Smh.
Thank you, as a senior who got rejected by an Ivy League recently, this makes me feel much better.

This can't be more true, thank you for commenting.
Penn state and upenn are two different universities...
Here0s0Johnny
There's no irony and no humour in what she wrote or in her interview.
Here0s0Johnny
It all boils down to the fact that she doesn't deserve to get accepted because she wasn't honest.
2120 is not impressive, not at all, my friend took the sat in 8th grade(last year) and got a 2150, you're not getting anywhere with this
lol this is a quick reply, but no we took the actual SATs with juniors.
Malik Abel
A kid at my school got a 800 on the math section.... and was rejected at MIT. I'm still waiting on my Berkeley acceptance/rejection though.
I am on mobile and cannot reply to jewlz,
But I wanted to say that some schools have programs such as John Hopkins where middle schoolers can take the SATs not PSATs
lol she mad
7 years and nobody replied hello
Lmao
Mad cuz bad
That's what she's talking about. Unrealistic standards
Ah, she did not get into Princeton and Yale? Go cry me a river.
When they first started listing this girl's credentials and hard work and stated how she was still rejected from her dream college, I felt sorry for her. Once she actually opened her mouth, I stopped...
2120 is abysmal for ivies
The UnorthodoxTutor You mean Oxford University in the UK? That has an entirely different application system and doesn't require SAT. Your friend must have done well on their own entrance tests and interviews
girl, no wonder Harvard didn't accept her she did exactly what 90% of applicants do, it's her fault she didn't make herself stand out in her application.
Cry me a fucking river.... she wasn't even that qualified.
"I noticed a long time ago that my parents gave up on parenting me."
bitch no wonder
She's totally being rewarded for being rude and sarcastic -.- People are rejected everyday..she cries about it. Someone was obviously spoilt and given everything as a child..anyone else picturing not being well liked in her high school...?
Yea i guess she didnt expect to see the day when she would get rejected by a "prestigious" college.....spoiled, entitled brat....well now she should know why she got rejected...
If I had a moment with this girl I would say to her:
"From practically everyone, not just white people: Please stop acting so entitled. You claim your article to be satirical despite its clear statements of bigotry, entitlement and slurs. Your piece was offensive and a waste of time. Oh no!! Racial diversity has stopped you from going to a great school! Too bad you got accepted to another amazing school. Darn. What a bummer."
Suck it up kid.
They want the students immigrating from China and other countries that pay the full tuition.
A 2120 is not good enough to ensure that you get into an Ivy League...
yea you need at least a 2250
THIS JUST IN! Young adult learns that life isn't fair!
i thought this was the onion at first lol
,,,ATTITUDE ,,,ATTITUDE,,,ATTITUDE,,,SHE BOMBS HER INTERVIEWS,,,
i dont get it
She's just upset
She may not have gotten into the Ivy league schools, but at least she'll avoid the student loans that come with it! Hahaha
TiggahG ivies have the highest endowment and give best financial aid so no
Honestly, she got rejected because she was unlucky. Fuck you, I got into my colleges because my stats were higher than the averages for those schools and I do lots of extra circulars, and I also got rejected from schools that I was very well qualified for, maybe even overqualified.
she sounds like a troll XD
Extracurriculars and SAT are way more important than GPA. Highschools handout As just for turning shit in. The only time highschool get's slightly serious is when you take college courses.
I have all fucking AP classes man, high school is kicking my ass
***** oh really? What school do you go to?
curryeater259 to a decent university.
Ivys wouldn't wanna be caught dead with a student with a 2120
This girl is the female trump
Oh, way to play that card man. You really got me, good comeback.
Grant Bradshaw More like a whiny future liberal.
the brave wolf awwwwh can tell you’re a butt hurt republican. Temper tantrums are their go to
Grant Bradshaw yeah, but at least Trump got accepted into Penn.
P Ed usually don’t comment... but I’m pretty sure he transferred. And that he only got in bc of his daddy’s connections.
It happens.
pfft.. with those scores? you have to face reality honey.
She got rejected? Welp judging by the video, it looks like they made the right decision
Keep working at it.
she says it was a joke but it seems like shes taking this way too seriously.
I have heard about people even with a prefect SAT score of 2400/2400 REJECTED! Their are more factors involved than test scores!
What an entitled brat. Ivy Leagues don't owe you anything.
I do not understand why most of you people are showing such hate and disliking towards this smart, beautiful, young woman.
Because she's a immature little shit whose response to is to write a bitchy article when her mediocre accomplishments don't get her into the Ivy League.
ComboLeafster She is probably more intelligent than your entire family put together.
Who the fuck are you to judge anyone?
douknoukem ballsofsteel AMEN! :D THANK YOU!
She is so smart that she just bashed all top universities publicly, and now has no chance of ever being accepted, which is obviously the only thing that she cares about. Yeah, smart move, genius.
With low scores like that on the sat no wonder she didn't get in. She needs minimum 2300
Hope you are great
I'm one of the 17%.
Congratuations!
Max Cutting
Thank you.
yay! that's amazing!
Jenn X
And what percentage are you may I ask?
wesley ogilvie
lol I'm not from the states so I never took the SAT. :P
Please God, do not give me a daughter like her
4.5 and shes mad?
Future Ann Coulter
i cnt belive harvird rejectid me!!! idk y but i so mad!!! dis is not farir
I doubt an intelligent young woman with an extremely high GPA and SAT score writes like that. Nice try.
Lisa Andrews chilll da fuk out, its meeee dis not mean im no intellegent
Black Mage WTF do you expect when they accept only 5 applications out of 100. You think Harvard accepts everyone who expects to get accepted?
What an insanely unlikable person. A little humility goes a long way.
2120 isn't that good compared to the scores of those accepted into Ivy League schools actually.
She almost sounded like Donald Trump LOL
Didn't Obama say "Me or I" over 50 times in one speech?..🤔
LOL. Yeah and Brett Kavangh saying "I got in Yale with no connections" meanwhile he went to prep school and his mother was a judge.
At that level, it's pretty much a lottery (though I don't think her grades and scores were high enough to even enter that lottery).
when you get a 2120 and you think that's an excellent SAT score lmao
A 2120 isn't good enough for Princeton and Yale...
No basically she's butthurt for not getting in?
She’s the smart version of the “how bout dat” girl
The problem is that we for some reason want children to be extremely responsible for them selves when they are actually not capable to be that.
Richard Meek
If you take her words as actually criticizing the level of accomplishment needed to get into those big universities, then yes, I think she did mock the motive to do charity work. In that case, I think that she mocked the motive to do charity work as a means to also mock what you call "ridiculous extremes."
However, if you interpret her words as a parody of a privileged child throwing a tantrum over experiencing a little less privilege (as I previously mentioned that I thought was a possibility), then I think that the mocking statements toward the motivation to do charity were actually only mocking the lengths that the privileged child throwing a tantrum would go to to rationalize that meeting the high standards of those big universities is not actually commendable.
However, when you or a loved one really need a brain surgeon, lawyer or some such expert, you'll be glad that at least some value challenging themselves way beyond clearing the low bar all the way up to what you characterize as "ridiculous extremes."
Full disclosure- I'm not one that has accomplished those "ridiculous extremes" as you call them for various reasons, but I do appreciate those who have that ability and actually become the most accomplished of the most accomplished, and I won't say that there is anything ridiculous about that.
The colleges rejected her probably breath in relief after hearing her interview because they made the right decision to reject her
how the hell is 2120 an excellent SAT score? NCAA athletes need that to go to college.
2120 is not that good! I got 2200 and I'm not even going to touch the ivy league. WTF?
you can be valevictorian and still not get into harvard... i know this person who got into harvard by having 3 IB classes, SAT over 2300, ACT somewhere in the top 5%, SAT II all subjects, with 3 world languages, GPA of 3.95, 6 volunteer club, editorial chief, 8 AP courses completed, and got into harvard...
"valevictorian." Well, here's another one that won't be getting in...anywhere.
Kona jinx its a typo man, chill.
Kona jinx HAHA HILARIOUS I NEVER KNEW GRAMMAR ERRORS COULD BE SO FUNNY!!! Heres another one-. What college did you attend?
Im really regretting staying in IB.
lol, this is the reason she didn't go. doesnt realize that everyone that applies is top notch.
also, 4.5 isnt that impressive.
also 2100 sat isnt that impressive either
it would make senes if she was accepted, and if she was rejected.
but her anger doesnt make sense, any one with her credebility could be rejected.
also, she is arrogant. some people actually do a lot in highschool, not all are fake. maybe if she participated she would know.
MetrognomeVideos SAT is out of 2400 now, and many schools offer weighted classes where an A is a 5.0 and a B is a 4.0 etc, my school's valedictorian had like a 4.8 GPA.
falcon00009 exactly,
The reason she got rejected isn't because she is "too boring" it's because these schools exist to be exclusive.
