Named after the patron saint of the poor and the homeless, St. Benedict Joseph Labre church is in a neighborhood with an historical past. A number of notable people have lived in this neighborhood over the years and a popular radio station began here in 1929 that remains on the air to this day.

During the late 1960's we had so many people attending mass at SBJL, the church masses were full. To handle the crowds there were masses held simultaneously in the school gym. I remember going to those masses in the gym with my family. Some of the masses also had folk music and those were my favorite. After the mass, the priest would announce there was coffee and doughnuts in the cafeteria and all were welcome. Perhaps this is why the original church crucifix over the alter was moved/hanging in the gym.

Nice channel and beautiful church. By the way, to celebrate the Tridentine 'latin mass' would allow Germans, Irishes, Spanishes and other to worship together as one flock (Galatians, 3.28: 'There is neither Jew nor Greek...).
