    Narada, I wish you had a shop in the VA/DC area. I've been natural since 1997, and no stylist has touched my hair since then. You're the only one I've come across in all these years that would even make me consider sitting in a stylist's chair again.

    I used to get severe split ends more when I got box braids with synthetic hair and when I stopped and started just braiding and twisting my hair without added hair I noticed my ends weren’t as dry and shredded and I I’ve seen more hair growth. Im no hair expert by any means but I feel like some of these protective styles are actually detrimental for some especially people with hair like mine, which is super super fine (the individual strands are fine)

    Great video as always. I'm so glad you are addressing this issue of modern day braiders putting their clients' hair in a state of perpetual dryness. I remember when I used to get individual braids back in the 90's, and I do not recall the hair stylists braiding my hair after excessively blow drying my hair; some didn't do that at all. You would come with your hair washed and dried overnight. Some hair braiders preferred the grip of the non blown out hair. Also, I remember they would just part the hair and braid it without using any jams or gels. At the end of braiding the hair, some of them would grease or oil the scalp and that was it. Also, we used a lot of braid spray. I used a lot of braid spray almost every other day on my hair so it grew like a weed in those braids. To me, that was the key to wearing braids. Making sure they were constantly moisturized and had that sheen.

      I do believe that dipping your ends into boiling water will boil them especially if it is dipped over and over again. It's probably ok to dip the synthetic hair but paying closer attention to the ends of your natural hair is key. If any thing is dipped into boiling water it will change it. 🤷‍♀️ It happened to me, 90% I was curly, 2% straight and 8% crochet, and one time braids from a African braider. After that visit I had about 2.5- 3in of damaged dry splits.

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  Рік тому +14

      @@MsLuvlee30 i believe the split ends come from dryness and lack of moisturizing when installing braids. Yall get your hair braided blown out, dried out and never is any moisture infused during the styling process. Then you leave it in the braids for weeks often without any water. I've worn my hair in twists and braids and dipped my hair and actually would let it sit in the boiled water for 30 secs. I have never had issues with split ends in my hair from doing so but i always use moisturizing products to install my twists and moisturized while it was in the style.

Sometimes people need a break or don’t have time (maybe even patience) to do their own hair every week/week and a half. Wigs & protective styles can be freeing from some, especially if you don’t want to do something low maintenance but somewhat permanent like getting locs. Some people with physical or mental health conditions may not always be able to do their hair. Or pay for someone to upkeep it. It’s an option and it’s okay to provide suggestions since not everyone is the same or has the same lifestyle.

    My hair has been loc’d for almost 20 years . When I used to get my hair braided not one braided ever stretched my hair before braiding. That’s crazy that branders are now wanting hair blown out first.
    When I dealt with excessive split ends prior to locs, the answer was to wash twice of week instead of once per week. When my hair was braided I would spritz my hair with a Wet n Wild product. It was a clear watery gel. Don’t recall the name of it but it kept my hair moist. Plus almost all braiders back then would add Lusters Pink Lotion to my hair as it was braided.

      2nd check with your primary care physician and get a full blood panel iron vitamins minerals hormones etc checked
      3rd how's your diet? Do you drink enough water are you getting enough protein do you take vitamins.

      Just water and oil or a leave in braids spray. Keep it light and simple

    Could it be when she does protective styling that requires dipping hair in hot water and it touches her hair?

      No she wears a lot of crochet styles. I've dipped my hair in hot water and never had it damage my hair.

      @AfrikanHairGod good to know, thank you. I always thought that the hot water causes damage to the hair.

    What causes split ends on natural hair?

    • @AfrikanHairGod
      @AfrikanHairGod  11 місяців тому +1

      The same thing that causes split ends on any other hair. Heat, lack of moisture, mechanical damage, over processing hair, etc.

      @@AfrikanHairGod Strange I never had split ends when relaxed.
      I’ve been natural for 8 years. My hair is naturally high porosity and hard to maintain moisture. The dryness has to be the culprit for split ends.
      But looks like I found a fix of mixing 1:5 ratio of glycerin:distilled water with a leave-in conditioner and sealing with castor oil. I have been trimming on a regular the whole time.

      @@SJones-kk5lg your hair isn't a standard for hair damage. Everyone's hair is impacted by various forms of stress differently. Everyone doesn't maintain, care, or style their hair the same way. There are so many factors that can configure contribute to hair damage including personal health and wellness. Also are you familiar with what split ends actually are?

      @@AfrikanHairGod From my understanding, split end is when the hair shaft splits from the ends and works upward toward the roots unless it’s cut off before that happens. It can cause thinning and breakage.

      @@SJones-kk5lg that is correct. You would be surprised how many people (especially hair stylists) don't know that. You have to examine hair very closely and assess individual hair strands to be able to see splits. Many people mistakes thinning, breakage, and natural hair tapering at the ends as split ends when i have seen all of those instances but no split ends in the hair
