This short movie was shot in just a couple of nights on the beautiful island of Senja in Northern Norway. It was my first time at Senja, and I really with I had more time to explore this gem!
A lot of people visit the beautiful Lofoten islands, but the less visited island Senja is maybe even more spectacular and untouched. That is, until now. Summer 2020, people had been isolated inside their homes for weeks and months due to the coronavirus situation. Our country more or less shut down completely from March to May. As the stricts policy worked, the virus started to retreat in Norway early summer, but vacations to the rest of Europe was still not possible.
After those months, it seemed like every person in Norway wanted to go outdoors! Everybody went to a sport shop, bought tents and hammocks, and drove north to see everything they've been seeing on Instagram the last few years.
I had been photographing in Lofoten for more than a week, and when I left, the Lofoten islands were so crowded it was almost impossible to book a table at a restaurant, or a bed for the night. The ferry from Andøya to Gryllefjord, Senja, luckily wasn't quite as crowded as the Bodø - Lofoten ferry.
But at the popular Senja location Tungeneset, where the title clip was shot, and particularly at the nearby Ersfjord beach, it was extremely crowded! Lots and lots of people waited in line to visit the newly built, ridiculously expensive golden toilet at Ersfjord. Finding a parking spot was almost impossible.
Photographing time lapse shots is very difficult in situations like this. People seem to be drawn towards big cameras on a tripod. Maybe they think I'm a professional that has found the very best location for a photo? Of course, they want to take their photo from the exact same location, often in front of my camera. I had many attempts before I managed to get a short clip with the midnight sun in front of the wooden walkway at Tungeneset - without dozens of people in the frame. Was lucky to have a short window of a few minutes just as the shadows were aligning with the walkway, and after removing the parts with people in it, it turned out pretty good.
One solution for time lapse photo is to scout for hidden gems where there are no people around. That means you'll probably spend a lot of time hiking and searching for new spots. The other solution which I used more often on this trip, was to start photographinng when others are going to bed. The sun is up all night during summer, and the best light for photography northern norway in mid summer is roughly between 22:00-04:00 in the morning. By photographing during the night, and sleeping during the day, I could get some good spots all by myself, and with the best light.
Hope you like the movie, and feel free to share it!
