This is so awesome. Just stumble upon your video. Very good friend of mine had a model railroad in his garage. His was the Montauk Valley railroad. Did many operating sessions on it. He passed away three years ago, and me and a couple other guys disassembled it for his son. We saved the buildings the rolling stock, locomotives, figures, automobiles, and a bunch of detail stuff. The most sickening thing I ever had to do. All the work he put into it. And it was destroyed. Your layout looks fantastic.

Appreciate the overview! Yet another example that great layouts do not have to be basement sized monsters.

You make me blush, but I appreciate the compliment. I don't know what I would do with a layout that needed five other people to operate!

Thanks for the updated overview. I particularly liked the prototype map information for context. Cheers from Wisconsin!

I've been quietly watching your railroad updates. Think I said ages ago I really like what you've done & still enjoy watching your videos

Seems like the industries are set up in a logical order to maximize enjoyment. That is what it's all about: enjoy all the hard work that you put into the layout!

PS: Indeed several viewers have enjoyed your video of the Meitowax, including my comments about building a Lindbergh tug model.

Thanks for the update! I like following a few room-sized layouts and watching how people utilize that space. I find these more interesting (certainly easier to follow) than the large layouts. After many years I'm planning to finally start a home layout after leaving a club, and might just start with a small switching layout just to get something running. Maybe 2 or 3 to experiment with different ideas before deciding what to expand.

That is a great idea. I got back into the hobby after a visit to Steamtown in Scranton, PA. I built a shelf layout from all my old track and stuff leftover from when I was young. That showed me the way to go.

Thanks for sharing Grant. Fascinating to have your interpretation explained in such detail along with the map illustration.I have gone from no knowledge of railways in the New York area to a wider understanding of the geography & rail/boat operations in the region. Will deffo seek out more information as a result of your videos.

Even if you take some modeling license, your layout is very inspiring, thank you for the explanation, its more easy to follow when doing switching.

My first rule of model railroading is it has to be fun. I agree with you about not being prototypical. As long as it makes sense and looks good I'm happy. I love cranes and boats as well. I'm working on my commercial fishing fleet. Nice layout, I love it.

I enjoy watching your videos on the Montauk Branch. I like the gritty industrial look and while you follow the prototype you also include structures and details just because you like the way they look. Great modelling skills.

New sub . Very nice layout and use of space. It's got that feeling of the area. My friend Heath Human[c]ity Junction is going down a similar path as you. Cheers from Australia Les

A great addaptation of the prototype. I think i should have made a large switching layout but i didn't and im not changing now.( Too old) .
You didn't mention all the building and truck lights you have ,very well done .
Im mideling the Toledo Peoria and Western. Rins through Ill. and Ind.. To avoid explaining everything that's not quite exact , I modeled the part of the railroad that they never built. They stopped at Logansport Ind. I model from there to Toledo. I also have a fictitious railroad that runs parallel to the TP&W so in 1983 when the real TP&W BASICALLY stopped running it's full length , my TP&W merged with The Oak Valley and Western . This gives me access to all industeries . Really a long story.
Anyway, some how I got 6" by 7feet of water so I could have a tug. I love them also.

I should say "You're never too old" but I won't because it's only people that aren't old that say it.

Hi, you have a nice small room sized layout. I also like trains, water, and tug boats. You like barges and tugs, I like ships and tugs. I'm going to be attempting to build a modern day docks that include a container port, automobile unloading, grain export, oil or ethanol fuels, general freight, 2 military divisions, and maybe a sand/rock facility. All dealing with water/ship unloading/loading to train or truck trailers loading. It will also include a separate container yard with trailer loading, a train yard, and a small loco service area. More modern being set in today's time frame, but being protolanced, using KCS, MoPac, BNSF, and KCT(?). Ships will include a container ship, grain/bulk, sand/rock bulk, tanker, general freight, an automobile RORO, and Amphibious Assault Ships. Commodities will be containers, trailers, sand, rock, grain, oil or ethanol, wind turbine parts, steel coils, steel plate, and military equipment moving. Maybe a coal car or two for the power plant. I have 30 feet room, but it's only 9 feet wide for the majority of it. Basically 3 rooms: 11Wx12L this includes a doorway, 9Wx10L, 11Wx8L this also includes a doorway.

Hi! Would you be able/willing to make your switchlist spreadsheet available to others somehow? Thanks!

Sorry for the late response! I have in fact been working on a version that is much more flexible and not tailored to my layout. However it will still require a working knowledge of VBA to make it work for other layouts. If you are still interested email me at jsigswor(at)gmail.com and I will send it to you when I'm done. Warning, it could take a while!

For your Pico switch problem. There is a fix for that. A reshaped paperclip spring will snug up those rails

Well, I can barely do that for my HO scale switches. And anyway the Peco switches have a spring built-in but it STILL isn't good enough to ensure electrical contact. So I remain disappointed.
