    I bought a 79 CVX16 with a 100hp Merc. Running good. For $1700 about 11 yrs ago. It needed new gel coat or compound buffing and minimal interior work. I Just used it for a couple summers pulling my kids knee boarding. Ive owned probably 15 boats in my life and the Glastron Carlson was the best handling funnest and CHEAPEST boat ive ever owned and i wish every summer I still had it

    My dad used to have one of these 79 Glastrons. Had an oldschool Johnson/Evinrude 115 with hotrod parts on it doing an estimated 175hp. Boat would do 72mph with a single 5gal tank and a 175-pound driver, and 65 or so with multiple tanks, a day's worth of supplies, and our family of 3 in it. Had to rebuild the transom every 3rd season or so, but MAN was it good times in my early childhood from 2-7 that I barely remember now...

      glastron what? Even a Hydrostream Viper set up well (boat is around 450-550 lbs light layup) will do 68-70 with a 140 crossflow. glastrons dont even have a pad, and the only v4 crossflow that put out that much power and could live more than 50 hours was a stinger from the factory.

    After finding this I don't feel so bad. I put a 50 HP Merc 4 cylinder on my 1959 Whitehouse 14 ft runabout. Everybody said it looks too big for the boat. Its on a jack plate and sits 6 inches back and higher up like yours. Transom has been rebuilt and heavier than original. Boat is rated for a 40 hp. I was surprised that the 84 Merc is heavier than a 59 40HP.

  • @tbear68-
    @tbear68- 3 роки тому +1

    These hulls are not only light but they have a flat pad bout 3 feet long to the transom. Just like Hydrostream hulls, you learn how to "fly" them. THAT'S where the fun is people!
    Nice resto. I dunno who said that clampon is too big. It looks right.
    I have a '78-18' CVX. The alpha 1 has been gone thru and it's got a vortec 350 bored to 355ci. Crank n cam n all done up from the block. Makin like 415hp.
    Labbed n cupped SS prop.
    What? Sure the alpha is fine, just be easy with the "wheelies"...
    Nice example you got there.

    David,
    With the 150 hp and the extra weight of the jack plate, how is the water line from the splash well drain hole - with no passengers and with passengers. I’m thinking about adding a jack plate (hydraulic if possible) but am concerned about the water line relative to the splash well drain. Plan on putting a new 140 Suzuki (394 lbs for short shaft) on my 1979 CVX16.
    Look forward to your reply.
    Thanks

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  2 роки тому

      I don’t recall from a specific measurement perspective. However, from a functional standpoint I believe you would be in excellent shape. I’ve had a full load of passengers and the added weight has not been an issue with the 418lb Etec. I like your choice of motor and considered that same setup. Would recommend ditching the typical heavy marine battery in favor of a lighter high output and deep cycle alternative…same battery I intend to mount on my airplane. Can send details if you like.

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  2 роки тому

      By the way, I’m hoping you mean a long shaft which is a 20” lower unit. Short shaft is 15” and Extra long is 25”. The CVX16 transom is designed for a 20” longshaft lower unit.

    • @iskiforfun2451
      @iskiforfun2451 2 роки тому

      Btw - most folks around here refer to short shaft for a 20” shaft. 15” is indeed short shaft and is used mostly in racing.

      @@Stromzilla please send me the type and brand battery you referred to in an earlier video that is much lighter than conventional lead cell batteries. I finally completed my restoration project on my 1979 Glastron Carlson CVX16. Unfortunately I will disappoint the purest out there because my first order of business was to take off the crippled 1979 150hp Mercury and replaced with a 140HP Suzuki - mama wanted reliability :-) Then I proceeded to completely replace all wood in the boat with coosa composite on transom, stringer, floor, flotation encasements, and fuel deck and replaced bolster boards and bench seat back with pvc. Replaced all wiring and fuel lines. Reupholstered and added upholstered side boards along the floor on each side similar to the 1980 models - the added storage space is has really been a plus! Also had it clear coated and it can out beautiful - almost show room looking! Look forward to your reply on battery info (I no longer need the mirror info as I recently found one the mounts to hand rail). Thanks

    I’m buying an 84 cvx16 this week. Will do the same to mine , motor wise.
    Questions: do you think you could go even bigger.
    Would a jack plate help the chine walk issues?

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  3 роки тому

      Could you go bigger? Absolutely. However, not sure why you’d want to. Speeds above 55mph and depending on how you’re loaded will cause the boat to become unstable. I’m more concerned with the weight. Our setup is 418lbs and wouldn’t want to go much higher. Where the extra power is nice is with tubing or skiing. It also makes for stunning acceleration. I rarely mess with high topend…hull is not designed for it.

    • @Stromzilla

      Boat is 750lbs. Outboard is 418lbs. Estimate the trailer to be 600lbs. Full gas tank is 100lbs. And would add 25 lbs for stuff such as tools, anchor, rope, vests, etc

    I drive both cvx 16 and gt150 and cvx is as heavy as lead compared to gt150. the less weight the better. if everything is set up properly then it runs at full throttle without much effort

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  4 роки тому +3

      The weight difference of the gt150 vs CVX16 is 75 lbs which isn’t much considering the extra length of a CVX16. And I will gladly take it for the improved ride and how I drive and use the boat.

    What’s your top speed ?

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  4 роки тому

      62 mph on the gps and plowing water. Unfortunately it will chinewalk when you lift the hull too much at this speed. If we could get full trim it would exceed 70 mph. The fun-factor with this setup is in the acceleration...even with a high pitch prop because the rig is so light.

  • @keithhults8986
    @keithhults8986 2 роки тому +1

    NIce boat. Pocket rocket. with a 115 JohnRude they can do over 60mph. 70mph with a tower of power. installing and bolting an anodized aluminum or stainless plate across the outside of the transom will remove allot of the fiberglass flexing, when you slam the throttle. Mounting a smaller plate across the inside of the transom is extra insurance, the transom won't flex. Old fiberglass flexes a little.

    • @melrose9252
      @melrose9252 Рік тому +1

      @@melrose9252 The boat chase in 007 Live and Let Die made Glastron a forever sought after timeless classic. I run a 2003 18ft walk through SeaRay with a 135hp Mercury 2 stroke. With 2 dad's, 3 kids, coolers, skiies, and a tube for wind resistance, the boat goes 54mph. I owned a 17ft walk through 60hp when this boat was new to the market. A 2 stroke 115hp tower of power propelled a ski friends 16ft Jetflight, the predecessor to the CVX, over 65mph. The CVX and the Carlson were the new beefed up fancy versions, taken from the earlyJetflights.

    The two most important things to go fast with any outboard engine boat are the steering and the hard engine mounts. the size and weight of the boat are irrelevant everything is in control.

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  4 роки тому

      If that were the case then those wanting to go 90 with hair on fire would drop 100hp outboard on a 12 ft aluminum fishing boat...would not go well. Hull design, length, weight, weight distribution, cavitation plate location, tight steering, hp, and likely more can all have an affect on how a given boat will run at speed.

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  4 роки тому

      You mention having good steering is important...so true. My 2009 ETEC 130 video is proof. If you watch closely you’ll notice the unstable backend due to the outboard flipping side to side creating an unstable ride. Wasn’t long after that we installed updated steering system and everything worked much better.

    • @miota1000
      @miota1000 4 роки тому

      On a 150-horsepower engine I would put a steering system up to 300 horsepower and modify ,and of course hard engine mounts.
      Of course it all depends on the driving style. In your case, as far as can be seen in the video, you have a bay star steering.
      It is ok for you and your driving style, but if you want better and more stable. You can also modify it. So that we don't go into details now and who knows more, I repeat, I just wanted to share experience and knowledge. I have exactly the same cvx 16 as yours.

    • @Stromzilla
      @Stromzilla  4 роки тому

      The steering is a Baystar and I’m not sure I’d go with it again. The steer ratio is not to my liking...too many turns to make it turn...lol. It is tight and solid. In fact you can set the wheel at any speed and when you go hands off it stays right where you left it which I like.
