  • The second leg of Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli's journey takes Giorgio home, to Lombardy, a region brimming with engineering innovations and the influences brought by the proximity to Northern Europe, always with an eye to the future.
    The first stop is of course Corgeno, Giorgio's hometown, where Andrew is the guest at a typical Sunday Lunch at the Locatelli's home.
    Andrew repays him with a visit to some very unusual frescos by Lorenzo Lotto, hidden in a private chapel. The Christ with long fingernails is one of Andrew's favourite frescos.
    And it's time to reach Milan, the capital, with its temples dedicated to the Gods of religion (The Duomo), art (La Scala) and capitalism (the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele the II and surroundings streets, full of luxury shops).
    At his restaurant inside La Scala, the chef Gualtiero Marchesi (father of the modern Italian cuisine) would intrigue his custumers with a risotto made with saffron and... gold.
    But Milan is not just about beauty and style, it has a dark centre. It is an arena of extreme political contrasts. Fascism was very strong here and so was the opposition to it. In Milan the Futurists movement embraced the world of modern art, and expressed the violence that would shape modern Italy under Fascism - a dark but fascinating story, that Andrew and Giorgio will investigate with a visit to the Museum of 900.
    More amazing art is waiting for them outside Milan, in the gem that is Mantua, a town full of mesmerizing buildings. Among those, the diamond in the crown is Palazzo Te, a former hunting lodge built for the amusement of the Duke Federico Gonzaga and his guests, designed and covered in frescos by Giulio Romano, a disciple of Raphael.
    And to end this fascinating trip another well kept secret: Cremona, hometown to the one of the most famous luthiers in the world: Antonio Stradivari, where Giorgio and Andrew will have the privilege to be the spectator of a very private concert.

    I love your shows; watching them drinking a glass of wine and writing down the ingredients as Giorgio cooks. Andrew your excitement describing the art is informative but more than that it gets me excited and more appreciative of art.

    I love this documentals! Recently saw the one from Sicily, and having been in both regions I can say that the best food in Milano is in Sicilian or Neapolitan trattorias or caffes...
    Northern Italians are great innovating and steping forward, Southern Italians are amazing conserving traditions and cooking delicious food.

    Love all your documentaries about Italy and all the grandeur of the past. Seems that there was...either aristocracy or working class merchants, cooks, artisans and artists ,etc. A story needs to be told of the contemporary middle class Italian educated at universities and what is their lifestyle, apartment living, houses, vacations and leisure, what are their interests and pastimes...politics, family, their view of the United States, France Germany UK, for example and who do they admire and whether they are creating a valuable legacy for the future as important as what art and architecture was during the Renaissance. For instance contemporary art and design, fashion, architecture automobiles and industry, watchmaking, etc. for which Italy is famous.

    I don't think that pan is cast iron. I think it's just copper and seasoned black outside from the wood smoke.

    If you want to get the full benefits of the Mediterranean diets, then you have to go to its origin, means Mediterranean countries. Why? because the vegetables, fruits and cereal that grow there are not the same that grow in another parts of the world. I will give you an simple example, when you eat a dish of pasta or a pizza you wont get wheat allergy , because the wheat there is not the same like in US. The oranges that grow in Spain, Morocco , Algeria... they have a different taste and smell like the one in Florida, same thing goes with tomatoes, peach, broccoli and you name it... Go eat Spanish honey that the bees feed from wild thyme, oregano...and you will feel your chest burning especially if you smoke, which the Aussie , Canadian, US honey wont do the same to you. It is about the quality of the soil, water and the bright sun that make the difference. So if you are a Mediterranean fun and live in America, Australia or china, you wont get 100% of the benefits that you get it in Mediterranean region. Ciao!

      Central and Northern Italy don't belong to the mediterranean diet, pork is almost everywhere.

    • @jingo6843
      @jingo6843 8 років тому

      I know, not only in Italy, same thing in Spain, France... In Northern of Spain , the diet is mostly smoked meat from pork and they add it everywhere

      Another evidence to support what you say, for example, is that in some areas vegetable cultures grow on volcanic soils, consequently they have different slices from common soils, and the plants have a different flavor. Pork is spread throughout Italy, there are different methods of conservation, which remain linked to different temperatures between north and south ... In addition, the distinction between "mountain kitchen" in the interior is not so separate "Mediterranean cuisine of the coast": from the valley of the mountain Gran sasso (2.900mt) and the coast are only 60km, even less between the peaks of Vesuvius or Etna, it is unlikely that in such short distances, the ingredients and the ways of cooking have not been mixed. bye

    AGD & G Locatelli visit the modern museum in Milan to see the paintings produced under Mussolini & Italian fascism. A thought crossed my mind - it is so scary to witness what is going on in the US under trumpism, a regime going toward fascism & totalitarianism. Fascism has ruined Italy and now will US fall?

    Futurism or abstract and modern art are just a way for lesd talented artist to fool there way in. they often cant paint realisticaly .bad at shadowing or simply cant drawcc c a straight line.
    its terrible art to me and i find good in all things that i can.

    • @celtoloco788
      @celtoloco788 Рік тому

      modern art is the only real art left, the old portraiture styles of the past are so out of touch as to be irrellevant. Anyone who paints as they did 200 years ago is just an art student with no inspiration and nothing to say, copying their great grandfathers. Its so boring to real artists that it is ignored now. You just have a 100 hyr old mindset, if modern art is too hard for you to understand go get in your time machine and enjoy the past. But know you are not involved in art, dont go to galleries, just go to museums.

      Put a region like Lombardy-Emilia-Trentino together with Sicily-Calabria and you get a country that makes absolutely no sense: Italy. It's like having Austria or Switzerland in the same country with Greece. Do you think is gonna work? Different language, culture, and genetics.

    • @cuntadeinstrolegh5270
      @cuntadeinstrolegh5270 8 років тому

      +mira mare That's probably because 40% of the Italians living in Northern Italy's most populated regions are actually Southern Italians. Take a look at Lombardy, Piedmont, and Emilia. Northern Italy (The most industrialized area of Europe together with NorthWestern Germany) is completely different than S. Italy in terms of genetics, language (gallo italic), culture, economic development,... It's like having Austria or Switzerland in the same country with Greece.

      Dio pennarello quantre stronzate
      Anyway I guess you are not from there, right? Because if you were from italy you would know that
      1) it's impossible to distinguish italians by how they look like
      2) in the north almost anyone speak anymore the local language
      3) italy it's full of cultural regional differences, also between people from the north. Genova and venice are much closer to napoli than trento. napoli is different from palermo, that is different from rome that is different from milan. But yes, you may will be really surprised, we have a huge common background (language, religion, food, mentality et so on).
      4) so please, before tallking about our country open a fucking book.
