Will's dad tried to make excuses about why he walked out on Will as a child and Phil just did not have the patience to hear it. "I was there everyday for my family because that is what a real man does". Every family has hardships. It's how you deal with them that matters. Throwing your hands up in the air and walking out on your family is just about the most selfish and cowardly thing that anyone could do.

Phillip was reluctant to let Lou back into Will’s life because Lou does exactly what Phillip was sure he would do, he left again, and he only said goodbye because Phillip held him up to give him a piece of his mind and Will walked in as Lou was leaving.
And then Phillip truly demonstrates what a father does when proven right about a difficult issue. He doesn’t gloat, brag or rub it in the faces of everyone else. He lets Will vent and then embraces him when needed despite feeling like crap about the one thing in this situation that he wanted to be wrong about.

There may be a time when you are elderly and you will need to be looked after. There may be a time when you are hospitalized for whatever reason and you will need to be cared for. If this ever happens to you, I strongly urge you to have a contingency plan in place because your children very well may not come to your side and they will be well within their right to deny you that.

Daphne Maxwell Reid gets a bad rap from Janet Hubert fans who claim she was a bad replacement, and I don't think she deserves that at all. She just wasn't given a whole lot to do by the writers after the switch, but she did have a few moments where she got to shine and did them very well - that scene was one of them. Other great moments from her are when she kicked Phil's ex Janice out of the house; grounded Ashley with Phil but also tearfully hugged her to remind Ashley she was only doing it because she loved her; left Phil for a while when their marriage was crumbling; and the episode where the family pastor made a move on her. I really think Daphne deserves a lot more credit from the fans.

John Burke -- One of the best things an actor can achieve is making a character unlikable. The worst thing they can do is make a character boring, if they're boring they're not worth the audiences time to be invested in, they become forgettable. What they're supposed to do is breathe life into them to make the audience become invested in the character, for good or for bad.
Ben Vereen did the mark of a good actor. Not just make the character alive but make the audience hate them, its a task within itself to make the character likeable, but to push it from basic investment, to being unlikable is a challenge.

The way his face slowly drops when he realizes what his dad's doing, the cold, emotionless way he says his name, the way he tries to act cool and aloof, the way his voice breaks when he shouts "To Hell with him" and the way he finally breaks down, it's acting at its finest.

That close up to a statue of a father holding is son was a great shot. That momant of silent, knowing will might not have the love and care he wanted from his biological father, but Unc was always there for him. He always had a dad.

This makes me glad that my father stayed in my life until he passed away. He’s been there for all of us and I’m so lucky.

I grew up without my father and everything that will said is so accurate. It hits me so hard. That line that I am going to be a better father and there is not a damn thing he can teach me about raising kids is the best line. When I had my kids I made sure they know I love them and I would be there for them every step of the way. My son gave me a Father’s Day card that literally brought me to tears. That proved to me that my way is working.

It's sad that this show isn't as popular as it once was. My mom showed me this show and it's honestly my favorite comedy show. It's amazing. Will Smith's acting in this scene alone was phenomenal.

A beautiful and touching moment. Probably touched the hearts of many of us who grew up without a parent in our lives.

I think those are the worst words a child can use why doesn't mommy or daddy love me that's why I think you should love your kids treasure every moment you have with them and always tell them you love them and always will be there for them no matter what..

Something that always gets me about this scene is that Will said James was the motivation behind his performance. “I wanted him to want me. To approve of me.” Not far from what the scene was really about ❤️
