I got this watch at the weekend and it’s fantastic. What I don’t understand is people bashing it for being a two tone tool watch when there are many others like the submariner etc. Awesome video mate.
Definitely one that needs to be seen to be understood. Renders make it look crap, but in person it fits so well and the gold adds just a flash of fun to what is quite an understated watch design.
They’ve reduced the size of the Explorer to go back to tradition in a way. But it solves a problem that’s been in their catalogue for quite some time. That being the Milgauss, Airking and Explorer were all treading on each other’s toes at 39/40mm and time only watches. Now they can bring out a new Airking and maybe Milgauss and they have space to coexist with the Explorer. I bet the Airking goes 39mm or similar and stops using the same Milgauss case. They discounted the OP 39 in black and white. I bet we see the Milgauss and Airking filling those gaps in 2022. If you consider the wider catalogue this change makes sense on all fronts.
I think you’re spot on: milgauss place is too much a niche and not necessary since Rolex offers the anti-magnetic properties on their base line. AirKing at 39 makes sense and, if they follow the trend of slimming the lugs it may appear more true to size whereas the current 40mm wears much larger.
I mean honestly, I love it. I have no issues with a 2 tone explorer for the exact reason you mentioned. The whole "tool watch" argument goes out the window because less than 1% of people who own Explorers actually use them as tool watches (and I don't mean they wear it to mow the lawn, etc). Personally I think the reason it is 36mm is because Rolex intends this to be a "Unisex" model. I'm guessing they expect a lot of the sales to be to or for women. $15k and 36mm is a problem for me due to a large wrist, 39mm or 41mm would of been ideal for me. That being said I don't have 15 grand to spend, and if I did... I'd be looking hard at some other luxury pieces instead (A Lange comes to mind...).
Well said. I just got an OP 41 but I didn’t spend 17k which is it’s market price I picked it up at retail for 17k I would have obviously got a high Horology watch instead like a Hublot
For that price they can't even align the rehaut properly with the dial on a simple 3hands watch 😅 Not that people will care cause most who bought it will only care about secondary value.
I have heard that the crown isn't the reference point to align the rehaut. They use certain letters instead, which however leads to a slight misplacement of the crown at 12.
Great to see this here! This watch really works in 36 Rolesor with gloss dial. Not a fan of the steel. Still prefer and wear the 214270 in 39mm w/matt dial. Very sporty and masculine. If I were a dressier fella, I'd call for this one. The weight of Rolesor is awesome on wrist. If you're sweating the scratches, gold ain't your friend.
Honestly, I think it looks a lot nicer in “person” than on the computer generated images Rolex uses- I’m still not convinced by it but the gold is significant less offensive looking than one might expect.
Stellar intro, Jody! Loving the winter outfits -- made me feel a little cooler as Canada continues to roast through summer. Groovy Seiko cameo! Oh, and the Rolex was pretty cool too....
I actually hike around Alaska with my watches or take them into the ocean when I am on vacation. I just picked up an OP 41 and functionally it has all the same specs as an explorer so it can do everything an explorer was intended to do just a differnt dial
I nearly spat my tea over my laptop during the opening! The watch is an absolute stunner, assuming I someday win the lottery I'd love to get my hands on one. Great review, Jody!
Just bought a Rolex explorer I, 36mm, two tone watch from AD in January 2023. In my opinion its the greatest Rolex as a dress and sports watch. In this modern world any mechanical watch with a date window is a nuisance. Simplest, value and prestige for the money and all the latest technological improvements.! 😳 WOW 😳
The cold opens are getting better and funnier! I think we need a new and updated Mr X state of the collection. Good to see he's not parted ways with the gold turtle and bracelet you bought him 😂😂
Love the two tone "tool watches"! I own a Tudor S&G and a Speedy Reduced two tone. I have neither dived nor timed blistering lap times. I have used the chrono to sear a mean ahi tuna, though.
I like the gold on the hands, numerals and the indices. Everywhere else it just looks like bling. Maybe wear it with gold buttoned shirts and jackets, otherwise it's a show pony. "Pony" to match the size of the watch.
My biggest concern with the latest version is that one of its greatest appeals was its always been a strap monster . Now that its 19mm it reduces your options and even worse when you remove the bracelet there are two deep grooves in the case that looks ugly on a strap.
Interesting how that 36mm has all of that wristpresence. I got myself a very fun “gold” seiko 5 (SNKE06K1S; 37mm) a couple of years back to get a feel for this kind of size. Obviously a completely different category, although it did warm me up to the “smaller” options out there. But yeah, this Roller, definitely on the grail-list in the so-wrong-that-it’s-kinda-right category! Thanks for the review!
Hi Jody, The intro gave me a loud laugh at the end! Well done! 😂 I have to try on the 36mm Explorer again. I assume it’s going to wear differently than the Datejust models. Best regards, Claus
I don't understand why people complain about a two tone tool watch when we have full gold submariners, which in my eyes are the ultimate tool watch in the Rolex collection.
I think the majority who complained are the fans of the Explorer that loved it for its understated simplicity. The Submariner has surpassed the tool watch identity and has become a status symbol hence the gold Sub makes sense that way. The same outrage will happen if the Milgauss gets the gold treatment I reckon.
I purchased an Explorer 1016 new on a Jubilee bracelet in 1986 (I have since gifted it to my daughter). I applaud the return to 36mm and after looking at your vid, I get it! I like the two-tone Explorer. It says "up-scale mod!" Almost like taking a Grand Seiko and modding it to make it uniquely your own. Good vid. Keep at it!
I picked up the 216570 42mm Explorer II recently and I love it. I'm I bigger guy so anything smaller than 40mm looks too small on my wrist. As for 2-tone watches in general... not my cup of tea but I understand others may appreciate them.
When I heard about this watch I thought "Tacky", usual Rolex. When you see it though it looks really good and I think being a 36 all of the proportions come together to make it look loads better than the older larger Explorers. I think it looks better in steel but could easily live with this, they could avoid the bezel alignment problems by going back to not having the writing on it, it looks silly anyway.
