Growing up in NYC in a house without a TV, he was the voice of baseball to me as I fell in love with the game. The way people talk about Vin Scully I feel about him. I know there are many criticisms, most of them valid, but he always brought an energy and excitement to the games that radio needs. He and Suzyn will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thanks Jon Sterling for so many wonderful years of baseball enjoyment. Many years of sunny afternoons on CBS 880, in the yard, in the car, win or lose, big moments, funny moments, the best!!
As a Mariners fan, Back in the day I couldn’t stand his signature phrase “Yankees Win! TTTTHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIIIIIIINNNNN!!!”. But he has a pure & distinct radio voice to call baseball games. Having satellite radio for years, several times I’m on vacation & the Mariners played at NYC vs the Yankees listening to their broadcast, John Sterling was unique to listen to. You couldn’t listen to anything else. Here’s to a current modern day legend of Radio voices.
the 2001 Bernie homerun was great...but the 96 ALCS HR call to win game 1 was the best...I think it might have been the first time he used "Bern Baby Bern" and he almost lost his voice...it was an iconic call and probably his best.
Grateful to Rich for this. Well done sir. All the best in retirement for this fine announcer. “The Bamtino.” 🤣🤣🤣 “the sun will come out Tanaka….” This Cardinals fan with emotional laughter. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Back in the day I grew up hearing John Sterling on Atlanta Hawks basketball and his voice on Atlanta braves with Skip Carey and Pete van wieren along with Erine Johnson Sr while the braves in the 80s lost 90 or 100+ games Thank u Mr John Sterling
John also spent time in Washington, DC, and called Washington Bullets games with James Brown (now of CBS Sports). They were "John and James With The Bullet Games."
I'm quite happy that the two surreal World Series-saving homeruns by Tino and Brosius were in the top 5 Sterling calls. I personally agree with Sterling that, together, they were the most unbelievable feat in World Series history. Furthermore, they will forever be my all-time favorite Yankee moments - even though they lost the Series in the end. (The 24 and 18 in my name come from the numbers worn by Tino and Brosius, solely because of those two moments.) It's a little unfortunate that the clip of the Brosius homerun call (easily my favorite) cut off the beginning in this video. I encourage others to search for it on UA-cam, because as soon as he finishes the "high... far... gone" call, he exclaims the very raw and real sentiment: "I DON'T BELIEVE IT!" Even though we had the radio on along with the game on TV, my brother and I couldn't possibly hear that at the time, becahse *we* (and likely most Yankee fans) were screaming the exact same four words, over and over. I still to this day find it hard to believe that that really happened. It was absurd.
I’ve listened to Sterling cal over a thousand games since ‘94. He was never very good and got progressively worse over the years with his bad calls and schtick. At the end of the day though, for a kid like me who grew up without a TV, he was the voice of all these great Yankees moments that we cherish so much which makes his retirement a sad moment as well.
My favorite Sterling call was in the so called "Rick Camp" Game. Wild high scoring game with the Mets. It's like the 18th inning or so around 3:30 in the morning. A pitch or two before Camp hit it out Sterling said jokingly something to the effect, 'if he hits it out here this will be the wackiest game ever". Well he did, and it was.
Some of his best calls were '96, that first world series run, playoffs against the orioles, when a kid reached over and grabbed a ball that was called a home run, and when Bernie homered to walk it off.
I’m a huge Yankees fan. I knew John Sterling’s amazing run wouldn’t last forever. Too soon though. I already miss his final line: “𝐓𝐇𝐄 YANKEES WIN!!” 🗽
@@FiremanSketch Yup. I cried so hard after game 7. I was only nine years old and my dad had to explain to me how exceptionally rare the yankees previous last five years was. However, looking back. Arizona was very clearly the better team. They scored 2.5x the runs the Yankees scored. They squeezed a victory out of Rivera. They deserved it. I think we like to look back at it like it was a major upset. But that was only because the Yankees were the dynasty and the Diamondbacks were the expansion team that was younger than the Yankees dynasty itself.
I hate the Yankees, I've always hated the Yankees, but I actually never minded Michael Kay or John Sterling's voices or their calls. I knew they were homers, so I knew they weren't being inauthentic. Always brought the energy, always great calls. I always liked Sterling's corny nicknames and quips as well. Happy trails!
Whoever was the Yankees announcer would be getting these so-called tributes simply because it's the Yankees. Charlie Slowes with Nationals is better but no one listens to the Nats.
Even as a Yankee fan, I never really liked Sterling. Always seemed more wrapped up in his calls than the game and I lost count of how many time he went into his signature HR call for a ball that was caught at the wall. That said, the one catch phrase he used that always amused me is when a Yankee would hit one in the gap and he would say "and it rolls ALLLLLL the way to the wall." Best personalized HR call was definitely Hideki Matsui when he hit one into the upper deck. "It's an upper decky from Hideki!"
John drove me crazy. So many calls he would make like they were going to be home runs and ended up caught before even reaching the warning track. Time for new blood in the booth.
I'm a DIEHARD YANKEE FAN and I'M THRILLED HES FINALLY GONE !! The FIRST thing I thought of when I heard he retired was , " THANK GOD - NO MORE STUPID HOMERUN CALLS !! "

"on the precipice of defeat" gets me every time
Beautiful tribute Rich, always love your content.

A Clint Frazier home run-“Downtown goes Frazier” !!!
I always love hearing this from John Sterling what he has always says it is “High fly ball deep to left field it is high it is far it is gone”.
How could Leyritz' historic shot not on this list?! "The gutty, gritty Yankees have come all the way back, 6-0 down to tie the game at 6!!!"
Bern, Baby! Bern!
Classic as it gets
7:07 quick correction, Judge hit that home run 62 against texas not toronto
I remember waiting for him to hit 62. It was so suspenseful getting towards the end of the season.
I think 61 was in Toronto?
The Rich Eisen Show, I really enjoyed watching this, so I hit the like button!
Grateful to Rich for this. Well done sir. All the best in retirement for this fine announcer. “The Bamtino.” 🤣🤣🤣 “the sun will come out Tanaka….” This Cardinals fan with emotional laughter. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The sun will come out, Tanaka!!!! 😂

I loved Vin Scully too. TWiB was must see tv!
I was at the Tanaka complete game that he played the clip of.
The sun will come out, Tanaka, bet your bottom dollar with Tanaka, the sun will shine... ANYWAY
The teixeria text message call was great
Thank you Mr.sterling

Sterling called Larry Bird's 60 point game vs the Hawks!
Amazing!!!
The best of days...
This awesome!!!

Harry Caray was terrible but I loved him anyway. He was the voice of the Cubs in my youth.
I’m a rays fan. Even I can appreciate the Tanaka one 🤣🤣🤣
I'm going to miss him.

A Curtis Granderson Home Run: "That's kind of Grand-ish!"
I’m a die hard Braves fan and I have to wonder how is the Yankees 96 World Series Win Call over my Braves not his best call ever??????
Even though the Yankees lost, 2001 was the best WS of my lifetime
That loss still hurts to this day. The city needed that win in the worst way, but I can't say that ARI didn't fight like hell to win that series.

Johnny Most and Jerry Remy sounded like they shared a half gallon of gin and a carton of unfiltered smokes.
lol as a Yankee fan having to sometimes catch the game on NESN, I agree. Miss that 2000’s rivalry we had. RIP Remy
It is high, it is far, it is gone!!!!......but caught.
It is high, it is far, it is…off the top of the wall 🤦🏻
“ISLANDER GOAL!!!
What about a “thrilla from Godzilla” for matsui
I have never cared for baseball but even I know about YANKEES WIN, THEEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN
I am going to disagree with Rich here. I am a lifelong Giants fan. And I love Vin. Best voice in baseball.
NGL I was hoping the Lance Berkman HR call would be in the top 5
He is this generations Phil Rizzuto
The only reason I would like the Yankees to go back to the WS is to have the opportunity to have this man do it one last time.
That Tanaka Tomorrow is cringe but classic. 😂
Aaron Judge #62 is number 1?
DJ?
This guy doesn't have to pay for a single meal in Atlanta.
He was no Harry Kalas.
Rest in peace!
Big swing and a miss.
uhhh, Comon Rich, where's the Boone 11th inning homerun?!? That I think is in most peoples top 5
Best call was after getting swept by Houston in 22 playoffs....
Appreciate your appreciation and the respect. Always thought this guy was a clown…yes, out of town guy
Never understood his appeal. Last 10 years have been excruciating..........

The Rich Eisen Show, I really like your videos! Let's be friends!
