I am mexican. When I was 5 and this album had just been released, my mom came home from work one night with two presents for me: A walkman (remember those?), and a cassette: POP, by U2. Fourteen years later I still remember putting my headphones on, playing the cassette and listening to this song, the opening track, and loving it. Even though I know this album was an experiment with pop music, almost in an ironic way, I find great songwriting in it. I love these guys.
90s best decade ever everyone was somehow looking into the future, just listen to that futuristic sound , look at their chlotes and studio effects, lights and shit 90S ROCK
i love this song. U2 gone disco and they got it right. sometimes, everyone has to do a disco record every once in a while. NIN did it a couple of years ago and it kicked ass.
HAHAHAHA this is the funniest, most random video I have ever watched!! I love how into Bono gets and how not into it Larry gets, they just crack me up! LOVE U2!
I actually like about 50% of the songs on the POP album, coming from me, that says a lot. I am not a music critic by any means, but the truth is, there are few artists or albums where I can find even half of the music I like. I think there is only one artist out there who's album had more than half the songs that appealed to me.
@kenthesinger bono's idea was to create a song that was sort of like an 'ode' to pop music and it's strongest era, which was the disco era...and they wanted to have rediculous fun with them! i remember hearing his explanation to MANY of his songs in '97 when he was at a L.A. radio station. Too bad i can't remember the name of it or i would look it up on here.
@harrysingh8888, the video is supposed to be gay. Disco and The Village People represent the coming out of the gay culture and movement in the 1970s. U2 is to be applauded for capturing this era so well in their video. So many people were oblivious to what The Village People represented.
Larry dancing in a cowboy costume...what's not to like about that! HYSTERICAL!!! I am sure he protested..yet wiser minds did not prevail. LOL! Got paid well though I'll bet!!
The version on the 1990-2000 greatest hits album is the best version of this song. The GH version had an epic buildup at the beginning, and the original one felt like it started very early, but that doesn't mean the original is poor, its stll good. but the GH 1990-2000 version blew me away.
Pop, no es mi álbum favorito de U2, pero tiene varios temas buenos... este es uno de los que me gusta (mi favoriot es Staring at the sun)! jajajajaja Baila sexy Bono :P
They were just making fun of themselves, but the a lot of people didn't get it and thought U2 'had gone gay' and that's why Pop is so massively underrated.
liked the song when I heard it on sirius. still like it. Edge da shit. Bono didnt have to keep stickin his bono in the camera though. Maybe the producer of the vid told him to. The fuck am I talkin bout Bono may have produced and directed it.
@halation777 Yea American was too stupid to get it ... yet this song was on numerous US charts. U.S. Billboard Hot 100 - 10 U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play - 1 U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales - 1 U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks - 6 U.S. Billboard Modern Rock Tracks - 1 U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream - 40
if anybody else beside U2 did this, people would call it crap ....stop trying to attach significance to this, and reading in stuff ...When asked about this song, Bono said "Rock and Roll is dead, and it’s all about dance music now,'” .....
+Fred Sainte-Marie But that's exactly what U2 do best, create original stuff that doesn't fit in neither of the genre...This is some class experimentation with guitars, though...
It's from the title of an Oasis album of the same name - Oasis - Don't Believe The Truth (2005) - check out great songs such as Importance Of Being Idle, Let There Be Love, Part of The Queue, Guess God Thinks I'm Abel.
Jordan Vail Jordan, tell me about what you think the album title means. I don't want to search for and listen to all of that music right now. I'll listen to your artistic judgment.
Well to me Don't Believe The Truth means that not every thing we perceive is full on truth. We can justify what we are seeing and take it as fact but nothing is truly for certain. Science is usually really accurate but a theory can always be disproved ( not saying that scientific theory's arn't really accurate just saying there's always someone who searches a little harder and can change a truth (fact) into a lie. Same goes for the mass media (however you want to take that) sometimes were not seeing the whole story on a certain issue so we in the end have to make up our own truth. In these things we call our Opinions that in truth are not facts. However we believe so hard in our opinions that they become facts to us. I'm not saying the media is controlled by the Illuminati. I think that stuff is really stupid and couldn't possibly be true. Then again that's just my opinion so you never know. There really is no truth only what you give something its value. Believe what you want to believe, doesn't mean its the truth. That's what I take from Don't Believe The Truth. I know it's really vague but that's just one opinion. There will be plenty others
Jordan Vail You may be right. That may be what they mean. Still, I think it is an example of art ignoring logic. Telling someone not to believe the truth sounds pretty dumb to me. Those things you mentioned aren't really "the truth" if they are inaccurate.
I'm sorry to intercept any meaningful talk, but in my opinion U2's videos and songs are exactly the opposite of newcomers like "Pitbul" for instance, who try to destroy the look and feel of pure pop, although they could easily contribute to pop's ascending...
Really? A flop huh? PopMart attracted almost 3 million people worldwide, and 1.7 MILLION of those were Americans.. I fail to see how it was a "flop" here but did so well other places..
Only U2 could get away with making a song like this. Really underated song and album.
this band and this boys change the world of music...u2 are perfect,,no more bands like this u2,,we love u2 4 ever,,paul from portugal

i love this song. U2 gone disco and they got it right. sometimes, everyone has to do a disco record every once in a while. NIN did it a couple of years ago and it kicked ass.

Magnificent is one of their best songs
Adam Clayton in a sailor suit. Somehow it just fits. He has that good-boy face :)
HAHAHAHA this is the funniest, most random video I have ever watched!! I love how into Bono gets and how not into it Larry gets, they just crack me up! LOVE U2!

I guess a lot of people at the time were expecting "One pt 2"
But I like this song. I like that they went outside the box.
I actually like about 50% of the songs on the POP album, coming from me, that says a lot. Always dug the irony, fun, and tightness of this vid/song.
not what i was looking for ..but im digging it!
That throbbing entrance is immense.
Dat riff at 1:04 beast
achtung, zooropa and pop....music that defined the 90's
Genius!

U 2 top music in the world !!! by (William 1973) MI!!!!

nice album
this song is genial!
i wonder how come they have songs which are so unique and that have little to do with their overall style.
That part at 2:01 man, goddamn. Quite the original song.
play this loud in your car, and everthing will be fine!
sensual motion video
The lads have got some right moves on 4:21 especially the edge. It would pull the chicks in a right seedy back street club.
@CrystalW07 imaculate conception!!! :)
I just CAN'T....I just CAN'T classify this song. :l
It's all over the place!
@EnglishChannel1 thanks for that! Yeah irony is a tricky one some times... sounds like they got lost lol. Still a cool song and video though. :)
They were just making fun of themselves, but the a lot of people didn't get it and thought U2 'had gone gay' and that's why Pop is so massively underrated.
achtung baby 91' till pop 98' a good time on experimentation by U2
The Edge makes a convincing leather daddy. Just sayin'.
my favourite is the edge :3
Pop is a great fuckin record!
@EnglishChannel1 Was it one big tongue in cheek OTT show/ album/ tour then?
damn they were cool in the 90s
Edge w/o his beanie is just Dave Evans to me.
@CrystalW07 Did you bear it, already?
liked the song when I heard it on sirius. still like it. Edge da shit. Bono didnt have to keep stickin his bono in the camera though. Maybe the producer of the vid told him to. The fuck am I talkin bout Bono may have produced and directed it.
This would sound cool in a Judge Dredd film. "Lawgiver to rapid fire!"
:)
lol...later part of the video, larry was like "oh man, i don't get what i'm doing" lol
Клипец убийственный:))
You know you're chewing bubblegum,
you know what it is but you still want some :)
The Edge in leather! (sigh!)
I think I just got pregnant from watching all that pelvic-thrusting.
The song they did for Batman Forever was fucking amazing. Shame the film was only amazing.
Edge does play some amazing guitar on this song but Larry is looking like he is thinking "What the hell are we doing?".
"I am the law. I am Judge Dredd."
This song was made for a PROPER Judge Dredd film. ))))
SEEEEEXYYYYYYY
If this was the disco that came out in the late 70's, I might have liked it. Unfortunately, it sucked back then.
stupid and fun, light on its feet.
@halation777 Yea American was too stupid to get it ... yet this song was on numerous US charts.
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 - 10

U.S. Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks - 6

U.S. Billboard Top 40 Mainstream - 40
@gearguitarguy Couldn't' have put it better myself.
Barcelona Legends - Ronaldo Goals (Song)
Okay, Mr. President.
Was Adam planning on having a sexy party in his sailor suit?
if anybody else beside U2 did this, people would call it crap ....stop trying to attach significance to this, and reading in stuff ...When asked about this song, Bono said "Rock and Roll is dead, and it’s all about dance music now,'” .....

Alright, who put acid in my drink?
Larry in 4:34 hehehe
The guy who posted this video has a picture that says, "Don't believe the truth." Then what should one believe? Lies?

@DMNKOTBINXSU2 ademas Bono se ve muy sexy...!!!!
Is it me or The Edge looks like Mr. Slave ?
He had back problems during that time.
@harrysingh8888 wanna see a very gay u2 clip? Lemon from the album zooropa
X
sounds like they ripped off Begging You by the Roses
Yes!
I'm sorry to intercept any meaningful talk, but in my opinion U2's videos and songs are exactly the opposite of newcomers like "Pitbul" for instance, who try to destroy the look and feel of pure pop, although they could easily contribute to pop's ascending...
@harrysingh8888
best comment ever :D
I wanted to see Larry do some pelvic thrusting ;____;
Sort of like it now (the song) but at the time was responsible for putting me off U2 for 6 years with the stupid Village People esq video. Tragic.
