Ngl, I hope its just because they planned the shemue saga to be 7 titles length they keep Lan Di untouchable right now, making shenmue 3 being where Ryo being at his lowest.
If the saga continues, we might see Shenmue 4 as an arc that builds Ryo as a character, especially fixing his overfixation to revenge. Not saying it will completely removes his thirst of revenge, but at least he would be able to control it, and changes it into his own strength instead of going blinded by rage
He killed his father and nearly killed Ryo. Gonna take more than a few months of detective work and learning from masters to land a blow against him. If he couldn't touch Xiuying, how could he defeat Lan Di?

Yeah because all games are played in real time and can never skip ahead. If you got one shot to continue your legacy, you failed due to ego. Reminds me of Sega as a whole.

I love the fact that Ryo has a tiger and Lan Di has a dragon, really symbolises the eternal rivalry the tiger and dragon have. They represent yin and yang respectively I believe.

Ive seen 80s steven seagal movies with closer fights than this. Yu Suzuki got one miracle shot to make this game and he let his ego prevent him from "rushing" the story.
you gotta respect that. I for one, prefer that the original story written by Yu Suzuki is not rushed or changed for the worst, but he could have made the game at least one chapter longer

He might not ever get another chance. Especially after this. Its not really rushing since this entire game felt like filler. At least land that one move you spent hours having to learn. Some kind of pay off. This game reminds me why Sega failed.
Well you are right about that, they could have made it a bit quicker while respecting the original script, and even putting one or two more chapters in the game. Only time will tell if we get to see the ending xd

It was about as perfectly done as it could possibly be with the new mechanics, which is a shame the old fighting system is brilliant and 3 is a huige button mashing let down, but still they did nail this scene and Lan Dai should still be light years ahead of Ryo. Just wish he'd crowd fund/kickstart 4 already and then 5 after that and bring back the rightful fight mechanics!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10+ years, over 100 combos, missions, and side quests.. one anime adaption, several cameos, and a failed online game later and we got this.
What a let down. Ryo's going to need to travel to the Hayabusa Ninja Village and train with Ryu Hayabusa to beat Lan Di at this point. If anyone can help him unlock his powers and learn about his ancient relics, it's them.

Why can't Ryu just break the phoenix mirror into pieces and give each piece to some people he knows in Hong kong and keep one of them to himself?
Because then Ryo would have a couple of dead friends in Hong Kong and Lan Di at his doorstep with a bunch of pieces of the mirror taped together except for one piece.

Shenmue 3 - Ryo tries hitting Lan Di but blocks all hits and hits Ryo
Shenmue 4 - Ryo hits Lan Di twice but leaves quickly in a limo
Shenmue 5 - Ryo hits Lan Di three times but has no effect
I came to see them fight, even if the fight is more about giving one an educational beatdown.

Ya, Yu Suzuki is unfit to direct a Shenmue game , like , u get 30 seconds of actual real time combat with Lan Di , then it becomes a cutscene. Ya , if this whole game needs to be redone before part 4 ever gets off the ground. Yu Suzuki doesn't need to be leasing the project anymore

Yu Suzuki Is 65 Years Old & A Legend Of Sega & Videogames. If He Ever Does Finish This Saga Then I Hope It's With A Bang Not A Whimper. I Hope It Ends With Ryo Defeating Lan Di Opposed To Ryo Forgiving Lan Di Saying Revenge Isn't Worth It. This Is A Classic Kung-Fu Revenge Story & I Hope It Stays That Way. That Is If It Ever Does Get Finished.
I wish the game ended up being better but oh well at least the series had a comeback, I'm regardless happy with the end product, I hope they do better in the fourth game
It would be amazing if the final battle against Lan Di they rearrange a new version of Earth and Sea.

Shit with this kind of mentality game studios REALLY don’t have to try. Jak and Daxter 4? Just make it a single cutscene of Jak and Daxter saying eco over and over. Sly 5? Sly swings his cane once and then it just cuts to credits. Contra? Just make it one level with one platform and one alien to shoot. Lan Di in Shenmue 3 reminds me of Li Yong from Warrior.
The original Lan di voice was far more sinister.

As far as the story goes it akes a lot of sense for Ryo get get bodied here, sure he has improved a lot over the months since his father was killed but not enough to catch up.
Think about it, half the time has been spent investigating and looking for clues and other than training on his own the only really good times he has been able to get instruction have been few and far between.
While it is sad we will probably never get to see the story reach it's final conclusion and the two fight as equals it's ok I have a decent imagination.
So then how tf did ryo beat 2 masters in shenmue 2? 1 of which is a master in the same fighting style lan di is. Screw this game it was a big middle finger to all of us making us wait 18 years to not advance the story at all and another cliffhanger

Yu should have saved this confrontation in the very last final chapter of this story (Shenmue 5 or 6 ??). It would have been more epic.

This game was pretty disappointing...I wanted to finally whoop lan di's ass.. I did not like the constant need to spend money (for food, scrolls, to progress the game). Hopefully we get a bigger budget for the next one..... if there will be one
Such a wasted opportunity for a great game and a true conclusion to the series. I don’t feel sorry for the sheep conned into buying through the Kickstarter just to get this and some useless trinkets.

Yu Suzuki kicked the bucket here. Id be genuinely curious on someone why they like shenmue 3.
Shenmue 2 was my number 1 game for many, manyyy years. It was light years ahead of shenmue 1 in pacing and just going for it!
But then shenmue 3. Added nothing. NOTHING. Probably the last chance at a finality for fans. Ryos defeated powerful enemies especially in shenmue 2. But set up to not be able to land a punch on Lan di? Come on. Then we get that garbage anime series. It's between shenmue 3 and lord's of shadow 2 for most disappointment entertainment media ever.
Shenmue 3 had a very odd development history. After Shenmue 2, Yu Suzuki had no idea if he would ever get another chance to develop a Shenmue game again, so he decided to cut several major story arcs and move right into Guilin in order to bring us to a partial conclusion if that was the case.
In order to get here though, Yu Suzuki had to cut the city of Fujian, where we would (probably) learn more about the phoenix mirror, and then Shanghai-Suzou, both of which would be a major training arc for Ryo where he would've probably learned from many masters. After this Ryo would've ended up in Guilin and met Shenhua, but again, Shenmue 2 changed this.
In a kickstarter video, Suzuki mentions Fujian, probably talking about the original plan most likely, but as we know now this was scrapped a second time due to budget constraints most likely.
Shanghai would turn into Niaowu as we know it, a place that is not mentioned in the original outline of Suzuki's story.
Now, it seems Ryo is now heading toward Xi'an, which is nearest to the Great Wall of China, and at some point in Shenmue 4, Shanghai, but just a little later than anticipated. This will be the real training arc for Ryo.
Shenmue 3 is a game destroyed by mostly the negligence of Yu Suzuki. He should've toned down his scope but he is extremely out of touch with gaming. But hey, hopefully now you know Shenmue 3 is just a filler training arc for Ryo to get the story back on track, but it was handled extremely poorly by trying to cram one too many plot points and characters into it and then having it crash to an ending and vague cliffhanger.
I'm hoping Suzuki has learned from his mistakes with this game.
