Destiny 2 Performance on the ROG Ally - Is This Playable?

The @asusrog Ally has been out for a week now and it's time to start checking performance in games starting with @destinythegame. The more I use the ROG Ally the more a love how user friendly it is compared to other windows based devices. It feels like the steam decks cousin that uses windows and runs great. I'll be testing more games out in the future so let me know what you want to see.
For Destiny I've continued playing it and I'm still quite impressed with performance here considering how light and compact this device is. Using the 25W turbo mode I've noticed I get about 1 hour of play time or 3-4 games and then the battery is running pretty low. I think Asus went with a smaller battery to save of size and weight but I'm hoping we get a version that is slightly bigger on the battery.
NGL just the simple fact i could run this game without having to do any mods is pretty dope

honestly Destiny 2 at 30fps locked handheld is pretty cool!
You don’t need to lock it on this handheld cause it has VRR

Don't forget we can change the CPU/GPU RAM allocation in settings. I have mine running at 8/8 instead of 12/4.

I have been playing on mine at 720 p low settings except medium text ur resolution and at turbo i’ve been getting i really constant and steady 57-60 mostly 60 tho and on 15 watt i’ve been getting 52-56 i wanna say this is throughout a multitude of activities in the game.
i wonder why our performance is differing so much

@@irock8888 there is not a big difference in destiny between the graphics settings as much as resulution. on my main pc i run the game on low and it looks great becasue the game has a solid art direction
Honestly, I was expecting better performance from the Ally with this game. Steam Deck runs it 40-60 FPS most of the time from my experience and that's just at 15W.

Isnt steam os a Linux based operating system and battle eye bans linux on sight?
Insane how far the ally has come! I played today and averaged around 60fps on medium/high settings with 900p resolution 🫣🫣🫣
The graphics settings didnt make a big difference to you because it's obviously very cpu limited if you look at your usage numbers. Also, that area on the moon is an anomaly in how hard it is on the CPU. Go into an activity that isnt an open world patrol space and you'll probably get much better and more stable performance.
I mention that in the video and talk numbers of when I’m not in heavy workload areas.
How does it hold up in a raid
yeah even on my 3080 ti /7900x combo its locked at 120fps (120hz monitor), but they spot on the moon and it drops to 115 and goes back up. A very fucked up spot to test in LOL
i was getting your same exact framerate. i did a fresh windows install and was getting 50-60 on 1080p in neomuna during a terminal overload . you might have a bad windows install try using the asus cloud recovery

Yeah I’ve been playing and I get 50-60 on low settings. My brother has an ally and he’s constantly get lower fps the me. I also think because i did a new install of windows it affected overall performance. He is using windows from the factory
Did you upgrade the ssd when you did the new install of windows?

What was the duration of battery life for continuous play of Destiny 2 starting at a full battery, 720P, and 15 Watts?
15 watts divide by the 40 watt battery I'm guessing maybe 2.5 hrs.
Ive been running it a bit on my ally. To be honest im a bit dissapointed in the framerates on destiny and diablo. Rsr doesnt effect the fps for me but it does make the game look much better when im at 720p. On the other hand i cant play either as well on my steam deck. I went out of my way to install windows on my steamdeck at one point to get halo mcc. The struggle wasnt just frame rate it was the controller. Steam decks controller is weirdly laggy in a bunch of titles. Havent had that problem out of the ally yet.
I have noticed also that laggyness on the steam deck but i think its due to the lack of support from devs cause it work very well on most supported titles…even on the rog ally i noticed kakarot lags the same way steam deck does but after installing xbox controler firmware within steam its running aloooooot better…so it might just be lack of support
@@Archate I couldn't get it to feel as responsive a 360 or xbone controller on everything but I was able to improve it. Honestly the ally's don't feel quite as responsive either but some of that is the thumbsticks just aren't as stiff as the controllers. Really hoping we get a gulikit hall effect option at some point.
@@deathjunior7755 same here. It got alot better but not quiiiite there. But mind u on the deck some games are extremely responsive so it must be something in terms of compatibility
@@Archate definitely, some games like cup head I was able to get it to be almost perfect, others not so much.I think the nail in the coffin for me was that when halo MCC was finally able to run, it ran like poo and the controller delay was awful. Being an OG nostalgic halo player, I admit I gave up.
I get 60 in most scenarios at 85 resolution scaling at 1080p with high settings and everything else medium with dof turned off. I am on 317 bios
Is that from factory or did you load that in? Id like to get an ally to run destiny 2 for when i go to the in laws but want decent performance also

The performance has been okay for D2, but I can't for the life of me get the sticks to feel good. My aim looks like a 5 year old on the Ally and I haven't been able to work around it. Anyone have any luck with deadzones etc?

I have an aokzoe a1 pro which has the same APU as this since the Z1 is just a rename honestly, getting similar performance although a little higher since the A1 Pro has faster ram but yeah its odd, cause I would have the same settings on my Steam Deck and I would have it running at 45fps nonstop, I think the drivers just aren't there yet cause it shouldn't run so similarly
I've been playing since Forsaken on the PS4 and now PS5 since it's release. I was debating on repurchasing all the PC content so I could play D2 natively on my Asus Rog ally and Legion Go, which I Pre-ordered thinking I might be able to break that 60 fps cap on PS5. Thanks for the detailed video. You've convinced me to keep using Chiaki and remote playing it from my PS5. It appears I'm getting 1080p at 55 to 60 fps on my Ally with remote play and TDP around 10 watts. Obviously, the PS5 is doing all the heavy lifting and spending money on repurchasing all the D2 content only to get lower performance wouldn't be worth it. Side note I do have 1 GB internet, but with 44 devices hogging the bandwith, I'm usually around 400 to 500 mbs.

Runnung natively still has less latency
@starnoelle8248 Yeah, I've in the last 8 months bought all the D2 content so I could play natively even with Intiger and Lossless scaling it's more fluid than remote play.
if I buy this - do I have to buy all the dlc again, i had it on steam?
You’d use the same Steam account you have on your PC so it’s all of your games with any DLC you bought

So I play Destiny 2 the majority of the time. I wanted to get this for Christmas but I'm not sure if it'd be worth it. Is it worth it?

Destiny has cross save. So you will be able to play you character but DLC and silver are bound to the account (steam, epic, Xbox, ps). So you can play with your character but the free stuff
i downloaded destiny 2 on my rog ally and everytime i update it,it gives me an error any advice

Got to 60 FPS, not stable all the time, low settings, 720p RSR 80% Resolution scaling and 18w TDP
Dont go with 15w, take 17w or best 18w, the boost with just 2-3w more is insane

I’m waiting to see what the update to the bios does with 320, if nothing then I might backtrack to 317 to showcase that.
@@1UpNerdcore just got my rog just to play destiny have you figured out the best settings yet? my combo has been 720p with RIS enabled and something new i'm trying is radeon boost together. haven't had much play time with it but the radeon boost has given me much higher fps avg when using it together.

huh thats suprisingly similar to what the deck gets in destiny but it is more stable
I haven’t used it on the deck personally as I don’t want to use the workaround to install the anti cheat but that’s cool it gets similar performance 🙏🏼

Increase ur VRAM to 4 or 6GB…in the settings the bar for VRAM says you are using 1000mb/400mb VRAM…just increase the VRAM dude
