Happy New Year Lauren! Because you said you read all of your comments, i thought i'd share this. I live in the US, though my heart will always be in London on NYD. A few years before the internet or cell phones with cameras and IM was a 'thing', i started talking to someone through my workplace. Well, sort of, he worked in London branch, so our chats were always via phone calls and intercompany emails. Eventually, our correspondence turned into 14 page handwritten letters, so many mix tapes (this was the late 90's...see "High Fidelity" - preferably US version w/John Cusak) and landline calls that lasted 5 hours. Those days, that time...well, minus the ridiculous phone bills, it was romantic and magical to the point of being cinematic. Though we spoke for well over a year, we never sent photos of each other. I was fat then (and fat now) and though i did disclose that, i didn't tell him specifics, though he never asked so i assumed he had some short-comings as well and we left it at that. We were soulmates, surely, that didn't matter. Anyway, long-story-short, i flew to London...for a blind date! I found a cheap hostel in Soho. We met on January 1st, at 11pm at Piccadilly Circus. It was the scariest, most thrilling, and bravest thing i've ever done in my life.

The fact she has fond memories associated with the date though must mean it was ultimately a positive experience 🥰
Helloooo! Wow, thanks so much for the comments! Ok, well, that evening, we walked around London (agony!!! lol) and found store fronts with awnings or eaves to cuddle under to get out of the rain when it got heavy. I actually fell asleep for an hour leaning against him. Mentally, physically exhausted. Come early morning, we found a cafe and sat there for a while and had coffee. My flight home left at 3pm that day (now Jan. 2nd) so i had to be at Heathrow for 1pm (it was a very long layover, that i chose, from Dublin to Boston) so we didn't have a lot of time. Before we met, when we DID speak about each others looks, which again, was a rarity, i said to him "Do you know who Kate Moss is?" (he did), i said, "Well, i'm the exact OPPOSITE of her." He said "Ha, Okaaay, well, do you know who Danny DeVito is?" (i do)..."Well, I look EXACTLY like him....but he dresses better than i do." Now, as much as i don't find Danny or his fashion sense to be the LEAST bit attractive, i honestly didn't care...in fact, i was RELIEVED. When i finally landed (3+ hrs late), got to my hostel, changed clothes, slapped on mascara, futilely attempted to do something with my sad, damp, sticky, limp hair but w/no hairdryer, proper products or a FECKING UMBRELLA (!) , it was pointless - i threw on a slouchy, black, knitted chenille beret which only looked cute when the slouchy bit was in the back. When it slid forward and sat directly on top of my head, i looked like a giant circumsized knob. Off to either side: ridiculous. (He later told me, once i was home, that he haaated that hat. I can laugh at the whole night now because things went so epically wrong, it's undeniably comical). He, by the way, must've assumed i was joking when i said the bit about Kate Moss and thought to respond with the 'Danny DeVito' joke in turn. I say this because I'm now approaching Picc. Circus, the statue of Eros (how corny, i know). I walked slowly around the perimeter looking for 'a man looking for someone'. On my 2nd loop around, our eyes met and we both knew. He. Was. Beautiful. 5'9", 170ish lbs., dirty-blond hair, shy blue eyes, crooked nervous smirk. I died...i just died inside. Hearing him say "Hello." I immediately registered the voice i knew SO well to the man standing before me...i couldn't believe it was really him....i wanted to vanish into a puff of smoke. I couldn't tell you what we said in those first moments, i don't remember anything but 'hello'. While he was talking and showing me around the city, all i could think of was the crushing disappointment he must've felt seeing me...registering MY voice to this fat, wet, sickly woman with a horrible hat on. Him seeing me walk around the fountain the first time and probably hoping "Oh, please don't let that be her, please don't be her." and then, there i was, 'her'. I was so sorry, so ashamed of myself, i could barely look at him. Although we talked for hours, laughed, cuddled, even kissed, i made so little eye-contact with him that i had trouble remembering his face the next day. I remember thinking he looked like an older version of an actor in a sitcom i used to watch. Now, that actor's face is the only face i see when i think of him. I did even when i was just describing him to you! Saying our goodbyes at the airport, that part i'm keeping for just me. After i got home, things seemed fine, a bit weird, but fine. A couple of weeks later, i noticed a change in our mojo. He denied that it was because of 'me'...he even said he loved me, but the dynamic changed. We talked less frequently but still kept in touch for another year or so. We always had a great balance of similar and differing opinions on things, the minor fluff and the major stuff, but it kept our relationship fun and interesting discussing our views, learning each other...until our fun debates turned into heated arguments and, over time, it became obvious that 'soulmates' didn't seem to apply to us anymore. It's such a lame cliche but, we'd become different people wanting different things. So, there's that. 24 years since the Millenium and every New Years Eve/Day, i think of him and send him love. I like to think he does the same for me, but i don't know. I love the memories of 'then' - all of them.

Happy New Year Lauren. I had a good year overall despite the first few months being rough. I settled into a new job, finally figured out what eventual job I'd like to work towards (at age 36), went camping a couple times, had tons of family time, had a great Halloween, surprised my mom for her 70th and had a lovely Christmas. Onto 2024! 🎉

Happy New Year Lauren and all watchers!!! I very much appreciate your being real. I have a hard time going to the mailbox without make-up on, no kidding. I have a lot of goals for 2024. But my main focus will be to stay present. I'm typically feeling regret for things I didn't do in the past, or in anxiety about how I'm going to survive in the future. Our thinking can ruin our day, right? Clean up my thoughts, stay positive and in gratitude for what I do have. New mindset, it's challenging. I'd also like to take a yoga class, or join a gym. Be more social and see what happens. I loved what you did with the shell as your inspiration, BTW. Maybe you should start a sea-fantasy design line of some sort, you are so creative.

What a brilliant thing to do for New Year, your Lino print was seriously good, im being completely honest when I say I would put that in a nice frame and would love it in my house. Im very fussy about what goes in my house too! My resolution this year is to do more exercise and eat more healthily because as corny as it sounds, our health is priceless and so important for our happiness.

This reminds me of almost 10 years ago, 12/30/2014, when I drove from NWIndiana outside Chicago to SC, 18 hours in 2 days, leaving my abusive husband of almost 25 years , two of three of my grown sons, and my precious dog…
Now 2024 and still here in SC, away from the brutal Chicago winters, remarried, and have a whole new life.
And everyone told me”you can’t do that”…
“You can’t drive there by yourself”
“ you know no one”
Nope. And that’s exactly the way I wanted it.
She believed she could do it and she did.

My ideas for the new year are to try cold water swimming for the first time, shave my hair off for the 2nd time for charity and just cause I fancy it and I will save money on shampoo and hair dye, strip naked and run around our shared garden (obviously at night when the neighbours are asleep lol!), take part in a Nippy Dip in the North Sea and generally have an absolute blast of a year x
