ECT Button - On The Move

- Located on the dash of my 1994 Toyota FZJ80 Land Cruiser is a little button that is labeled ECT.
"What does it do?" I asked myself the first time I saw it. I learned, oh my did I learn. This magic little button turns the Land Cruiser from a mild mannered off road tractor into a "speedy" city navigating beast! It's the "fun" button. It makes the vehicle a blast to drive in town. How does it do it? Well, pretty simple. ECT stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission, and it changes the shift points to make the vehicle have more pep, spunk, get up and go!
New On The Move every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!
I enjoyed your video Lee! Thanks for the very detailed explanation and sharing views of your town.
great bro i have a 4runner 02 here..in central america belize an it does so well
I found this button on my 93 Camry, and didn't know what to do with it. I pushed it and left it on, and boy oh boy did I figure it out. My economy-based toyota keeps up with non-turbo subarus.
I love my O/D
I noticed better gas mileage as well. Only thing I can figure is with ETC, you can get up to cruising speed faster and the tranny up-shifts to that easy gear. The acceleration is what hurts the MPG. So shorter amount of time accelerating. Only wish that I didn’t have to press the button every time I start the truck.
Pour some beer on it and it'll stick on. Worked for me. ha
Another question I have to ask, anyone with a 1996 4runner V6... what is the average idle RPM on this vehicle looked everywhere and can’t find results mines at 675 as an avg
I had a 96 Tacoma and it was the same. Just bought a 99 4runner v6 and surprising enough it's the same too haha. Love my Toyotas.
It basically works by keeping you in a lower gear for a longer period of time right? And thats what gives the feeling of more power? I have it on my '96 4Runner and now I am gonna leave ect on for this tank of gas and see what happens!
How'd it go?
^Same question.^
So my suggestion is that Toyota should make a truck or car with
More horsepower and tourqe to make the shift points faster because it shifts really slow
Can I turn it on and off while driving ? My son would usually press ECT when he sees block ice ahead and unshoveled snow and press it off when he is on a good shoveled road.
Yes u may. It just keeps you at a lower rpm
Do you drive with the ect button on all the time.
You can, but I don't use it all the time. I don't drive real fast or aggressive in town, so the normal shift points work just fine for me.
can you leave it on all the time without hurting the truck?
You sure can. It just changes the shift points. Driving with the ECT on makes the Land Cruiser respond a lot like 2004 Trailblazer that my wife drives. Much snappier and quicker to respond to throttle input. I actually get better in town gas mileage with it on. Turning it off in snow or ice conditions makes it much more tractable though.
Mine is stuck on now for a couple of months on my 03 LC. I've noticed a slight increase in MPG.
Not exactly sure the accurate model number but it’s 3.4L v6
so can you turn it off and on while you are in motion(driving)
Sure can. It works regardless of speed.
how is the the ECT off the more torque mode?
Thank you for your response I’m truly greatful for that, since I’ve got your attention I’d like to ask what your idle is when in park? If that’s considered normal for most 4Runners and cruzers I have a 96 Toyota 4Runner and need to know idle standards thank you in advance.
My 1994 LC with the 1FZFE motor idles at 800rpm. What motor does your 4Runner have in it?
So is it on or off when it turns into a Porsche?
+Lee Tschetter Turn it on and at least my mind tricks itself into thinking it's a Porsche.
hi i have ect mode and ect 2nd what is the ecr 2nd pleas help
Skips 1st gear and starts out in 2nd. It's for snow and ice I think.
All I want to know is where tf is it!?
Have you tested gas mileage on “2nd mode”?
get to the point
193 gallon!
You've got to do more than this driving and talking stuff.
ECT button on the Highlander forces you to start off in second gear and it was designed for snow starts. Less wheel spin at the Get go.
Rob Watt that's ect snow ect power is let's your rpms go higher n let's you catch speed better
It's because you aren't lugging the engine as much.
lmao I roughly do about 45,000 miles a year no joke
Why don’t you move over to the inside lane, you’re not overtaking anyone and just hogging the outside lane?
