It's amazing to me how I learn things from your video that seem like they should have been in the tutorial of the game. I installed Othercide some months ago and never finished because I wasn't fully understanding what the game wanted me to do, this makes me want to jump back in to see it through. Love your reviews, keep up the great work!

So funny thing happened to me when I went to fight that last boss for the first time: The game for some reason loaded up the Maid fight instead. I easily demolished her with my high level daughters and the game proceeded as if I had fought the actual final boss, complete with final cutscene and steam achievement. So I am one of those 6% of players with the final boss achievement, but not because I actually earned it.

I bought this game at launch and really enjoy it. That said, I am one of that 94% that hasnt completely finished the game. The comments about late game grind are spot on. That said, this game is worth the $30 purchase price, imo. if only for the experience leading up to the last boss and the unique challenges it presents.
Also, I typically dont like rogue lites or overpunishing games, but I strongly recommend people at least give the nightmare mode a try before shifting to dream. It was the only mode available at launch and the game is obviously balanced around it (keeping in mind the game is meant to be punishing). While the combat is really fun, the true strategic choices in the game come from the sacrifice and resurrection mechanics - and that is where nightmare mode shines.

If you have a power meter connected to your desktop when you play Othercide, you will see that the second it gets to the main menu, it hits your GPU full-on. I suspect this is the reason for the rapid battery drain on Steam Deck.
I had a battery backup unit I had bought for my PC, essentially as a line filter (during storms we get a lot of brownouts), and running Othercide would literally trip the Battery Backup unit after getting to the main menu almost immediately.

Finally defeated the suffering after 29 hours of gameplay. One of the best game I’ve played imo. But the suffering is a pain to kill, who the hell would design a boss with near instant kill ability in a trpg game??????
My suggestion on defeating the last boss:
    Scythedancer x 2
the harvesting to grind the egg, the reaping for shredding the suffering’s armour and dealing damage
    soulslinger x2
shadow round (damage output combo with other daughters)
full support skills (spirit haste, burst, round), equip with memory that boost initiative(e.g. reassurance, reunion), initiative boost will buy you a lot of time.
    Shieldbearer x 1
Tank and damage output whatever, preferably for triggering the suffering interruption.
    Placement:
Preferably, place all you daughter near the spawn point of the suffering, immediately start shredding armour, activate shadow round, and do damage.
Just try to kill the suffering as fast as you can. Do damage as fast and as much as you can while boost initiative to buy yourself more time, if all goes well, it should be a short fight rather than a long fight. Hope you find this useful, and good luck.

The last boss issue reminds me of Guided-Fate Paradox. Last boss Level 100; boss before then 60 or something. And of course level ups get progressively longer; so while you can quite naturally progress from boss to boss through the game the final boss requires hours of grind. It's a such a stupid thing to do; just ruins the end of a game for me.

I think Othercide went the Into the Breach way, but stopped just shy of actually showing enemy moves preview. It's a shame: with all the % based variancy in XCOM likes, it would've been refreshing to see a trun based tactical game that fully embraces being a puzzle rather than a battle; expecially considering that, as the game stands right now, you can accurately predict what every single enemy unit is goingto do in any given situation; actually showing it in game would've only removed the hassle of either memorizing or constantly checking what every enemy does

    • @pinie111

At first I thought so as well until sometimes in some missions enemies started doing random things which kind of ruined the fun.
Attacking on the first turn after spawning even though you were not close, going after the wrong units (e.g. shieldbearer not targeted even though they are in range of the evil copy etc.)
Still an amazing game but very frustrating at times :D

I beat this game early on, and the repetition was the worst thing about it, followed by the lackluster story. Identical missions, with identical spawn points for both your daughters and the enemies, as well as the later spawn-in enemies. The same tracks, kinda droning. Boss battles were fun as hell, though.
I was one of the early discoverers of the busted Soulslinger chaining combo of Spirit Burst and Shadow Round (the latter in particular) for freezing time for getting a hilarious amount of attacks in a single turn. In the same victorious attempt for me (Recollection 3), I defeated the Maid, but had managed to skip the Scythedancer introduction entirely by skipping the %HP trigger, so I even beat the game without them (and they were broken as hell)!
They'd already patched it out, but I had already 100%'d the game by then. I imagine the difficulty is much higher later on as a result, since the final bosses felt like they'd be incredibly difficult without that cheese.

At least grinding seems to get you somewhere, and you can get your characters back. Darkest Dungeon needs to learn from that. That said, mandatory grinding to progress sucks. Although if you combined the progression of this game with the style and complexity of DD, their strengths might make up for each other. This one seems rewarding but simple, while DD is complex but not rewarding. Why is it so hard for designers to get into the sweet spot?
