- How to Fix a random stalling Seadoo jet boat or jet ski. How to fix a very annoying intermittent random stalling problem on a Seadoo. This drove me mad for a year and I have read about other people having the same problem, I read about one guy that got driven so mad by it that he set fire to his boat and claimed the insurance!
Having gone over the fuel lines, carb, and ignition, finally the problem showed up when monitoring the signal from the dess(lanyard) switch. I also heard about people changing the whole dess/lanyard posts and keys and still had the same problem, so I didn't want to go down that expensive route. So I knocked up this little circuit to fix the problem. The signal from the lanyard gives out random very quick disconnections, never for more time than a fraction of a second, so this circuit filters out those glitches and doing so 100% fixed the stalling problem.

Thank you very much for your info, all I need to know now is where to find the relay. As far as getting thrown overboard I wear a life jacket as I am 77 years old and don't swim very far any more. I am extremely grateful for your advice as I have spent too much already at the seadoo dealer with no luck. Thanks again Barry
+Barry Mortell Your proposed toggle switch would replace the relay that is in my new circuit. You need to open up the ecu box. See video for location of ecu boxing on Seadoo challenger.
It would go between what was the output of my circuit (which goes to the black and greeny stripped wire that is going into the ecu board) and ground (solid black wire).
The black and greeny stripped wire is the signal from the DESS post, you should cut that, isolating the DESS signal from the ecu, as in the video. Just connect the toggle switch to the wire that goes into the ecu board, and ground (splice back some insulation on a solid black wire for a ground connection).
This allows you to test that this solves your problem, but i wouldn't recommend running in the water like that as there have been a few stories of people being chucked out and then run over by their own boat and killed, due to them not wearing the lanyard.
+Barry Mortell - The safety lanyard engine cut-off key is not really about someone getting thrown overboard with a life-jacket on... the safety lanyard key is designed to kill the engine and prevent the boat from operating with a wide open throttle without a driver. (ie) If the driver gets thrown out from a rogue wave from another boat, by hitting something submerged in the water or hit by another boat (etc...) the safety lanyard will cut the engine if the driver falls down or goes overboard thus keeping the boat from "ghost riding" full speed into someones property or God forbid other people ;)
Thanks a lot, i tried and it works. The engine stalled once at the beginning but after, i ran for like 15 min non-stop and it never stalled. It used to stall every 1-2 minutes.
Great!
Is there a video showing the testing process? I have a 2001 GTX that dies randomly in bumpy chop water. It restarts ok but is anoying. Grounds are tight. I feel it's an electrical issue, but need to test it out.
If you sell the fix I'm interested. Or do another video laying out the parts ( and sources) needed and how to build it.
I don't have any more videos on this, but I suggest you try the suggested circuit to see if that fixes it.
I have a 97 GTX 787 that seems to be doing the same thing. I just spent over $1100 get a bunch of stuff fixed on it, including a new CDI from SBT. Only seems to do it when I’m riding wide open going 50. It will all of the sudden cut off with me. No sputter or anything.
Sounds like the same cause, same symptoms as mine. Something weird going on with the DES post. Never seen any other faults like it. The only way to fix it is the little circuit I made, in may case.
Do you sell the circuits? I am having the same problem with my 98 seadoo speedster..
I have a 2009 Speedster 1500, 255hp. The issue I'm noticing started with a key not registering immediately on the Dess. The key was replaced last season yet that issue continues. More recently the boat randomly switches off. Seems to happen at any speed. When the engine randomly stops, it may be a quick a push of the button and the boat starts up immediately....other times when the engine stops and I've fully lost the connection between the key and the Dess, it can often take 10mins or more for it to re-register. Do these symptoms describe the root problem your solution is solving for??
There are some similarities but some differences. Might be better to bypass the DESS completely, you could just have a hidden switch. That would be put on the wire I mention and do the same as the relay output in the circuit.
Do you sell the completed fix that's ready to install? Cost?
I don't. This is a DIY channel. Have a go.
Good morning, I think I have the same / similar issue with mine. Would love to chat about it and poss get you to make up one of those circuits for me. Many thanks
+markhurst10 Nice speaking to you recently. Glad to help in the future.
I’m having the same problem with my 1996 seadoo speedster. Can I buy this resister from you?
I am not in that business but have a look in the video description section for some buying links. Amazon or eBay are the easiest places to buy.
If I have the twin engine jet boat do I need to order 2 of everything?
It would be great if you did another video how to make this. I can’t really see what’s under the black tape
Hi, your link for the relay is not working. What type of relay is this? When I look online, there is many types of relays.
thanks for letting me know, this one will do the job: amzn.to/3bVum5m
would this kill both engines if this was the problem?
one engine runs fine but the other keeps cutting out, they both did it at some point
The problem I found was caused by the lanyard switch glitching, so if you have only one of these for both engines then it should kill both engines if that is the problem.
@@comeinhandynow So we got the starboard side engine to fire up and runs super great (always starts right up) but the port side engine is not wanting to start.
It just keeps cranking and cranking, it has a spark I don't know if it's weak or normal, we switched spark plugs with the running engine and that did not work (the other plugs work fine in the good engine).
The engine did want to start a little bit but it just dies, probably fires 2 times, when we first got it out it was running but kept shutting down after a few seconds (10s to 60s?). The good engine ran but it seemed like when we started the bad one they both died... Good engine seems to run fine without the bad one trying to start.
We did try starting fluid directly into the cylinder and it seemed like it did not want to start (but it had spark?!?) last we tried it wanted to start for 2 seconds then die and we have up and took it home.
Also before we brought it to the ramp they both fired up and ran for a good amount of time.
Could it be the dess? Mpem? Main brain? Any questions or answers would be very helpful, we intend to try to keep working on it tomorrow!
Thanks everyone!
(posted this on th forums too)
Can the dess be bypassed only by cutting that black and green wire and putting it to the ground ?
If i can do that test and it works, that would be amazing. I could juste use a cut off switch just like a yamaha wave runner instead of doing that circuitry or fixing it with a new post and key.
I think you could but you might also need the DESS key in place as well. Try it and see.
I'll do it before installing the circuitry, i'll ground it directly to the battery to have a 100% and clean ground. I have one friend of mine making it for me on a little board. The only thing i was wondering is about the relay. I'll use a 12V 30A HELLA regular relay that i have on hand. Should that work or i'll need to get a relay as described in the links that you sent ?
Maxime Routhier That will probably work.
@@maximerouthier I know this thread is old, but I just came upon it as my 2005 Seadoo RXT has the same symptoms of starting and running, then stalling. Restarting, running and stalling. Over and over. So my question is did you first solution of bypassing the DESS work? Did you also include a kill switch? And do you still need the DESS key? If not, did the circuit work for you?
@@KM33305 the problem ultimately was to replace the post for the magnetic key. It solved the problem
Is this fix still working years later?
Yes
@@comeinhandynow thank you, going to be doing this on my 2000 seadoo 951 that is running very well but cuts out intermittently
PLEASE HELP ; So I have 2012's GTI'S they both are acting up by after we ride them in rough waves for a while, the dash wont light up and ski wont start... I wiggle the fuses and the key post and eventually it works. then does it all over again???
Is the fuse box waterproofed enough? Check for corrosion on connectors. If it stops with symptoms that are the same as if the key post had been removed, the the fix in this video may help.
@@comeinhandynow NO CORROSION AT ALL. THINK IT MIGHT BE THE KEY POST/KEY DESS, I CLEAN THEM WITH A PENCIL ERASER... IM GOING RIDE TOMORROW
