  • If you haven't been following along I've really been starting to love older vehicles. They're simpler to understand, easier to fix, and the parts are cheaper and more readily available. Here's some recent videos I've made:

I'm in my 50's now and totally agree, the more you got the more you need to fix.

Really appreciated your de-badging video, and this rant sounds about right.
Just this week picked up an ‘11 4.0 2wd Ranger Sport supercab with 102k miles (always driven in the West, no rust) almost-flawless exterior in red for $9200 (negotiated down from 10K) from an older couple who weren’t aware of the current thirst for these simple trucks. I put new shocks on, replaced the tires, and I feel like I made a deal for something I can keep for many more years. I had camped out on craigslist for two months, learning lots about Rangers, focusing on exactly what I wanted, and then jumped at this the minute after the ad was live.
They were honest and had records, whenever I buy something big at least half is the gut feeling I get from the seller.
Yes, the multiple chimes are annoying, and I’m trying to learn how to kill them all. Apparently there’s two routes, one by popping a module off a board, and the other getting a Ford tech to reprogram. There is hope…

I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee, one battery (no Autostop/start) but it is a AGM battery (Absorbant Glass Mat) that is why it is more $ and heavier.
Vehicles with auto start/stop also need a beefier starter and other components, that cost more $, if you're lucky, you might save a tank or two of gas over the life of the vehicle.

I hear ya! I’m as annoyed as you for this “evolution”. My conclusion as to why we’re getting this is simply two things. One: the car/light truck was finished developed twenty years ago, nothing new has happened mechanically. Two: sales. If one make has some kind of new feature the other makes will follow, scared of not selling their models because of the lack of features which other makes have.
(And actually there’s one third thing called planned obsolescence)
