  • Join me as I flip through my July insert and discuss my thoughts on my very first One Book July. Thank you for watching and for your continued support!
    Important:
    A viewer kindly and thoughtfully brought to my attention that I have been sharing a lot of Harry Potter content in the last couple of months without mentioning J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter -- the story, the characters, & the fandom -- holds a special place in my heart, but that does not mean that I should ignore the problematic views and comments by J.K. Rowling. I'm sorry that I haven't made my opinion on J.K. Rowling clear from the outset and I would like to do so now: I was deeply disappointed and appalled to read Rowling's harmful comments about the transgender community. Trans rights are human rights. I am still learning and unlearning and I always welcome kind feedback and conversation; please feel free to message me here or on IG.

    Hi Ellie, I am a professor of English. There are so many works that I love and enjoy. This is a truth! What is equally true is that the authors of many of those works sometimes give me pause. This is part of the human condition. I hope that you continue to enjoy the books you love and hold the authors to account in much more critical and insightful ways than simply abandoning the good they managed to create. I believe you will! I am so thankful for your channel. I look forward to your videos.

      Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment Michelle. You've articulated what I've been feeling but haven't quite been able to put into words. You're right: I don't want to abandon works that I love and, to be honest, nothing can take away my first experiences reading Harry Potter and what that meant to me. You have gotten to the heart of the matter: what I CAN do is cultivate a critical and insightful eye and hold authors and creators accountable while I work to learn and unlearn how to contribute to the type of world I would like to live in.
      Would you mind if I pinned your comment? I am so appreciative to learn more about how others navigate the separation between creators and the works they create, and your insight and experience has really helped me consider where I'm at and where I want to be. 💛
      Thank you so much for your kind words and for watching!

      @@elliescorner2019 Please do pin the comment; I am so glad it helped. The kind of critical work we have in mind can be difficult, but it's so much more rewarding in the end.

      I'm Norwegian, and in Norwegian class in school, we all HAD to read Knut Hamsun. He is an absolute Norwegian classic, and probably our biggest literary pride. He was also a Nazi. We can acknowledge the artistic/literary value of a piece of work while simultaneously critiquing the anti-humane opinions of the author/artist. Doing creative writing in school myself, one of the things we work on the most is separating the art from the artist. After you have created it, it is an autonomous piece of work. A book is like a table, in that way. You can love the book/table as a story/piece of furniture without loving the author/woodworker as A Person. These two are not one and the same. If Knut Hamsun had been obviously racist in his books, we would not be reading them; they would be classified as "hate speech", which is prohibited in Norway. Our Norwegian teacher was like "yeah, he was a Nazi and that *sucks* and also his book is good". Idk why people on social media these days seem to confuse the person who made the thing with the thing itself. It's not as if Harry Potter is created as a piece of anti-trans propaganda... That would've changed the picture completely. But she didn't. (This completely ignores the financial side of the argument, but I'm not writing an essay here, haha.)

      Thank you so much for this response! I find it really helpful to see how others approach separating the creator from the creation, and imagining the book as a piece of furniture really helps provide perspective. I still love the world of Harry Potter and I was open to clarifying my stance on J.K. Rowling because I didn’t mean to make anyone feel uncomfortable or excluded. I know it’s not the norm for planner videos and I hesitated about how to approach it, but it has led to really thoughtful comments like yours, and I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and experience! Those must be interesting discussions in your creative writing courses!! I never had discussions like this in school so hearing about how it has been addressed in your schooling is so interesting. 💛

    Lovely flip!! I’ve never read or watched HP but I saw her comments and also Daniel Radcliffe’s. I really appreciated his mature, balanced response and I think yours was equally mature and balanced❤️

      Thank you so much, Daksina.🤗 This video was uncomfortable for me to post (which let me know I was probably making the right choice for me) and I truly appreciate your feedback. I agree, Daniel Radcliffe’s response was everything I hoped it would be and if mine was a fraction of that, I’m so glad.💛

    Perhaps this will be a controversial comment, but honestly, I don't think you need to mention your opinion about JK Rowling at all. Crazy that we are all pandering to others, and feel we have to appease them. Just my opinion.

    • @elliescorner2019
      @elliescorner2019  4 роки тому +4

      Hi Sharon! I appreciate you sharing your opinion, and I definitely thought carefully before filming this video. It makes me nervous to share my opinion (on things other than stationery!) in my videos, but I did so because even though I love Harry Potter and continue to enjoy that world in my planners and outside of them, I also want to acknowledge that
      I do not support J.K. Rowling's opinions on the transgender community. Having an online "voice" is new to me and I'm doing my best to learn how to navigate this space in a way that feels true to me. Thank you for watching.💛

    As someone who adores a truly extra fine line and just switched to a fountain pen (I was using a .38mm Pilot g2 for my bullet journal before)... I love my TWSBI, however even the extra fine is not fine enough for me. I have found that I prefer Japanese fines and extra fines. So far I am preferring Pilot and Platinum pens. Just my two cents.

      Oooh that’s really good to know, thank you!! I have an EF nib, but I definitely prefer an extra fine line in general. I may be back to pick your brain once I finally ink it up and give it a try.😅 Thank you for watching!!

    thank you so much for addressing JK Rowling's problematic mindset. My family loves the Hogwarts World and have had a lot of conversations about this. We won't be buying anything more that gives JK Rowling any more money. Fortunately we already have all of the books and movies.

    • @elliescorner2019
      @elliescorner2019  4 роки тому +2

      💛 Thank you for commenting and sharing how your family is approaching the situation. It’s so good to have these conversations and I find it helpful to hear how people are navigating their love of HP and the comments made by JKR. I also own all the books and movies, and I’ve recently been collecting the gorgeous illustrated editions as well. Going forward, if I do continue to collect the illustrated editions I think I will also donate the cost of the book to an LGBTQ+ organization. I’m glad that the HP community, amongst others, are willing to have nuanced discussions. Thank you so much for watching and sharing! ☺️

      If it’s something small I’ll include it on the daily page itself, or I’ll just go to my next blank page and write in there. Either way, if it’s something I’ll need to refer to again I will put it in my index! I just watched Brandy Michelle Plans’ August setup and she sets up all of her dailies first and then has a tab for notes after them, which is another great option!
