The New York episode has always been one of my favorites. It's so different than any other episode yet it still feels like The Simpsons. I feel like every problem Homer comes across is so relatable and I think it's good because you can easily side with him rather than just laugh at him
I always felt like it was a classic episode, like it was from an earlier season. Finding out that its from as late as season 9 is strange to me as it always felt much older. And then hearing that people don't like it and think its not good is even stranger. I need to watch it again, because its one of my favorites and I can't see what RealJims is talking about being bad about it, but it has been awhile.
@@GBDupree It always seems odd that it's in season 9. For me the disparity between the quality of that episode and almost everything else in season 9 is *massive*. If it was shifted back only one spot into being the season 8 finale, it would have fit perfectly and made for a much clearer mark of "this is the end of the golden era".

This was the first season where I legitimately had no idea what the list was gonna look like, going into it. Maybe I just don't think about those mid-tier Season 9 episodes enough, but I was genuinely surprised where some of them landed. So I have no idea if this is a super predictable list or if there's a bunch of crazy hot takes in here.

I'm excited to see his future rankings as well. I've tried to make my own rankings, but the further I get into the series, the harder it gets to find 10 episodes per season that I even like lol.
Didn’t like it then and still don’t. It just feels like one of those episodes that tries too hard to raise the stakes but winds up coming off like its overcompensating for the fact that it’s not very enjoyable.
Always one of my favourites, just for the exchanges between Lisa and Marge. The best episodes for me are the ones like The Itchy and Scratchy Movie, where the characters actually have room to grow. In that one, after Lisa genuinely just insults her mother out of arrogance, all that was needed is for her to squeeze Marge's hand, and then they go home together. No bashing it over our heads, no huge comeuppance, just honest, human uncertainty and emotion.
@@troywright359 In my opinion jerkass homer is good when he's not causing any real issues. ALSO there was a lot of jerkass Homer in older episodes like Dead Putting Society, Boy-Scoutz N' The Hood and Lisa on Ice but I never see people criticizing those episodes.
@@lanceuppercut_ I think its because in those episodes his jerkassery is either harmless childish stupidity or he gets hit with stupid poetic justice. Like he's a toxic asshole in Dead Putting Society, but it's very low key, he just badgers people over a golf game or his jealousy over Ned (which is at least a halfway relatable jerkass trait) and in the end he gets karma for it. In Trash of the Titans, Homer shrugs off ruining the town beyond repair, all over one super petty grudge he can barely even remember by the end of the episode. It's definitely a case of them amping up Jerkass Homer to a cartoonishly dangerous level, and not really balancing it with an effective comeuppance or redemption in the end.
This is proof that season 9 deserves more respect: So many bangers didn't even make your top 10. Simpson Tide would make my top 10 just for the Soviet Union joke. I also consider Lost Our Lisa underrated.
I actually really like Realty Bites as an episode, its a fun little romp that manages to tie in its A and B plot pretty well, that actively takes the formula of "Marge gets a Job" and has something to say about it. How she struggles to fit into a world where she has to compete to undercut people, and her struggling with her own integrity vs her need to sell people on homes of questionable quality. Its a really good marge story, that combines its cynical needling at the real estate industry, with a deeper look at her character, and why she struggles to fit in some business worlds. The B plot is a little bit to action schlock-y but its not a deal breaker, and manages to be balanced out by the more mundane character driven story. Plus Lionel Hutz's last major role
"Lisa's Sax" is definitely my #1. Season 9 is when the show started getting way too cynical and frenetic, even if it was still super-funny. But outside of the All in the Family parody, "Lisa's Sax" feels like a Season 3 or 4 episode in its charm and simplicity.
I might be thinking of a different episode… but im pretty sure that episode is a holdover from Season 7 which was a pretty emotion heavy year, so that might why
The reason I love the new York episode so much is that its almost like a weird power fantasy for me. All that build up to get to the ultimate 'fuck this' moments of homer deciding hes getting his car out of there no matter what damages he gets or how many people he pisses off is just so entertaining for me
It took balls to place "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson" at number 8 given your previous opinions on it. If only there were more people out there who'd give stuff a second chance. I was a little disappointed that "The Last Temptation of Krust" didn't make the list. I find it to be an interesting exploration on Krusty as an entertainer (How his material is outdated, how he's prone to selling out etc). The commentary on stand up comics hits the mark, Krusty does make some valid points in his resignation rant. In terms of "All Singing, All Dancing" at number 25, I don't blame you for putting it so low. The only thing that I found hysterical in that episode was the "Paint Your Wagon" scene. I say this because I personally know someone who actually thinks that's a good film (Then again, I don't think they have good taste in cinema. They said that Parasite was "plotless").
Bart Star is CRIMINALLY underrated... Yes I know it's "Jerkass Homer", but it's EASILY among the funniest and best written Jerkass Homer episodes. His senseless heckling of coach Flanders satires the idiocy of American sports fans. The twist ending where Bart replaces Nelson in the cop car is a classic screw the audience joke, and it works! It's a near perfect satire of the American "sports movie" formula and tropes. Best moment: Homer fake quitting over the phone and Marge telling Homer that Mr. Burns can't see him winking, Homer screaming and hanging up.
I always struggle with writing the endings of these individual segments, so I got really excited when that idea came into my head. I had a lot of fun writing the Girly Edition entry :)
Honestly, I consider "All Singing, All Dancing" to be a top 10 season 9 episode, and I don't mean that as a compliment to the episode, more a commentary on the overall... quality of the season. The "Paint Your Wagon" segment is fantastic and is redeeming enough to get the episode on my top 10 list due to a lack of competition.
My personal favourite is Realty Bites - if for no reason than because it highlights (somewhat) my two favourite characters - Marge and Snake. Can't think of another episode which does.
I really like that King of the Hill is on here. The series had been very short on relationship stories for a while until this point, and this episode provides. I love how Homer is pushing himself all to make Bart proud of him, and last time I watched it, it legitimately almost made me cry when Homer replaces the flag with Team Simpson when he reaches the top. A very touching callback to the beginning of the episode. My other favourites are Lost Our Lisa, The Last Temptation of Krust and of course, The Joy of Sect.
Three of my favourite jokes in this series come from the same episode, the Moe love one. Obviously as you pointed out Homer jumping out of the car only to roll back into it is great, but what about "Must kill Moe... Wee!" And the moment where Homer stop an actual car jacker from stealing Moe's car, that irony gets me everytime and it might be one of the greatest, most underrated moments in the show
@@jonahgoldstein9905 One of the changes around this time is they stop doing proper three act structures, and stories just sort of "end" with plot resolution being shrugged off or left off in a "meta" kind of way, like Family Guy. It gives you funny moments like Burns, Smithers and Homer meeting Castro, but it isn't really a story.
Even though I’m not a superfan of 9, it was fun to watch this video and see the season in a more positive light. I don’t really like Lisa the Skeptic (2preachy4me), Dumbell Indemnity (2bland4me) or Girly Edition (Pinchy > Spider Pig >>>> Mojo), but I don’t hate them or anything, and it was a nice gift to see a more in-depth and positive take on them than most other retrospectives. I eagerly await the Season 10 reviews, because although there are less episodes the fans would call good, the good ones are easier to agree upon (Bart the Mother, Lisa Gets an A, Mom & Pop Art, etc).
Marge’s escape from the movementarians with the rover bubble chasing after her with African drums coming in when it emerges from the water will never not be hilarious
Simpson Tide was a personal favorite because I remember my father coming home from a Navy Reserve drill weekend and seeing him watching the episode while still in uniform laughing as the Simpsons riffed on the Navy.
It has very high high's and low low's IMO. A lot of it is really low brow and trends that made me stop watching started here. season 12 was my last although I watch random epsiodes, they still have good jokes from time to time. Maby it's because I turned 13 during season 9 and cartoons wernt on my mind as much at the time. I did feel the writing quality dropped overall even with about 8-10 classic episodes. I love thegun episode and many don't. I adore season 5 and 8 witch many don't like and only like A few episode from season 3 so it's subjective.

I rewatched The Simpson Tide late one night recently, and I was laughing so hard my flatmate texted me “hey dude, it’s 1am, keep it down a tad”. Love that episode
This season has one of my favorite Moe lines. "Oh! I'm paralyzed. I just hope medical science can cure me." The Omnigog might have been a little late for Lenny's eye, but Moe can continue to teach us what to do if a "gangsta" disses our fly girl.
Lost our Lisa is my favorite episode of season 9 and possibly one of my favorite episodes of the whole show. Homer and Lisa sitting on the floor and listening to the music box really gives me a sweet feeling
lost our lisa is my favourite of the season - one i always remember watching on tv and i love watching homer not make fun of lisa's passion to see the museum and in fact helping her achieve that, and lisa trying out breaking the rule. a very sweet bonding moment for me
If they had Bart and Lisa doing something In ‘Natural Born Kissers’ where they tried to show the Casablanca ending at the game saving Marge & Homer’s dignity or maybe the pair distract from the film endings, that would of been great and tied it all together. Like what’s the most eye catching of the two situations.
I feel like Simpson Tide should've been into the top 10 for sure. I mean, my parents and I still quote it and we watched it when it first aired! Between the exchange with the admiral and homer "I like the cut of your jib!" - "What's a jib?" - "Promote that man!" or the "Nnnnu-cue-ler. It's pronounced Nu-cue-ler" line, I think it was one of the funniest episodes of the season and I think it holds up really well today. And the early "Bart gets an earring" subplot not only comes back around (again, absolute classic exchange "Dad, the earring can plug the hole!" -"I'll plug your hole, you little.....I mean, EUREKA!") but the opening jokes like the mall becoming nothing but Starbucks and Bart getting it just to fit in because The Bartman "is so 1991". And come on! You can't even give a number 10 spot to the episode where Grandpa beats up JFK? Simpson Tide was robbed here!
The Simpson Gene episode bugs me. It's played up like this big important thing for Lisa but it completely screws over Bart. He's going to grow up into some bummy dumbass just because he was born a male. But it's okay at least Lisa isn't sad anymore. Also not including Simpson Tide or The Cartridge Family is a literal felony.
Absolutely right to both points. Simpson Tide is one of the most hilarious episodes. The Simpson gene also conflicts with other episodes, e.g. the brain crayon or how Bart will become a judge at the Supreme Court.
I feel the episode would be much better, if they never gave a definitive answer about the Simpson Gene and left the audience to speculate about it for themselves. It would give two different and interesting perspectives to view the episode in. But to be fair, Season 9 isn't really that good at doing third acts in general. Also Das Bus should have made the Top 10.

I kinda found myself rooting against Lisa in that episode, just the fact she spends the whole episode mourning that she's gonna be like her family right in front of them and then vindicated when she discovers there's some hope she isn't, and she's fine looking down on them, the final gag even makes apparent she's still ashamed to be associated with them. Same issue happens in Separate Vocations, she's just so openly contemptuous of Marge and what she stands for, though at least there you could argue it just it not being the future she was passionate for rather than just openly wanting to be told she won't suck like her kind and supportive mother, even if she's just as openly curt and insensitive about it. I feel like this is kind of the reason intentionally sanctimonious Lisa kinda took over during this era, like they knew they couldn't enable this character ALL THE TIME (eg. Bart Star, Lisa the Skeptic, and Girly Edition).
That's seamless transition to a Bart's people speech when defending the episodes b plot, got me off guard. The real Jim's is very underrated with how he paces the humour in his writing.
Am I the only one that got emotional in "Lisa the Simpson"? Also, I think "All Singing, All Dancing" in underrated. Yeah, hate me as much as you want, but it's a chance to hear a lot of good and memorable songs. Also, I think "The Principal and the Pauper" is underrated. Yeah, I agree it messes with continuity, but I think it's a really good show of how Skinner behaves, when he's free from Agnes.
Season 10 was the first season of the Simpsons I ever owned and it’s what got me into the Simpsons as much as I am now, can’t wait to see your review of it
i don't have the time to watch the simpsons seasons 1-10 over and over again like i did 10 years ago, this channel gives me 15 minute bite size chunks to at least think about them.

This season is so all over the place. A handful of genuine classics, to mixed-bag, to borderline-soulless zany-ness. I generally agree with your rankings and reasoning; I would have found a spot for Das Bus in there, personally. Mostly not as emotional ass seasons prior were, but I definitely will always consider this as a classic season, despite the Tanzarian episode. Loads of fun plots for sure. And this really was shown a lot when I began to understand the show as a kid, maybe that's the reason why season 9 is close to my heart really, alongside the widely considered golden years

Suddenly I was like "WAIT I remember Jims talking about it when Liza plays it at the end of...shoot was it moaning Liza? that can't be right." when looking up moaning Liza didn't work, I resorted to watching your top 10 lists until I got to that part cus that's all I could remember about where you said it. The City of New York Vs. Homer Simpson is probably my favorite travel episode in the series. I really don't like travel episodes, because they're often either incredibly trite, overdone jokes about a specific location or they portray a location in a very weird way to force a joke. I think what makes this joke work is that it kinda perfectly shows the two sides of New York City. It doesn't feel like they have to reach for any of the jokes or make any lame observations we've seen a million times before, but it does distinctly feel like New York City.
I had VHS with Trash of the Titans on it when I was a kid and I rewatched it so many times I can’t stand watching it now. I could quote it word for word. It is burned into my soul.
It's funny how tastes are different person to person. I love the trouble with trillions, trash of titans, reality bites(it's got Hutz! Surely that automatically makes it top 10), das bus. Theyre in my top 10. Cartridge family is pretty good too (but I appreciate its maybe not top 10). Completely agree with Joy of Sect as number 1 though, one of my favourites. Give me that ya noodle-armed choir boy!
Trash Of the Titans is my favourite episode of season 9, however I'm immensly biased as i am a massive U2 fan, that joke between The Edge and Adam Clayton is perfect!

Two of the best lines in "This Little Wiggy" are both delivered by Chief Wiggum: 'special schools' and 'mystery closet'. A good episode and very close to my personal ranking here too. The ending of the episode is perfectly summarized in the audio commentary, where George Meyer states "improbabilities are accumulating".
Not gonna lie, I absolutely hated Lisa's Sax because of how tragic Bart's origin story was. He was completely ignored by his family and he needed them the most. But unfortunately, his teacher was an absolute *JERK* towards him, telling him that "Your potential is nothing. You are a complete failure. You will never reach your dream." If only Bart had someone that could tell him that he has the potential to do great things in life, because if someone told you that your potential was nothing to the world, you'd probably give up like Bart did. That's why I aspire to help my friends in life to unleash their hidden potential and reach for the stars. I don't want people to end up in Bart's shoes, because Bart deserves much better in life. But hey, that's just my own opinion on a dumb B-plot. At least it ain't "Boys of Bummer", that's for sure! 😂
Some people turn into mass murderers; some turn into the class clown. At least Bart made the right choice there... I think. It is a very succinct explanation of how Bart is who he is in about, oh, three minutes. At least it doesn't go into complete despair like Boys of Bummer, which is just... awful. Apart from the "modern-day Deadwood" line there is nothing about that episode worth recommending.
One theory that also makes it worse is that Bart probably has ADHD: He's not stupid, as has been shown multiple times (e.g, learning french so quickly), he just can't focus if he's not interested. And because he's not interested, he doesn't learn, and that makes it even harder to be interested. He needs more support and help, but 'Murica's gotta give the police army vehicles, so goodbye school funding!

Re "King of the Hill", I partially agree with you on Brad & Neil. Steven Webber's persona is a bit too mellow for this kind of character, but I thought Brendan Fraser was really good. I always get a laugh at his reading of, "Oh! This just in! Powersauce is amazing!"

For my money, The City of New York VS. Homer Simpson is the best episode of this year. (Holdover from my favorite Season wow) That boot scene is so awesome and satisfying. The Joy of Sect is a good second and is arguably on par. I love the idea of Springfield getting abducted into a cult it's so well done. And Homer's stupidity blocking him from joining a cult is so fucking hilarious. "Nana nana nana nana Leader, Leader!, Leader! -Bat Man!"
Seeing so many great episodes in the list (and the honourable mentions) reminds me that I like this season as a whole. If it's the beginning of the end, at least it begins its descent slowly.
I didn't know Jordache was a brand as a kid, so when Bart said that silly word in that newscaster cadence I would laugh uncontrollably for fove minutes every time

I still say Bart Carni is way underrated! I really enjoy all the fun carnival gags, and that scene with Wiggum and Homer. Principal and the Pauper seems to be a common bubble episode for people. However for me, I like the dramatic rush of the second half of the story, however I respect that it’s not for everyone. Still I think that that episode deserves less crap thrown its way! It has some wonderful memorable moments! I love Lisa and Ralph’s principal Skinner recap by the way. I’m also a big fan of Girly Edition. Glad to see that on your list! Joy of Sect is also a fantastic number one choice!

Season 9 is definitely still good. Its the Silver-Age which followed seasons 2-8. Still has a lot of humour & heart but maybe in lower densities.
season 9 is so controversial, I think that really depends on who you're talking to.

I actually really like Realty Bites as an episode, its a fun little romp that manages to tie in its A and B plot pretty well, that actively takes the formula of "Marge gets a Job" and has something to say about it. How she struggles to fit into a world where she has to compete to undercut people, and her struggling with her own integrity vs her need to sell people on homes of questionable quality. Its a really good marge story, that combines its cynical needling at the real estate industry, with a deeper look at her character, and why she struggles to fit in some business worlds.
The B plot is a little bit to action schlock-y but its not a deal breaker, and manages to be balanced out by the more mundane character driven story. Plus Lionel Hutz's last major role
"Lisa's Sax" is definitely my #1. Season 9 is when the show started getting way too cynical and frenetic, even if it was still super-funny. But outside of the All in the Family parody, "Lisa's Sax" feels like a Season 3 or 4 episode in its charm and simplicity.
I might be thinking of a different episode… but im pretty sure that episode is a holdover from Season 7 which was a pretty emotion heavy year, so that might why
The reason I love the new York episode so much is that its almost like a weird power fantasy for me. All that build up to get to the ultimate 'fuck this' moments of homer deciding hes getting his car out of there no matter what damages he gets or how many people he pisses off is just so entertaining for me

It took balls to place "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson" at number 8 given your previous opinions on it. If only there were more people out there who'd give stuff a second chance.
I was a little disappointed that "The Last Temptation of Krust" didn't make the list. I find it to be an interesting exploration on Krusty as an entertainer (How his material is outdated, how he's prone to selling out etc). The commentary on stand up comics hits the mark, Krusty does make some valid points in his resignation rant.
In terms of "All Singing, All Dancing" at number 25, I don't blame you for putting it so low. The only thing that I found hysterical in that episode was the "Paint Your Wagon" scene. I say this because I personally know someone who actually thinks that's a good film (Then again, I don't think they have good taste in cinema. They said that Parasite was "plotless").
I really don't like "The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson". Maybe it's because I don't really like New York City.
I feel like if Paint Your Wagon was in another episode, it would have been a top 10 for the season on that merit alone.
Bart Star is CRIMINALLY underrated...
Yes I know it's "Jerkass Homer", but it's EASILY among the funniest and best written Jerkass Homer episodes. His senseless heckling of coach Flanders satires the idiocy of American sports fans. The twist ending where Bart replaces Nelson in the cop car is a classic screw the audience joke, and it works! It's a near perfect satire of the American "sports movie" formula and tropes.
Best moment: Homer fake quitting over the phone and Marge telling Homer that Mr. Burns can't see him winking, Homer screaming and hanging up.

I will openly admit "All Singing All Dancing" is a bad episode, but no one's ever going to tell me "Paint Your Wagon" isn't a banger.
Honestly, I consider "All Singing, All Dancing" to be a top 10 season 9 episode, and I don't mean that as a compliment to the episode, more a commentary on the overall... quality of the season. The "Paint Your Wagon" segment is fantastic and is redeeming enough to get the episode on my top 10 list due to a lack of competition.
I did love the Paint Your Wagon stuff, but I also genuinely enjoy the parts with Snake, and the self-burn at the end where they admit it was lame.
as much as i dont like the concept of a clip show, all singing all dancing was genuinely rly enjoyable for me
My personal favourite is Realty Bites - if for no reason than because it highlights (somewhat) my two favourite characters - Marge and Snake. Can't think of another episode which does.
King of The Hill has probably my favorite Simpsons joke ever. The "hospital please" is something I quote all the time. Perfect comedic timing.
I really like that King of the Hill is on here. The series had been very short on relationship stories for a while until this point, and this episode provides. I love how Homer is pushing himself all to make Bart proud of him, and last time I watched it, it legitimately almost made me cry when Homer replaces the flag with Team Simpson when he reaches the top. A very touching callback to the beginning of the episode.
My other favourites are Lost Our Lisa, The Last Temptation of Krust and of course, The Joy of Sect.
Three of my favourite jokes in this series come from the same episode, the Moe love one.
Obviously as you pointed out Homer jumping out of the car only to roll back into it is great, but what about "Must kill Moe... Wee!" And the moment where Homer stop an actual car jacker from stealing Moe's car, that irony gets me everytime and it might be one of the greatest, most underrated moments in the show
Why did you get rid of “The Trouble with Trillions”? That one’s really memorable.
It has some great moments, but I guess in the end it's a little too high on the "wacky" scale.

@@jonahgoldstein9905 One of the changes around this time is they stop doing proper three act structures, and stories just sort of "end" with plot resolution being shrugged off or left off in a "meta" kind of way, like Family Guy. It gives you funny moments like Burns, Smithers and Homer meeting Castro, but it isn't really a story.
Even though I’m not a superfan of 9, it was fun to watch this video and see the season in a more positive light. I don’t really like Lisa the Skeptic (2preachy4me), Dumbell Indemnity (2bland4me) or Girly Edition (Pinchy > Spider Pig >>>> Mojo), but I don’t hate them or anything, and it was a nice gift to see a more in-depth and positive take on them than most other retrospectives. I eagerly await the Season 10 reviews, because although there are less episodes the fans would call good, the good ones are easier to agree upon (Bart the Mother, Lisa Gets an A, Mom & Pop Art, etc).
I am shocked that The Cartridge Family isn't in this list.
Also Lost Our Lisa is very underrated.

Simpson Tide was a personal favorite because I remember my father coming home from a Navy Reserve drill weekend and seeing him watching the episode while still in uniform laughing as the Simpsons riffed on the Navy.
The Catridge Family is easily my #1, that soccer segment is absolutely hilarious.

It has very high high's and low low's IMO. A lot of it is really low brow and trends that made me stop watching started here. season 12 was my last although I watch random epsiodes, they still have good jokes from time to time. Maby it's because I turned 13 during season 9 and cartoons wernt on my mind as much at the time. I did feel the writing quality dropped overall even with about 8-10 classic episodes. I love thegun episode and many don't. I adore season 5 and 8 witch many don't like and only like A few episode from season 3 so it's subjective.

Lost our Lisa is my favorite episode of season 9 and possibly one of my favorite episodes of the whole show. Homer and Lisa sitting on the floor and listening to the music box really gives me a sweet feeling

If they had Bart and Lisa doing something In ‘Natural Born Kissers’ where they tried to show the Casablanca ending at the game saving Marge & Homer’s dignity or maybe the pair distract from the film endings, that would of been great and tied it all together. Like what’s the most eye catching of the two situations.
I feel like Simpson Tide should've been into the top 10 for sure. I mean, my parents and I still quote it and we watched it when it first aired! Between the exchange with the admiral and homer "I like the cut of your jib!" - "What's a jib?" - "Promote that man!" or the "Nnnnu-cue-ler. It's pronounced Nu-cue-ler" line, I think it was one of the funniest episodes of the season and I think it holds up really well today. And the early "Bart gets an earring" subplot not only comes back around (again, absolute classic exchange "Dad, the earring can plug the hole!" -"I'll plug your hole, you little.....I mean, EUREKA!") but the opening jokes like the mall becoming nothing but Starbucks and Bart getting it just to fit in because The Bartman "is so 1991".
And come on! You can't even give a number 10 spot to the episode where Grandpa beats up JFK? Simpson Tide was robbed here!
The Simpson Gene episode bugs me. It's played up like this big important thing for Lisa but it completely screws over Bart. He's going to grow up into some bummy dumbass just because he was born a male. But it's okay at least Lisa isn't sad anymore.
Also not including Simpson Tide or The Cartridge Family is a literal felony.
Absolutely right to both points. Simpson Tide is one of the most hilarious episodes.
The Simpson gene also conflicts with other episodes, e.g. the brain crayon or how Bart will become a judge at the Supreme Court.
I feel the episode would be much better, if they never gave a definitive answer about the Simpson Gene and left the audience to speculate about it for themselves. It would give two different and interesting perspectives to view the episode in. But to be fair, Season 9 isn't really that good at doing third acts in general.
Also Das Bus should have made the Top 10.

I kinda found myself rooting against Lisa in that episode, just the fact she spends the whole episode mourning that she's gonna be like her family right in front of them and then vindicated when she discovers there's some hope she isn't, and she's fine looking down on them, the final gag even makes apparent she's still ashamed to be associated with them. Same issue happens in Separate Vocations, she's just so openly contemptuous of Marge and what she stands for, though at least there you could argue it just it not being the future she was passionate for rather than just openly wanting to be told she won't suck like her kind and supportive mother, even if she's just as openly curt and insensitive about it. I feel like this is kind of the reason intentionally sanctimonious Lisa kinda took over during this era, like they knew they couldn't enable this character ALL THE TIME (eg. Bart Star, Lisa the Skeptic, and Girly Edition).

That's seamless transition to a Bart's people speech when defending the episodes b plot, got me off guard.
The real Jim's is very underrated with how he paces the humour in his writing.
Am I the only one that got emotional in "Lisa the Simpson"? Also, I think "All Singing, All Dancing" in underrated. Yeah, hate me as much as you want, but it's a chance to hear a lot of good and memorable songs.
Also, I think "The Principal and the Pauper" is underrated. Yeah, I agree it messes with continuity, but I think it's a really good show of how Skinner behaves, when he's free from Agnes.
Plus it has some of my favourite lines “may I borrow your copy of Swank, Armin?” And “up yours children!”
All Singing, All Dancing is awful, but yes, Principal and the Pauper is underrated.

i don't have the time to watch the simpsons seasons 1-10 over and over again like i did 10 years ago, this channel gives me 15 minute bite size chunks to at least think about them.

This season is so all over the place. A handful of genuine classics, to mixed-bag, to borderline-soulless zany-ness.
I generally agree with your rankings and reasoning; I would have found a spot for Das Bus in there, personally. You've given me a new appreciation for Lisa the Skeptic, which for some reason didn't resonate as much growing up.

Mostly not as emotional ass seasons prior were, but I definitely will always consider this as a classic season, despite the Tanzarian episode. Loads of fun plots for sure. And this really was shown a lot when I began to understand the show as a kid, maybe that's the reason why season 9 is close to my heart really, alongside the widely considered golden years

The City of New York Vs. Homer Simpson is probably my favorite travel episode in the series.
I really don't like travel episodes, because they're often either incredibly trite, overdone jokes about a specific location or they portray a location in a very weird way to force a joke.
I think what makes this joke work is that it kinda perfectly shows the two sides of New York City. It doesn't feel like they have to reach for any of the jokes or make any lame observations we've seen a million times before, but it does distinctly feel like New York City.
I had VHS with Trash of the Titans on it when I was a kid and I rewatched it so many times I can’t stand watching it now. I could quote it word for word. It is burned into my soul.
"Act three falls apart..."
This seems to be a pattern this season and the next and the next ...

It's funny how tastes are different person to person. I love the trouble with trillions, trash of titans, reality bites(it's got Hutz! Surely that automatically makes it top 10), das bus. Theyre in my top 10. Cartridge family is pretty good too (but I appreciate its maybe not top 10). Completely agree with Joy of Sect as number 1 though, one of my favourites. Give me that ya noodle-armed choir boy!
Trash Of the Titans is my favourite episode of season 9, however I'm immensly biased as i am a massive U2 fan, that joke between The Edge and Adam Clayton is perfect!
Honestly I don't know how you left off Realty Bites or how it wasn't even a bubble episode. Purple drapes is the best joke of the entire season.

My favorite season 9 episode is Trash of the titans because I love the garbage man song and how ridiculous the ending is.
Two of the best lines in "This Little Wiggy" are both delivered by Chief Wiggum: 'special schools' and 'mystery closet'.
A good episode and very close to my personal ranking here too. The ending of the episode is perfectly summarized in the audio commentary, where George Meyer states "improbabilities are accumulating".
Favorite joke from a sort of "meh" episode from this season: "The blunchblack of blotre blame"
Not gonna lie, I absolutely hated Lisa's Sax because of how tragic Bart's origin story was. He was completely ignored by his family and he needed them the most. But unfortunately, his teacher was an absolute *JERK* towards him, telling him that "Your potential is nothing. You are a complete failure. You will never reach your dream."
If only Bart had someone that could tell him that he has the potential to do great things in life, because if someone told you that your potential was nothing to the world, you'd probably give up like Bart did.
That's why I aspire to help my friends in life to unleash their hidden potential and reach for the stars. I don't want people to end up in Bart's shoes, because Bart deserves much better in life.
But hey, that's just my own opinion on a dumb B-plot. At least it ain't "Boys of Bummer", that's for sure! 😂
Some people turn into mass murderers; some turn into the class clown. At least Bart made the right choice there... I think. It is a very succinct explanation of how Bart is who he is in about, oh, three minutes. At least it doesn't go into complete despair like Boys of Bummer, which is just... awful. Apart from the "modern-day Deadwood" line there is nothing about that episode worth recommending.
It's why I feel like Barthood is one of those later simpsons gems - I absolutely love that episode

One theory that also makes it worse is that Bart probably has ADHD: He's not stupid, as has been shown multiple times (e.g, learning french so quickly), he just can't focus if he's not interested. And because he's not interested, he doesn't learn, and that makes it even harder to be interested.
He needs more support and help, but 'Murica's gotta give the police army vehicles, so goodbye school funding!

Re "King of the Hill", I partially agree with you on Brad & Neil. Steven Webber's persona is a bit too mellow for this kind of character, but I thought Brendan Fraser was really good. I always get a laugh at his reading of, "Oh! This just in! Powersauce is amazing!"

For my money, The City of New York VS. Homer Simpson is the best episode of this year. (Holdover from my favorite Season wow) That boot scene is so awesome and satisfying. The Joy of Sect is a good second and is arguably on par. I love the idea of Springfield getting abducted into a cult it's so well done. And Homer's stupidity blocking him from joining a cult is so fucking hilarious. "Nana nana nana nana Leader, Leader!, Leader! -Bat Man!"

I still say Bart Carni is way underrated! I really enjoy all the fun carnival gags, and that scene with Wiggum and Homer. Principal and the Pauper seems to be a common bubble episode for people. However for me, I like the dramatic rush of the second half of the story, however I respect that it’s not for everyone. Still I think that that episode deserves less crap thrown its way! It has some wonderful memorable moments! I love Lisa and Ralph’s principal Skinner recap by the way. I’m also a big fan of Girly Edition. Glad to see that on your list! Joy of Sect is also a fantastic number one choice!
