Daedelus is without a doubt one of the most unique producers I've ever listened to. His level of creativity is mind blowing. It's so hard to even describe his many releases in one genre because he dabbles in so many styles he's taken traditional styles of electronic and added his own take and it's simply incredible and amazing
I completely agree! He's one of the most exciting and innovative music producers today. I think he's a little ahead of his time, but this kind will take off eventually.
10 years later and this shit is still futuristic, watched this for the first time as a young teen starting to get interested in DJing, how times have changed! Big up Daedelus ya legend!

Forever changed my imagining and interpretation of music and sound as a whole. Truly unique
Discovered this today, I was blown away when I saw how old is this performance! Unbelievable how it was ahead of times, and incredible use of Monome as well
@ajdanlace The camera editing makes it a bit unclear, but the Monome (the pad thing) is lighting up different parts of a loop, basically one sample for each line. When pressing the buttons it'll trigger that point in the loop, chopping the small samples up further, sometimes replacing the sample with another, at other times changing the speed or pitch, creating collisions and juxtapositions. Thats pretty much the idea, there is other stuff going on with the smaller Monome, but it's a start.
Huh! All my crew went through the "using non-standard midi controllers with Ableton and Vsts to create glitch-hop" in 2005 through 2010 and now it's all about modular with laptops being seen as something to be broken free from. My trigger finger hasn't left the shelf in 6 years.
Love this dude, saw this guy SMASH a show back in 2008, right around when Fair Weather Friends/Love To Make Music To dropped. Love to see that he got on KEXP way before I knew about KEXP and how dope this radio station is. Some people in Seattle don't know how good they got it. Big Up!
I've watched this video so many times over the years and I still love the expressions of joy on his face man,he is just feeling it, getting down...people have to be annoying and over analyze shit.
@Daedelusdarling This is why I love you. Ever the refined, practical gentleman. I firmly believe one can not be at their peak without being humble. You always come across as so humble in interviews and you are the most brilliant musician/DJ in my eyes, you draw out the dark side, the excitement, the liveliness, the irony in life through sound. I feel like this is the new wave of DJing. You do not need turntables with something like this, and I think that is really cool. Great for parties and just rocking a show. All these musicians like FlyLo, Daedelus, and Nosaj Thing are changing the music scene as we speak and it is awesome!

+NYCBostero dude. haven't you heard? playing a traditional instrument is uber passé. it's all about those rubber buttons now. lol! sardonicism aside, i have no doubt that if this guy were to apply the same level of focus and passion to say, classical during the time of mozart, bach, beethoven, and brahms he'd be just as prolific. it's that ASD mind and, undoubtably, some kind of external factor (stimulant/ whatever) that allow the artists of today to distinguish themselves. i do feel as if there is a lack a humanity in said art, however. whether that's due to a lack of inspiration or simply a testament of the times is debatable. and i'm not even a fan of this dude.
I got to see this guy live, it was great. I stole an event poster when it was over and he signed it for me. then posed for a pic flipping off the camera coolest guy ever!

Hello Crissiemichelle, thank you for your thought, it works a little different then that. The device is call Monome, and in this case it is working with Max/MSP controlling samples (mostly the large 256) and effects (mostly the small 64).
@GSFaire The song he is sampling from at the 6:30 mark is KC Accidental, from the album You Forgot It In People, and the artist is Broken Social Scene.
Really? Please point out the hardware or software he uses to generate music. All I see is a Monome which can start\stop\mix samples like a standard turntable would. So funny you wrote your comment 2 years ago and now here we are, arguing :D.
Man...I'm just getting on this KEXP live sets... Just finished watching Nosaj Thing and now this dude! I love his beat he made w/ pidgeon john and busdriver. PWNAGE.
@krakath, thanks for that explanation. The difference, though, seems like semantic hair-splitting and doesn't seem very useful. The midi controllers trigger pre-recorded sounds just as the turntables do. Only the medium that contains the sounds is different. And what about music on CD, or iPod, or on a hard drive? In any regard, it's a matter of taking pre-recorded sounds and combining them in a new context and in a live setting. Isn't that what DJ's of any kind do?
A looooooong time ago (probably around 2005?) I saw a (not sure if it was THE) debut of the Monome at a warehouse show in SF. It was such a dope concept. Daedelus was the perfect collaborator.. I mean, what a fucking dope way to manipulate samples. To see how many DAW controllers have adapted the same design over the years is unsurprising, but still really amazing. I got to see Daedelus around the time of this performance when he toured with The Very Best. It was SUCH a sick show! This music still sounds as fresh as ever. Long live Daedelus!
