The Amish themselves belong to the anabaptist group which also includes the mennonites ,brethren, they rejected the teachings of the catholic church and were persecuted for their faith during the Protestant reformation, they sought religous freedom in America during the late 1600's ;Jacob Amman was the first amish person who believed certain things; his followers were known as the Amish , their story is very similiar to the Pilgrims.

You could try Pentecostal or apostolic church and go from there. There way of living is different that Amish, however they have same some the same values. Amish don't use electricity or use tvs, Apostolics don't either and Pentecostals some do. But they both have same principles. If your looking to be apart of Amish, the closest thing is Apostolic. If you see an Apostolic church in your town "so and so Apostolic church" or Pentecostal try a service and have some questions. Even if you are a believer in God or something you can try a service to see what the similar things they'll have with Amish.
Of course the Amish do differ with doing their own farming, no vehicles, etc..
But there isn't any other faith that is just like Amish. Amish are unique but so restrictive. However it works for people I guess.

+John 3:16 Salvation Allow me to correct here just a bit, the Apostolics that you refer to are what one would call Oneness Apostolics, formerly known as Jesus Only. And while they preach not to have television, many do nowadays. My great-grandmother was a snake handler, and my cousins in Kentucky still are today.
When you say Pentecostal, remember that it comes in a variety. Most people associate Pentecostal with Jesus Only, but there are Charismatics and the denominations like Church of God-Cleveland Assembly, Pentecostal Holiness International, Assembly of God and the Foursquare Church of the Gospel that are all Pentecostal but not Apostolic Oneness, which the United Pentecostal Church International is Apostolic Oneness.
Most of the independent Apostolic churches have names such as The Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ With Signs Following. That's the one my great-grandmother belonged to.
The Mountain Assembly of God church is Pentecostal but also Baptist. Don't ask me how they worked that out, but they somehow have.
Pentecostal is the experience, denomination is the creed. I hope that helps because a lot of people who don't know the differences would automatically assume everyone called Pentecostal is Apostolic Oneness, and that is simply not the case.
Actually, the only differences in the Pentecostal churches mentioned above are more about certain arguments about whether or not to count the people who attended church. The more independent Apostolic Oneness churches might not believe in having a tv, it has been my experience that they do. But I have heard myself a few Amish people tell me that they speak in tongues, which would make them Pentecostal by definition.
I have also seen Baptists, Methodists, Nazarenes, Roman Catholics, Episcopalians (I am Episcopalian), Wesleyans and Quakers speak in tongues. So it is the experience of what we call Pentecostal, yet none of them are denominational Pentecostal.
When you speak of Pentecostal, please remember to say which particular ones you refer to.

Yes you are correct Andrew Lang the more strict conservative Amish have no churches.I grew up in the Amish Church setting,my mother on the other hand grew up,in Belleville,Pa.where they meet in their houses in wintertime and in the barn during the summer months. The Lancaster Amish would be of the same group.

I am not Amish though have considerable admiration for Mennonites in general. I love the accapella singing whilst I don't believe that praise should be limited to that for Psalms 149 and 150 make it clear that instruments also should be used in praise. However, since God looks on the heart not the outward appearance, Christians also should not make the outward appearance the be all and end all.

David Grimoldby Psalms is old Testament. Also the Bible is clear that we should dress modestly. The Bible says we should not be of the world.

I agree with you 200% Ms Lizzie Philips shorts, tank tops, jeans and sandals have no business in church. Dress should be modest and respectful.. did they enter the temple of Lord half naked?

When I first heard this song, with the droning bass and tenor parts, I thought it was a hymn from the old shape note singing days. Sure enough it was; it was written by Aldine Silliman Kieffer (August 1, 1840 - November 30, 1904) a Mennonite music composer, and a leading proponent of shape-note musical notation. ( BTW, is this song only associated with Amish or Mennonite funerals, or is it just as likely to be sung at a regular Sunday service? )

Simon, thank you! Another question: I thought Old Order Amish didn't have church buildings but met in buildings that are large enough (like shops) on their farms.

When I went to Christian funerals in Nepal, they have much the same custom. The coffin is open and everyone puts a flower on the coffin, (which is similar to the Hindu custom prior to cremation). The casket is left open, (or partially open depending on the state of the body) in the church for people to pay their respects whilst close family members will stay, others just visit and pray for the family members who are grieving. I liked that custom as it draws the family of God closer together.

Those might not actually be electric lights, a lot of newer construction has a certain type of skylight that reflects the light down from outside. Think they are called Solatube Daylighting Systems.

Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God, in his wise providence, to take out of this world
the soul of your deceased aunt, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust; looking for the general Resurrection in the last day, and the life of the world to come, through our LORD JESUS CHRIST; at whose second coming in glorious majesty to judge the world, the earth and the sea shall give up their dead; and the corruptible bodies of those who sleep in Him shall be changed, and made like unto his own glorious body; according to the mighty working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself.
I am the resurrection and the life, saith the LORD: he that believeth in me, though she were dead, yet shall she live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me, shall never die. John 11: 25-26.
I KNOW that my Redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth And though, after my skin, worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another. Job 18:25-27.
We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. The LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the Name of the LORD. 1 Tim. 6:7 & Job 1:21.

Interesting, I live near the Ohio and Indiana line in Ohio and have worked amongst the Amish for most of my life, I have friends in several States from all "Orders" and never heard of the Old Order Amish having Church buildings.

sawyer45306 I grew up in this very church and we always had a church building. The Amish in Oakland are not considered Old Order Amish, but I do have some Old Order Amish cousins in Somerset County, PA and they have church buildings as well.
