Thank you. Love it. Reinforced how important it is the way you close your fingers in like a box with a lid on it, sitting position etc. Have managed little songs.. twinkle twinkle... hardest Joy to the world but just played with both hands not with the bass notes yet..so relaxing. Having these videos will help me stay motivated when learning on my own mostly.

Chris was a great teacher. Keep at it; practice and noodle around as much as you can; as you get to know the harp better and better it will start to "click" and songs will be easier and easier to play and accompaniment will be easier to figure out. I practice for five to ten minutes as many times a day as I can manage. Sometimes up to ten or more times..

I really like that "Ladder"! It's a real mental workout, and really helps a rank newb (to the harp) like me to find their way around the strings. Thanks!

Strange stuff. I'm listening to his instructions and holding a small 19 string lap harp he made in 1983 that i came across in a used item shop. . His wifes name is in it too so I assume she had a hand in the construction. .

at last! someone who's giving a harp lesson who actually knows how to teach! youtube is riffe with know-nothings passing along a bunch of their own bad habits and bad technique.

I don't understand one piece of information I read on all the websites for harp. My instrument is the piano. A flat is G sharp. B flat is A sharp. C flat is B. D flat is C sharp. E flat is D sharp. F flat is E. G flat is F and A flat is again G sharp. The websites all say it is impossible to flat the harp. Maybe so, but if I play a song in B flat is sharp the A and the D. If A and D appear in the song, temporarily neutral them. Playing something in F flat minor could be fun, but beginning musicians rarely play songs in that signature. So, what is the issue?

So, it’s actually NOT impossible to play in a minor key on the harp. What IS impossible is to have the entire range of keys in one tuning, there are, however, some keys which you can tune your harp to which allow a good deal of versatility. The levers only sharp each note, so when they say you cannot flat a harp, they mean individual notes. However a good work around is to tune your hope so that when your lever is up on a specific note, it is actually playing a natural, so that when you release it you are of course playing a flat. If you’re proficient with your musing theory it isn’t TOO hard to figure out, but it takes a good deal of forethought and planning since tuning each string is a pretty lengthy process so you don’t want to have to sit down and tune them all before each piece!
I’m guessing you may have figured this out already since you left this comment a long time ago, but just in case you haven’t, look up “learn the harp” here on UA-cam, I believe she covered some of the most versatile tunings in one of her videos.

Chris passed away several years ago; but he was an accomplished harp maker as well as a harper; so I assumed he made this one himself.
